As for your friend that you mentioned, if things like ideology of politics or really anything like that is a deal breaker to them I'd argue they aren't a good friend to keep. I know it sounds harsh but if they cant accept you because you think different then they do, they sound like a very toxic person. They might be cool in other areas and just passionate about their views but passion and toxicity has a fine line.
