I know the fights with Aldo and Alvarez were iconic, but this is the best one for me. This was the moment that Conor actually proved he wasn't just talk. Back then a lot of people and fellow fighters criticized him for fighting "cans" like Diego Brandao and Dennis Siver, and that as soon as he fought anyone near the top of the FW div like Edgar or Mendes (Aldo was considered unbeatable) he would get exposed, then he knocked out Chad Mendes on short notice in the second round after being thoroughly tested by Chad's wrestling and cemented himself as a legit fighter. It's crazy that this was almost 8 years ago.

@@trueking1857 He always lets a lot slide when it comes to Mcgregor. He gets alway with a lot of cheating when he knows he's starting to lose and gets desperate. Herb Dean also stopped many fights way too early giving Mcgregor the win when the fighter was still good to go, this has happened several times throughout, yet he's over extended when it comes to Mcgregor giving him ample chance to regain and get back on his feet before eventually having no choice but to stop it. Some fighters are stopped the moment they touch the canvas and defend against 1 punch, yet McGregor has been given a much longer chance to try and turn it around. Obvious favoritism by the UFC when it cames to Gregor but Khabib put him in his place for good which was pure quality. Endless cheats to no evail, was dragged around the cage and crushed lol.

Anyone else come back to this fight again to see the hungry Conor? The Alvarez win was impressive, sure. But this fight meant so much more to Conor. It would be his first "title" and basically his 100% ticket to a title fight. He had an injury along with a fighter change 2 weeks into his scheduled fight and against someone who is a polar opposite to Aldo. He won and in splendid fashion. Had a great chin to take some of those shots on the ground along with heart to keep attacking off his back. Those elbows from Conor did heavy damage and opened the body once more. This was a great time to watch Conor.

The ref is obliged to end the fight when one fighter stops resisting. Chad was not doing anything to prevent the hits, just covering up Also don't complain about the stoppage, cos Chad was gassed. I think u guys need to know the back story, Mendes was a late replacement hence why his gas tank was not good so he was trying to finish it early had he got a full camp at that time I have no doubt he would of won even if he might of been juiced up. McGregor was fast tracked and kept away from decent wrestlers, the UFC saw the star dust in McGregor and promoted him and protected him as much as possible.

@theviewer5262
@theviewer5262 3 жыл бұрын
It was an early stoppage in some ways because there was so little time left in the round and Conor wasn’t landing when Mendes covered up - it’s a tough one because Mendes wasn’t fighting back and generally referees don’t like to see fighters in the position he was in. I think if it was allowed to continue to the end of the round Mendes would have still been conscious, but I do think McGregor would’ve put the pressure on and finished the fight early in the third round. Mendes had used the energy he had and wasn’t prepared to go five rounds due to the late notice.

Great fight. Both fighters had the moments and either could have won. Chad should have maintained his dominant position, he was doing well in the guard, controlling the fight and applying damage. He rolled the dice and went for a submission (probably due to knowing his cardio was limited) and then things went downhill. Great striking from McGregor... especially those body shots, each one zapped the energy right out of Mendes.Great fight.

Considering this was Conor's breakthrough fight, I really think luck was on his side in some aspects. In 10 other alternate realities, Chad won this fight 5 of those times, because it really was a good scrap and he was doing well on his feet as well as dominating during wrestling. Of course Conor earned the win and did well with body shots but, this fight was volatile and could've gone either way in a heartbeat. And if it had, would he have even ended up making his legacy? Crazy how it all works out.
