Cannot understand the fixation of no gas. Gas is instant, cheap, efficient and reliable. Less than $30 changeover for a bottle versus an insane amount of $$$ for battery, induction, solar, monitors, gauges etc. It’s camping with a solid roof, keep it simple. The more tech, the dearer it gets and the higher the probability of things going wrong.
@jamesdee9320
@jamesdee9320 3 ай бұрын
Its not really more tech. The induction cooker runs off an inverter that is in most vans these days anyway. if anything its simplifying the system as there is no gas certification needed, no heavy cylinders on the A frame of the trailer, and induction isnt effected by wind like gas cookers are. Having 2 seperate induction cookers instead of 1 dual induction unit gives redundancy if one fails. Converting an old van to gasless would be pricey, but buying new wont hurt as much as most vans already come out with medium to large lithium systems.

Its been 200 years of gas - time to move on ! And who wants carbon monoxide in the van everytime you cook or heat water. Gas is also completely useless in the slightest breeze.

I definitely wouldn’t have gas for cooking inside of a van ever again. I would have it for the hot water service, I like it as a backup to the electric hot water. Plus I like cooking on my gas Webber.

Interesting concept van. Live TV holds zero interest for me personally, but I do understand others love it for their sport fix, and that is ok. But consider making it an option rather than standard as most manufacturers do, because I would happily ditch the TV antenna for more solar. I've been using starlink for the past year since I've been working on the road and have found that it's easy enough to stream anything I want (including live tv, not that I ever bother with it). Even an option for popping up a starlink antenna and a feedthrough for the cable an a place in a cupboard for the router would be a great ideas. I've ended up with a jockey wheel mount on our rear bar, a length of aluminium tube with an adapter on it for the antenna that I throw up everytime we stop for the night and modified an external hatch with a cat6a feedthrough to our router under the sink. Makes for a quick mobile office deployment in under 10 mins.

Great electric van, however it is not about the batteries, it’s all about the solar. 600 amps and get rid of the hatches on the roof and fit as much solar as possible. 600 amps of flat batteries are as handy as 900 amps of flat batteries. You may be able to fit a small wing on the back to help with more solar. Save money on one 300 amp battery and put it into solar.
@SmartTouringSystems
@SmartTouringSystems 3 ай бұрын
Yes you are right, 600 might just be the magic number with a bit more solar and also some portable solar.
@davedave5457

hmmm yes but its best to have a very big dam full as well, as most people seek out shade when camping and having a solid BCDC 50amps etc is so much better than having solar panels everywhere, i run 300amp in my camper and 200amp in my car so i never have to be the person worrying about putting out solar panels and chasing sun, i just pull into camp and no i can run my oven my fridges my accessories for 3-5 days without needing any charge, and when i do im driving to the next spot pumping in 50amps into each system every hour, 900amps in this rig is a good standard and certainly means you can pull into a campsite off grid for a few days with no worrying about solar, 'most" people buying this van wouldn't be stationary off grid for much longer than that, whilst it would be good to have 900 watts solar, id prefer a bigger reserve capacity in my energy storage with solid BCDC charging than worrying about chasing sun, especially when there isnt any.

I love the power setup they’re starting to use on hybrids. I’ve built an 18’ hybrid using an EcoFlow system. 5kw battery, 3600amp inverter and 2000w of solar on the roof. 1200w is permanent with another 800w available using Linear actuators. VERY expensive but will give anything on the Australian market a run for its money.

Currently have the 490 and would be very interested in upgrading to a van like this. Would be good if they extended the awning to cover the front of the trailer for example like the Bushwakka “The Meg”. More coverage. On the last trip in the 490 it was very frustrating having the rain coming in onto the fridge area and having to put the back wall up and still have rain coming through the gap at the top. We had to peg a towel up. Excellent amount of storage. Great to see the way the windows open on the 600 so they can be left open if it’s raining, unlike the sliding window on the 490. We were considering the 14 but the teenagers are less likely to travel in the future according to them, so a couples van would be a great addition.

I don’t have a problem with induction cooking per se however, in the event that we want to use a BBQ with a hood (eg. Ziggy or Webber Q), we have nowhere to hook in. My understanding of the latest QLD gas regs are that, if the caravan/camper isn’t supplied with a gas-using appliance (such as a cooktop or water heater) then the gas can never be plumbed in. That means lugging a bottle around and fitting it up when it’s to be used. That’s not a problem if the camper has a gas bottle holder but this prototype, as with all hybrids of the same ilk, doesn’t have one. I like the induction cooker (though not a fan of where it’s located - watching the steam rise raises questions about the likelihood of smells etc permeating through that overhead pantry over time) but I’d want a gas bottle storage box as an option at the very least.

I’m comfortable with gasless. Induction is good. However if a cooker shits it self it would be good if the benchtop can support changes in size, model, brand etc. Regarding solar, a good option is to be able to plug in a blanket via anderson plug. More often you will park in the shade and set up your starlink and solar away from the van. Van weight is an important factor. Nice to stay under 2t for a single axle

I would also love to see a composting option. The new Joocla one looks impressive. Cost effective and portable. I would also love to see at least a gas bayonet under the induction kitchen as a redundancy for low solar input days and for those who love gas cooking so a small gas cooker can be used or as others have said 1 gas/1induction Well done.

Considering how expensive UEV-14 is, this new hybrid will pass the $100k mark. I prefer gas cooking over induction but a good combo would be 600ah and 800w solar panels gas cooking with provision of induction for emergencies. Diesel heater and water is a BIG win.

Another observation - the awning. It’s less than ideal to have any rain run back towards the camper like that. Mount the awning to the pop-top and you also get away from having to push up those posts to make the peak. The kitchen lights need to be larger than the provided too. I also hope that the toilet can be optioned out for a composting toilet (like an OGO) because those chemical toilets are not ideal.

Rule of thumb is solar watts should be double the lithium battery setup e.g. could be 600 solar with 300 lithium. If the hot water comes from tge diesel heater then induction cooking plus lights should not be too big a drain. Induction only runs for a relatively short time. If you want to run air-conditioning off-grid then more solar and battery is needed. We use a portable induction cooker plus gas. On that awning, water should not run back towards the van.

Gee, they got that wrong. The rule of thumb is twice as much solar to batteries. You'll just kill those batteries prematurely if you cannot cycle them properly by replenishing through solar when off grid. Or you'll need to carry a generator or plug in to AC defeating the whole concept. Thousand of dollars to replace 900 watts of (good quality) batteries when they fail. If you are going to go 100% electric it begins with solar. Guessing these are a Chinese van modified here?

Thanks for your feedback, agreed more solar and potentially less battery would be better however in a smaller van roof space can be a problem.

900Ah of batteries and 500W of solar? Would be better off with 900W of solar and 500Ah of batteries. Why not just use gas? Want to boil some water? Just use a JetBoil. $200 or something. Fast as. I don't get this obsession with gasless...
