I never called it "la raya", I always called it "guion", didn't know they were different. Well, I guess I've never had to use it either, so it makes sense why I never knew the difference.

I'm from Argentina and I don't know anything about Italian or Portuguese, but if I hear someone speaking in Portuguese I can short of understand what they're saying, BUT if I hear someone speak Italian I understand 90% of what they're saying, Italian it's more familiar are close (at least for me) than Portuguese.

But if you want to say what someone else said then you use quotes (this ones: ".") For example: - Carl, mom said: "you and your brother better not do any kind of trouble, you guys better leave everything clean for when I come back, ok?!" - ughh what does she think we are? Five year old kids? For god's sake. In conclusion you better not say anything if you don't know what you're talking about.

I think she got confused, because we use quotes when quoting someone or something, and the "line" ("-") is for dialogue in texts.
