Remember when world’s strongest man Hafþór Björnsson did that playful sparring match with UFC champion Connor McGregor? What would have happened if that was a real fight? How much if any coaching would Hafthor Bjornsson need to beat Connor? How many minor miracles would Connor need to beat a Behemoth of Thor’s magnitude?
Shanghai based MMA Coach and Kunlun Fight Combat League ringside commentator Ramsey Dewey answers questions from the viewers.

If a man in that weight difference threatens you, you get a gun, get a knife or a sword, don't fool yourself, when humans realized they need to fight tigers and mammoths they did not invent jiujitsu, they invented weapons. that's why we have weight categories in fighting sports, is too much of a advantage, don't let movies fool you, you may get really hurt trying to compete with people that are way above your weight category, martial arts work, but are not magical powers.

Ramsey, so fun fact, Thor actually tore his plantar fascia on the first day of the 2019 worlds strongest man competition and still competed in the rest of the competition and placed third. this man literally tore his heel and was still able to compete lifts weighing over 700 pounds including getting first place in the deadlift hold where you deadlift 710 pounds and hold it for as long as possible. now I'm not sure how that would effect his fighting but a normal person has trouble walking when they injure theirs.

Very good point. There tends to be a lot of ignorance in debates like this. People tend to call anyone who lifts weights a 'bodybuilder', when in reality, strongmen and bodybuilders are worlds apart. Today's pro strongmen are doing things that weren't even a topic for serious discussion just 10-15 years ago. Being able to lift over 500 lbs overhead is a level of strength that's literally unimaginable to the average person.

Actual combat would have more options to equalize things. With rules in a ring it can be tricky and at some point it just get's ratio'd. And with most "street" fights rarely involving only 2 people I wouldn't rely on time to wear out a big guy or commit to a ground fight.

My husband has limited martial arts experience, but he’s been into power lifting for quite a while and is about 120 kg and was able to beat a jujitsu expert self defense instructor in an informal match, basically just with his strength and toughness. I’m not sure how well this anecdote applies to fights in general, but his experience always makes me skeptical of claims that strength doesn’t matter.
@51dodoc
@51dodoc 4 жыл бұрын
Strength matter, it's just that sometimes a very skilled guy can overcome a much stronger opponent like Nogueira beating Bob Sapp but even with the massive size difference you have to consider that Nogueira was already really strong himself. Same thing apply in most cases where a small guy beat up a bigger man, the smaller guy is usually skilled and got some serious strength too.

As I understood, in Brazil the Gracies had a habit of challenging big bodybuilder / weightlifter guys to fights, and filming the match. This was in the 80/90s I believe. The Gracies never lost these challenge matches, even though they were quite small in stature, and the opponents were huge.
@arthurrosa9403
@arthurrosa9403 3 жыл бұрын
@@2kusiainen The gracies aren't small, lol. They just fight bigger men. One misconception is the proportion of weight and strength. The bigger you get, the less strength you get from being big. That's why the "small" guys that beat big guys are usually 200pounds. At that point you have enough strength to do things to the human body, and some tissues can't be hardened. A smaller man can beat a big guys in some circumstances, but hardly in a UFC cage, or following MMA rules.

Size matters so much. I am a big dude. BIG. 6'3', 130kg. Standing next to most people I look like a freaking giant. Ten years in the security industry, hundreds of physical confrontations with people, and at the time ZERO fighting skills and I can tell you from experience: Size Matters. Over and above the fact that fighting skills are not the skills you generally use as a security guard, but all I had to do was push someone and they stay pushed, or grab their arms and run them into a wall... or just hold them at arms length. However, put me in a ring, with rules, and I am toast. I can''t fight, even with 5 years of classical boxing training I am not a fighter, My boxing coach was waaaay smaller than me. In the ring (with rules) he would easily use me to wipe the floor, nothing I could do to stop him. If it was outside the ring... roles were very much reversed. Size Matters.

Size makes such a huge difference. I'm a big dude. Not nearly as big as Hafthor but I'm still 6'3 and 260 pounds. When I played tackle football with my friends, if I got the ball, it was a touchdown, because they couldn't tackle me. I'd just be dragging 4 or 5 dudes down the field. I'd be absolutely worn out by the end, but I could do it. After two games my friends decided that wasn't fair and out voted me to change the rules to touch football. All of them were 5'10 or shorter and 170 pounds or lighter. I had them by 90 to 125 pounds. It was no contest. I used to get in a lot of fights in school. Sometimes two or three guys who lost to me previously 1v1 would team up and come back the next month all at the same time. It would obviously be a more difficult fight, and I would take a lot of hits, but they couldn't knock me out, and my punches hurt them a lot more than their's hurt me. When I tell people these things they don't believe me. They think I'm bragging or trying to make myself seem like some kind of tough guy. I'm not. I'm just pointing out the advantage that size has. There is a reason that the weight classes in combat sports like boxing have classes with as little as a 3 pound difference. If 3 pounds is enough to give somebody an advantage, just imagine what a 100 pound advantage would be like.

@@KurNorock I've never considered it an advantage from my experience. I'm 174cm, 66kg, my pops is 188cm and 110kg. The one time he told me during sparing that I can freely try to hit him as hard as I can (as he was used to thinking that someone smaller can't do shit) I instantly KO'd him with a punch to his temple, to which he was too slow to even move his hands towards some more defensive position. Basically, lights out, he was done. That's just an anecdote, an experience that taught me that everyone has got weak points and more muscle mass on the rest of your body ain't going to help there. That said, I do carry a knife especially for a situation where a much larger fella will try to suplex me or some other shit, if someone's going for breaking my head open on the concrete at least they'll have to stick a knife out of their face right after, I ain't playin when it's on the streets.
@KurNorock
@KurNorock 3 жыл бұрын
@@WhiteDeVil3 Yes, it is just an anecdote. And I never said that a bigger guy will always win every single time, or that smaller guy don't have a "puncher's chance". But can you do that every time? Can you do that every time to every bigger guy than you? No, you can't. And actually, a bigger guy IS more resistant to damage from shots to the head. They have more mass, thicker/stronger necks, that prevent their heads from moving as much when struck. Less head movement means less brain movement, which means a lower chance of being knocked out. And yes, a smaller guy with years of training against a bigger guy with no experience will still obviously have an advantage. However, when looking at the totality of all human beings (and animals) in a fight, the larger fighter has a significant advantage most of the time. If you take any two guys with equal skill, equal health, age, physical conditioning, etc, and pit them against each other, the bigger one will win the majority of the time, and the bigger the one guy is than the other, the larger his advantage will be.

@Hugh Ropp John Smith is amazing, no doubt, but put him in a cage vs a 53 year old Alexandr Karelin and he will get smashed. Saenchai is one of the greatest fighters to ever step in a ring. It's amazing how he was able to fight larger fighters, but he was giving up 25 lbs at the most. He's a 130 pounder sometimes fighting at 147 or 154. Amazing, yes, but not a 250+ lbs of solid muscle differential. Khabib vs Cormier wasn't an actual fight. Pride held only 2 open-weight tournaments that I am aware of. Both were won by heavyweights. Mark Coleman in 2000, and Mirko CroCop in 2006. The IBJJF is a Brazilian Jiujitsu organization, not a MMA organization. BJJ is perhaps the martial art where size matters the least, but as you said, its dominated not by 115 pounders but by 155s and 175s. A 160 pounder beating a 230 pounder in in BJJ is not the same thing as a 160 pounder beating a 440 pound wall of muscle in a MMA fight. You are right that size isn't everything, but it DOES matter. A lot. After a certain point it becomes overwhelming. Skill can make up for a lot of that but we are talking about a really extreme case here. I'm not sure why you seem to think acknowledging this is some kind of personal attack on you, but it's not.

People do not understand how small Conor McGregor is. He is 175cm (5'9"), and in his career he was first a featherweight at 66kg (145lb), at max he reached 77kg (170lb), after retirement. His top shape, when he won titles, was around 70kg (150lb). He is an extremely technical guy, but it is not the best option if you want to fight the Mountain. Now, if the question was about an heavyweight champion, someone like Werdum going for 193cm and 110kg, I think Ramsey Dewey would have had more difficulty answering the question.

Juji actually LET Shane to do WHATEVER he wanted, to grab him HOWEVER he wanted, and STILL Shane wasn't able to pin him dow, the man looked like a clown, he had no idea of what to do. It is always great to have learned something! You basically explained something to me that i sometimes thought of since i was 14. (long time ago) My only personal experience with martial arts: A friend of mine was doing Judo (competitively for a few years and won some tournaments in his age class) but was around 30% smaller and lighter than me. And when fooling around in the school gym hall with a high jump matt, he showed me one of the throwing techniques. (No for me to learn to do it, i just wanted to know how it mechanically worked) And after explaining to me what he was going to do, we agreed on the high jump matt (cause without any martial arts knowledge on my side, this seemed the safest way for me to get thrown into). And knowing what he would do, i tried to resist. Nothing more, but just resist and "pull" and move my body in the opposite direction at the right time. He tried 3 or 4 times and couldn't manage to bring the technique to work. We both laughed a lot during the tries and it must have looked hilariously weird, but we didn't really understand why i was able to resist. Until now i never heard of the 30% rule, but this makes sense to me now. Thanks! (This experience also made me suspicious of traditional martial arts, as i interprated it as: they might only work if the opponent does what your sparing partners always do, and adheres to the same restricted range of movements.)

Judo throws are not like a double-leg takedown. Judo throws require "kuzuchi", meaning the unbalancing of the opponent. Judokas are constantly manipulating their opponent's balance, pushing and pulling so that the opponent will react, and then trap them. It works best in the flowing, chaotic movement of a fight. To make an analogy with boxing, if wrestlers were the guys with a vicious overhand right, judokas would be the counterpunchers, the ones that have the perfect timing to let you knock yourself out on their fist precisely at the moment you're attacking. Basically, if you know which throw is coming, it's easy to resist. BUT if your buddy had been allowed to try two in a row, he would have pulled you one way, you'd have resisted and then he would have used that to throw you harder in the other direction, 30% or not.

As Stalin once said “quantity has a quality of its own”. I’d take strongmen training over powerlifting for MMA any day. Strongmen incorporate the powerlifting lifts but also have pretty good anaerobic cardio conditioning, too. Most of the events they do are heavy weight (not too heavy for them, but beyond what most people can do) reps or sprints for time. For instance, how many reps of a 700lb squat can you do in 60 seconds. Or frame/yoke carries with 1000lb+ for 30 or 60 meters. Powerlifters just don’t have the same leve of GPP (general physical preparedness) as strongmen do or need. You mentioned sumo, Akebono (a former sumo grand champion in Japan, so one of the best there is) was horrible in both K-1 and MMA. In large part due to his lack of fitness and strength. He was trying to rely on brute size alone. It didn’t work out well for him. In the case of Hafthor, he would be much, much stronger, and much fitter as well. I do think Hafthor would need to have some training, understanding ring movement to cut off his opponent, how not to put himself in compromising positions - losing balance, etc. It would be interesting to see what Hafthor could do with someone like Rickson Gracie. Btw, they “agreed” to it, and hopefully it actually happens - Hafthor and Eddie Hall (World Strongest Man 2017 and world deadlift record holder at 500kg) are suppose to have a boxing match. Thor wanted a year to train first as Eddie Hall actually has boxing experience. Note too - Hall in his teen years was actually one of the top junior swimmers in England.

I'm so glad he made this video. Yes, martial artists can fight bigger opponents. But so many keyboard martial artists were commenting on the Thor vs. Connor video the dumbest things I have ever read. He isn't just a big guy. He isn't just 450 lbs. He is the worlds STRONGEST man. He is 4 times, maybe 5 times stronger than other guys his size (except for other strongmen). That inhuman amount of strength is just too much. That being said I doubt he could fight a trained HEAVYWEIGHT mma figher, who although they are heavyweight, still weigh maybe 200 pounds less than him. But the strength and size difference is so much less.

The thing about Bjornssonn is that he doesn't need to good leverage to submit someone of Conor's size. He just needs to get hold of him anywhere, once. It would be kinda like the way Hulk grabbed and bashed Loki into the ground in the "Avengers."

To the people that say size and strength don’t matter and skill is more important, Think about trying to grapple with a chimpanzee, they’re biologically the closest to humans so technically you could pull off the same submissions on them as u do a human, but in reality chimps are so much stronger than us they would literally tear u apart

Hugh Ropp sorry what? Weapons were never apart of the equation. Yeah Connor could beat Thor if he had a gun same with everyone in the world I’m talking skill vs strength.if someone or something is 5 times stronger than u then there’s really nothing you can do in a fight WITHOUT the use of a weapon or trying to outsmart them but that wasn’t even my point to begin with.

@Hugh Ropp Serial killers? Assassins?! You are absolutely talking out of your butt. Also I don't think you know how tools work, a pick axe fits your sloppy analogy way better while also refuting it. Why on earth would you waste time and resources _eroding_ a boulder? You pulverize it and haul away the pieces, walls get blown up. Define "assassin" for me, I'm curious. Serial killers very meticulously choose people who are vulnerable, the exact opposite of strong. This is the daffiest thing I've read all week, thanks I needed the laugh.

You really need technique to punch hard. Yes, big guy has heavy hands, but it doesn´t mean they automatically has lots of KO power. Look at boxing. Huge guys like Valuev, who was actually a world class boxer and definitely knew how to punch. He still never was a real KO artist,. Neither is Tyson Fury, one of the biggest and probably the best boxer atm. Then on the other hand Wilder and late 80´s Mike Tyson are and were huge punchers and weighted less than 100kg. Mike Tyson was about 180cm and maybe 96kg or something like that and he´s one of the biggest punchers in history, definitely hitting much, much harder than unskilled strongman.
