We are at the top of the grade on the Conrail Reading line. It is a constant grade from Allentown yard, to were we stand here at Emmaus, PA. We catch both east and west traffic of both Conrail, and the Delaware & Hudson using trackage rights over the line. You'll see classic old power of EMD, GE, and even an Alco shows up.
Thanks for watching, and hope you enjoyed it.

Jack, this footage is really special to me. I was just a teen during these years. Back then I had little interest in trains.. I would see D&H running where I lived in upstate NY (Albany, Schenectady, Troy area)..Now many years later I've developed a love for trains and seek out footage such as you provide. I model D&H primarily with a sprinkle of nearly all New England roads just because. Until recently I just collected and ran what I liked without any thought about actual routes or operations. Now here I find myself wanting to focus on that era gone by. So, this footage really hits a chord with me. Being able to see actual footage of these older engines..and hear the horns of that day. Most everyone today is doing modern railroads..and fallen flags are harder to come by. Maybe that's why it appeals to me..yearning for that day gone by. Thank you for sharing.. Tom

Glad you enjoyed it Thomas. I see by the amount of views I get for things I post. 70's - 80's are a big hit, 90's -00's do good, but it seems that 2010 and newer doesn't have a big impact, unless its something rare. Seems that everyone takes video now a days, and its the same stuff over and over. All the good stuff, 1st and 2nd gen locomotives are gone for most part, So sad. Atleast there are a few of us that keep putting up this classic stuff. Thanks again, and thanks for watching..

Very cool! I love seeing trains in those days with all the mergers occurring, the old power you never see on Class I Railroads, and those perfect horns that don't even sound like anything you hear trackside today. Even though i wasn't alive in 70's 80's and 90's i still have an attachment to old diesels a little more than steam. Anyway, thanks for sharing and great footage!

Thanks Jack for publishing these great videos. The sounds are wonderful and having lived through the years of transition from the LV, RDG, EL, and D&H into Conrail and PC, these videos bring back many fond memories. Just hearing those SD45 horns again is great. Thanks.

You know how those old movie outfits where. I'm going through them a little bit at a time, and trying to get them up on KZfaq. This old film deteriates after time, and I notices, so does the VHS tapes, and I have 56, 2 hour tapes I have to edit as well. Thanks for watching...

Absolutely something than can no longer be repeated today! I miss the early days of CONRAIL! Hard to believe it was 41 year's ago!! My friend and I railfanned Emaus hill in 2005! Though it was no longer CONRAIL. At least we could enjoy NS action there!

I always liked Emaus Hill! Not sure if they use helpers on there anymore. Most big trains back in the 70's did. I guess with todays high HP units, they don't even brake a sweat! LOL. I haven't been there in years. Thanks for watching Tom...

I hear yah Richard. I didn't go as far as the Conrail era, but I do model Penn Central just before the Conrail takeover. I pool power with the EL, and some other roads to add interest. I especially like the DM&IR, and run an All-rail train like PC did in the winter months when the lakes froze over. Uusually have a PC leader with DM&IR SD38AC, DMIR taconite cars and DMIR caboose. Make for an interesting train.

Glad you enjoyed it. Years ago, it wasn't easy to get on with the railroad. You either had to know someone, or a family member got you in. I wanted to hire on with the EL back in the 70's, but settled to the trucking industry, which now I am retired from after 47 years. Thanks for watching... BTW, I will be near here in June for the big truck show at Macungie. I'll will be bring the 85 Superliner that I just purchased, and I'll be able to watch the railroad at the same time. A win-win for me...

Love the helper cutoff on the fly. Saw 2 Pennsy logos on locomotives in Conrail's third calendar year. In Ohio all units I remember had mating worms by 1976. Note how overbuilt the railroad is, with sidings on both sides of double track. Today that level of traffic would warrant single track. Just look at CSX going north out of the Atlanta metro area or NS going west, SSE or northeast.

Those were the interesting days- you could see just about anything come by. I miss that sound of the old jointed rails, and trains still look weird to me without the caboose. I noticed there was a man at the throttle of the ALCO cut in on the second train. The MU connection must not have been operational.

good one jack, think when I was younger back on 88 or 89 I saw a black CR unit on the east penn drill coming through Allentown and I'm almost sure it was black with a can opener logo.
@1jackdk
@1jackdk 7 жыл бұрын
Don't recall ever seeing a black unit with the can-openner DD. Anything is possible. I do remember shooting and AP1 coming down the Lehigh Valley with N&W for power. When it ducked under the RDG line, a Conrail train crossed over top heading into the yard, and it had the Conrail U30C with the crooked can-openner. That was an odd ball also. Thanks for watching ...

RUNNING. i knew a guy who quit serious photoing in 1975,,,why? because B&O retired their F7s. through the years i saw him a few times,,,shooting trains, but he just didnt have it anymore. likewise, i quit taking photos 20 years ago too. seeing the old stuff from years ago is depressing. btw, the old friend is about 85 years old and still kicking.
