I know the fights with Aldo and Alvarez were iconic, but this is the best one for me. This was the moment that Conor actually proved he wasn't just talk. Back then a lot of people and fellow fighters criticized him for fighting "cans" like Diego Brandao and Dennis Siver, and that as soon as he fought anyone near the top of the FW div like Edgar or Mendes (Aldo was considered unbeatable) he would get exposed, then he knocked out Chad Mendes on short notice in the second round after being thoroughly tested by Chad's wrestling and cemented himself as a legit fighter. It's crazy that this was almost 8 years ago.

Herb Dean also stopped many fights way too early giving Mcgregor the win when the fighter was still good to go, this has happened several times throughout, yet he's over extended when it comes to Mcgregor giving him ample chance to regain and get back on his feet before eventually having no choice but to stop it. Some fighters are stopped the moment they touch the canvas and defend against 1 punch, yet McGregor has been given a much longer chance to try and turn it around. Obvious favoritism by the UFC when it cames to Gregor but Khabib put him in his place for good which was pure quality. Endless cheats to no evail, was dragged around the cage and crushed lol.

Anyone else come back to this fight again to see the hungry Conor? The Alvarez win was impressive, sure. But this fight meant so much more to Conor. It would be his first "title" and basically his 100% ticket to a title fight. He had an injury along with a fighter change 2 weeks into his scheduled fight and against someone who is a polar opposite to Aldo. He won and in splendid fashion. Had a great chin to take some of those shots on the ground along with heart to keep attacking off his back. Those elbows from Conor did heavy damage and opened the body once more. This was a great time to watch Conor.

@theviewer52623 жыл бұрын
It was an early stoppage in some ways because there was so little time left in the round and Conor wasn’t landing when Mendes covered up - it’s a tough one because Mendes wasn’t fighting back and generally referees don’t like to see fighters in the position he was in. I think if it was allowed to continue to the end of the round Mendes would have still been conscious, but I do think McGregor would’ve put the pressure on and finished the fight early in the third round. Mendes had used the energy he had and wasn’t prepared to go five rounds due to the late notice.

Chad wasnt trying to stop the punches, just covering up Anyway, if the ref didnt stop it, Connor would have won early in round 3 cos Chad was gassed. Not stopping the fight would have led to uneccessary damage to Chad and also would have been against protocol

Chad should've been doing more but seeing how there was literally about 3 seconds left in the round they should've left it. He was covered up pretty well at least and Chad was peppering him the whole fight so I wonder what would've happened it round 3 🤔
@aztecblanchard3444 жыл бұрын
Chad was wiped out after the first round, that second round he was basically dead on his feet when they stood back up. As soon as he failed to lock in the guillotine and Connor got up the fight was over, even if that went into a 3rd round Chad was running on fumes.
@Grantofglyn4 жыл бұрын
@@aztecblanchard344 Oh yeah because Conor is so well known for his gas tank. Chad would've recovered better than him in the break for the third round and if he had taken him down one more time and kept him there that would've totally drained what Conor had left

Great fight. Both fighters had the moments and either could have won. Chad should have maintained his dominant position, he was doing well in the guard, controlling the fight and applying damage. He rolled the dice and went for a submission (probably due to knowing his cardio was limited) and then things went downhill. Great striking from McGregor... especially those body shots, each one zapped the energy right out of Mendes.Great fight.

@@asianking187 Saying "he only won because Chad gassed out makes NO sense", Gas tank is a huge amount of the game. There is an old fight game saying "Fatigue makes cowards out of heroes". Considering this was Conor's breakthrough fight, I really think luck was on his side in some aspects. In 10 other alternate realities, Chad won this fight 5 of those times, because it really was a good scrap and he was doing well on his feet as well as dominating during wrestling. Of course Conor earned the win and did well with body shots but, this fight was volatile and could've gone either way in a heartbeat. And if it had, would he have even ended up making his legacy? Crazy how it all works out.
@DizGuys8 ай бұрын
I was considering the same thing and I think there was just no way Conor was going to lose this fight. His mind would not allow it. He knew on THIS night he was going to win and he would make it a reality, no matter what.
