All these people talking about their athleticism and strength truly show who know nothing about hockey haha. These are 17, 18 year old kids who spend the majority of their time training their skills on the ice. Weight and off ice training is not a huge factor for a lot of them until after the draft when they need to put on weight in order to have a chance competing at the bigger stage. You just can't compare these guys to other sports. In football half the battle is just about being as big and strong as possible, plus during their combine the players are much older, been through 4 or 5 years of college... By their early 20s after developing some more they will be beasts of athletes no doubt about it. Example- look at Crosby his draft year compared to now.

This is why Hockey has the finest athletes. A Hockey player is a work of art, a process that takes 15-20 years to develop and forge into the athletes they become. The amount of levels and goals a player needs to achieve along this path to fully develop is unparalleled in all of sports. No other sports demand and expect so much for an athlete to even be considered just average. Putting on muscle mass and building explosiveness is literally the LAST aspect in creating a Hockey player, if it's even a desirable trait at all given how taxing it can be on a player's stamina and endurance to be that explosive. Some players even max their skill levels so high that being incredibly fit becomes almost unnecessary (looking at you Kessel).

All this stuff is so over-rated. Tyler Seguin wasn't big when he entered the NHL, neither was Gretzky! Raymond Bourque's legs were like tree trunks! He said he rode the bike a lot. . . Hockey players come in all shapes and sizes, and talent levels. You might want to be big if you fight a lot, but even that's not totally necessary. . .

I didn't expect any god-like results and I know it's not so important in hockey, but man when I was that age I could've beaten him at all of those tests and all I did was going to the gym 3 times a week. I even did better at the standing long jump in military tests, having not done any sports or exercise in half a year.. They should be stronger even off the ice training alone.

Just FYI....the purpose of the combine is, provide teams an idea on general athleticism of potential high-round draft picks. It's simply another metric they use to help determine if they want to select this person or not. Behind the scenes, there are countless interviews, personality tests, psychological tests, etc.... There is so much at stake when making their first round selection, they use all forms of data to really determine if this person is worthy of their selection. Kinda like what was said at the end of the movie Money Ball, you can analyze all the data you want, but at the end of the day, all that really matters what happens out on the ice, field, court, etc. and the players just need to play the game.
@defuzinSnipe9 жыл бұрын
Lol. If you guys think the Combine is useless. Then you don't know/play hockey. All these are hockey specific tests. It also shows what a persons potential is or whether he needs a few years to develop in the minors. You can't just go to the NHL without working on explosiveness, power, agility, and speed in the gym.
@SLproductions10009 жыл бұрын
Scott O I think it's stupid. Let's say someone had 100 points and then he messes this up. does it mean he sucks? No but teams will stay away. I understand the point but it's stupid. Like they also measure how much body fat they have. Like it's not that important if he can play. I know they want to know if he's healthy and won't have problems when he gets older but let's look at Kessel. He doesn't work out but still puts up what 50 points.
@defuzinSnipe9 жыл бұрын
OneTimer idk if I would want a player like kessel. Hes all offense and no defense. Very one dimensional. He's gonna decline hard in a few years for sure. The reason these are beyond important is because they tell scouts and coaches how hard they can push a player to reach his full potential. In eichel's case, they don't need to develop him much, just make sure he's doing the right things and getting his body right. In Connors case, hes clearly under matched in strength. So how far can he go. Do you play him against bigger players? Things like that. That's why the combine is so important. Hockey IQ can be developed, but only with the correct training. I think eichel is on track and Connor is a step behind in fitness
@SLproductions10009 жыл бұрын
Scott O I noticed that McDavid didn't do that many pull ups for someone who is a pro athlete. I agree that this is like important to also know if a player will be able to play long. Kessel, like you said will decline cause he doesn't work out. Jagr is 43 still plays better then half the players. A couple of years ago he had 100points. It's crazy.McDavid needs to work out more but he grew like 3 inches this season and he might grow more. He's still a bit young. I feel like 1 good offseason training with NHL players will help him. He does have a better attitude then Eichel. Also he played better then him at the IIHF world championship
@defuzinSnipe9 жыл бұрын
OneTimer mcdavid didnt play at the world championship. Eichel did and he played through the roof well. Really showed that Eichel isn't a goal scorer. Eichel played just as good as mcdavid at the WJC. The stats just didn't say anything.

Even though they are only 5 pounds difference I feel like Eichel is more aware of his body type. A power-forward is generally a better athlete because of his force but McDavids skating is unmatched. Plus his endurance is crazier! McDavid was on the ice for 8 straight minutes against Sault Ste. Marie in their last game. Sure there was 2 TV time outs and a regular time out but still. For an 18 year old his endurance is insane. Either way both will be forces to be reckoned with.

And Eichel played overwhelmingly better defense in that round ontop of that. I still think Mcdavids clearly better but to act like Eichel is some scrub is laughable . I’d also take Eichels defensive ability over Mcdavids any day . Playing for Cassidy turned Eichel into one of the best 2 way forwards in the league.

You gotta respect these players parents man they invested so much into getting them there on ice training like it’s so expensive, and for all the people saying basketball or football players are better athletes you have to realize that they are all completely different games and require different training and with hockey it’s mostly on ice training that excels players and with basketball and football you don’t have to pay to go on a court or a field cause they are plenty outdoors and outdoor hockey rinks only do so much for a players development compared to being on the ice

I don't know if the two are related in any way, but interesting that Pilon went from being a projected late 1st/early second round pick to the 5th round, to quitting hockey. I came across this article on his combine results: "granted, the Brandon defenceman didn’t have a lot of prep time after the Wheat Kings’ elimination in the WHL final, but still, teams would like to see a little more athleticism that Pilon put on display. Ranked No. 24 among North American skaters by Central Scouting, Pilon was dead last in body fat measurement and dead last in the cumulative measure in the agility tests. In fact, if you looked across the board you were almost guaranteed to find him in the bottom 10 percent, even in power rather than endurance tests."
@liammonaghan4785 Жыл бұрын
this would be interesting to ask him about but i am pretty sure he quit because he lost his passion for the game and that is why his draft position fell because he told teams he was thinking about it.
@PeterPan-lg3uq9 жыл бұрын
All these tests and not one of them measures talent, so stop using these tests results as a basis to argue that Eichel is a better prospect. Eichel had a year to prove himself on the ice and McDavid only pulled further ahead. Plus if its strength you're arguing for, McDavid obviously has more potential to develop in that area as well and when he does no one will be talking about Jack anymore.
@defuzinSnipe9 жыл бұрын
You do realize jack is only getting stronger right? Hes not even close to fully developed and it really does show that jack is not fully developed. These tests OBVIOUSLY aren't supposed to measure talent. It measures how in shape a person is. How well they can keep up with pros. how much a player can take at a certain level of play. And by this, its clear that jack will have no problem keeping up with the pros. He beat Connor by a mile on almost all the tests. He already proved at the world championship that he can play with high end pros while playing on an average age team of 24. If you think these are pointless, well you don't know what fitness can do for someone especially in the NHL.
@PeterPan-lg3uq9 жыл бұрын
Scott O Jack has had 18 years to prove he is a better player than Conner and he has fallen short - by consensus. Gretzky, the greatest player in history, was a weakling. Jack can pump all the weights he wants. It will not give him any more talent.

but why cant they do it on ice? shuttles/agility/speed would be far better on ice...can still do the rest of the shit in a gym. NFL combine is on a football field....NBA combine is on a basketball court...MLS combine is on a soccer field....NHL combine is....on a concrete floor.

The talent pool for hockey is super small. It's a rich kid sport, and it takes a ton of skating/stick handling work just to get a sniff at the nhl. When you see a player with actual athleticism it's quite crazy, but it is rare.

Only 9 times with the 150 lbs? Damn, he's skilled but he's gonna need a serious training camp, if he wants to make a career in the NHL, if not he's gonna end up on the injury list more often than Crosby.
@diadlo7778 жыл бұрын
+gentlemen59 So, what were you saying already? Watch and see? Only thing is that I wasn't off with my thinking, on the opposite, I was exactly right.
@diadlo7778 жыл бұрын
***** They are talking about months and actually finding comments on Google+ is actually pretty easy. The thing is that this is not going to be the only time. He need muscular training, he is skilled there is no doubts about this but he is also too weak for the NHL. Speed is good but when you get hit by a guy like Byfuglien, if you don't have the shoulders resistant enough you'll just be crushed. I'm not hoping that is career ends up with lots of injuries, it's the opposite, I hope for him that next summer he'll make an intense muscular training. Remember, he played just a little more than 12 games and he's already out for a couple of months. They are saying until mid January.
@diadlo7778 жыл бұрын
***** Dude, just watch Brandon Gallagher with the Montreal Canadiens, the guy is a muscular monster even though he's 5''7 he's always going to fight in front of the nets and never had any injury, believe what you want but having a good musculation helps you prevents injuries, just imagine, he played just a little more than 10 games and he's out for months, on his first year. It might be because of unfortunate series of events like you call it but look at him when he'll get pounded on the board, he'll end up with concusions. He got the skills, he got the speed but if he don't want to ends up on the injury list even more than Crosby he'll need to gain a lot of muscles, say whatever you want, 9 times with 150 pounds is pretty damn weak.

I'm going to be completely honest, and this is my personal view. I played in the OHL/Jr.A and 1 pro season over in Europe. Although, I believe I should have made the NHL, shit happens, but what I'm getting at is all these testing's literally mean fuck all. I was one if not the fastest in every league I played in and I barely worked out or stretched to any degree. This may not be the same for everyone, but I ran track and played soccer and lacrosse growing up as well as I'm sure most people are in other sports like baseball along with hockey up until the point where they can't do both. None of these tests mean anything. Now, I'm not saying that going to the gym and getting stronger or in better shape wont help. I'm just saying that I think some people need to work harder than others. I wasn't even a big guy and I was probably one of the toughest on my feet in regards to like strength and edge work and I think if you're a young kid I think you should go to hockey schools, play other sports, be active and enjoy your life. Being in the gym is overrated when it comes to playing hockey. These guys being tested for wingspan all the jumping tests and things like pull ups or bench press, they actually all mean fuck all when you're getting on the ice. Sure, you want to impress and test well, but I personally believe that none of it matters.

People arguing if Hockey players are athletic or not? lol….when I was a senior in HS I was playing hockey on a Junior team, I had a lot of friends who played football & other sports. I remember being able to dominate them on the football field & the school baseball coach trying to recruit me also. My friends who played football all told me I should play because I was better than anyone on their team. The reason I stuck with hockey was because of my size, I was a goalie, I'm only 5'7"-5'8" and at the time i was 165lbs. At that time (i graduated in 2004), goalies under 6 feet tall still existed, although they were becoming less and less. Football I would only be able to play running back & would be considered a very small back at that. And baseball, I had no power hitting the ball compared to Star players, I was just extremely good defensively. I could still hit, but I wouldn't send any over the wall. But by far, amongst my friends, I was considered the best overall athlete, because any sport I tried I excelled at. My friend ran track & I was a faster runner than him, although he would beat me on distance. But I was an excellent Hockey & Football player, I was a very good Baseball & Basketball player. And I could beat 90% of people in a 100 meter dash. I had 5% body fat, which was considered the level of a professional athlete. So yes, hockey players are very athletic.

Hey, anyone know what does the 'force plate' measure?
@TheUnusedCrayon6 жыл бұрын
I would imagine the ability to explode. Chances are the more pressure you're putting on the plate will translate to explosiveness with skating and how good you can push off and accelerate.

It is another variation for measuring a vertical jump. Instead of measure how high an athlete can touch on a Vertec pole (which can be manipulated easily) this records how long they stay in the air and can measure their vertical jump based on that.
