The Maul's Basic Attacks leave you stationary for a long time. Using the dash attack and and block animation cancel is a better alternative.
The constant repositioning will also make it harder for you to die vs units and heroes.

It also has a hit before the full animation is finished, so you can deal Damage faster by dodging the instant you see damage apply. More the reason to do so.
