At the Tories’ first gathering as the sole party of government for nearly 20 years, a wearied John Harris finds them brimming with the confidence of power.

Outside the party conference venue in Manchester, irate marchers protest about the awfulness of Conservative rule while Cameron, Osborne, Boris and the rest carry on regardless. But could they eventually be felled by the Tories’ hidden weakness - the fact that while Corbynmania surges on, the Conservative party is ageing and shrinking fast?

It's like a movie of a dystopian future, people shouting in the streets and protesting loudly while the rulers sit in the quiet calm of their conference handing down their diktats to the plebs.

+Hedsy .The plague lord That's a pathetic excuse! When have the Tories or Labour not lied to us? They do it on a daily basis yet people continue to vote for them. "Oh that was yesterday they told us that lie what they've told us today will be the truth". Tomorrow comes: Damn it duped again, can't say I seen that coming, why? Because I'm such a gullible fool that will believe every lie a suit and tie tells me to get into power. 4 years of lies with a coalition why would you expect anything different when they go it alone?

So what we have learned today: "Tories are mostly very old people who have problems connecting or even concerning themselves with people outside of their social sphere." Or, in layman's terms: "Nothing new."

***** I wouldn't disagree with that. Most were probably life-long conservatives, but before now socialism and leftist economy has been impossible to really manage. With the advent of the internet capitalism is already naturally transitioning into a more socialist structure, with smaller businesses growing all over the place and crowd-funding putting the power of consumption into the hands of the masses. It's a pretty unprecedented situation to be in and were it not for this I'd not be as hyped as I am.
@Bushflare
@Bushflare 8 жыл бұрын
***** Perhaps, but that's not a natural progression of the market. That's the existing market trying to wrestle more control, whereas the actual economy itself is demonstrably moving towards socialism. It's a big fight going on right now between Capitalism and Socialism, and between Democracy and Oligarchy.

***** I'm still not sold on leaving the EU, but if I was forced to choose I'd say out, because of how they basically held the Greek economy hostage for a mistake that is the fault of the EU (allowing a corrupt government of a country that had already gone bankrupt multiple times into the EU without properly validating their credit rating). That shit is criminal.
@Bushflare

slothkingn1 You mean this recent election? Tories got 36% of the votes, 51% of the seats, and 100% of the power. 1/3 of the UK ruling the other thirds. It's pretty fucked up.

"If they want to work hard and have a better future for themselves" ...who doesn't? What about the ordinary people working hard every single day on minimum wage. Who do you think collects your bins for you and cleans your streets while you're furthering yourself? Who do you think services your car and grows your food while you're working hard for a better future for yourself? What a load of cr*p.

I have nothing against people who want to better their own situation... who doesn't want to do that? What I take issue with is how the Conservative government has, time and time again, made life worse for the working class while pursuing better lives for themselves. How do they allow so many people to work themselves half to death, while a few make billions and barely lift a finger? All the while, the Conservative party stirs up hatred towards people on benefits.
@RF_Burns

@@TomJohnson67 They make life better for working class people. If you're working and in receipt of benefits, you're not working hard enough! Life on benefits should be painful and time limited.
@TomJohnson67
@TomJohnson67 2 жыл бұрын
@@RF_Burns Respectfully, I have to disagree with this. The minimum wage is far too low for many families to live reasonably, without also claiming benefits. Of course, I agree wages should be higher than benefits but people shouldn't have to work 60 hours a week just to scrape by.

I'd just like to thank the Tories for my recent wage rise. That extra £6 a week (with shift allowance) has settled all my finacial worries, I don't know how I'd have managed without it! Now I know how it feels to one of the 1%ers.

+homer blair Actually I would, because while it wouldn't have been as bad as the Tories getting back into power; it would have still been a Neoliberal puppet barely able to act like a human being. In a way losing did a lot of good for Labour, as now there is a real opposition leader in charge.
@AnnoyedDragon
@AnnoyedDragon 8 жыл бұрын
+homer blair Tories lied about being the party of the working class, so did UKIP. Voters are disillusioned by a lack of real choice due to Neoliberalism being the dominant political ideology of the past 30+ years, shifting from party to party or not voting at all. Now there is real genuine left wing opposition, not another Neoliberal puppet, we'll see what people's actual political alignment is. I don't believe for one minute all these Labour voters that jumped ship last election are genuinely right wing. That and there is a large percentage of the public who don't engage in politics because they feel unrepresented, which may have just changed. In short, I don't agree with you.
@AnnoyedDragon
@AnnoyedDragon 8 жыл бұрын
+homer blair Neoliberal ideology caused the economic crisis of 2008, it was their policies of deregulation and empowerment of financial services the last couple of decades that wrecked the economy. They didn't solve the crisis and they're doing the very things that caused it, encouraging speculation and another housing bubble. If you're against immigration then you cannot support Neoliberalsm, because immigration and outsourcing are some of the tools Neoliberals used in their "discipline of the workforce" back in the Thatcher era. They want mass immigration because it pushes down labour costs for business owners and helped fuel their housing bubble, which they then tried to accommodate by encouraging a credit bubble to fund consumerism despite the stagnant pay. Anyone who wants more Neoliberalism must be ideologically deluded because it's killing us. All they're doing right now is transferring as much public wealth into private hands as possible before the next big crash, which is coming under their guidance.

Why do people including working class people vote conservative, I think the answer to that question is in this video look at the way the leftists behaving they are behaving like rabid dogs shouting and trying to intimidate and silence their political opponents, for people who preach tolerance and diversity constantly the British left are the most vile and intolerant people in this country when it comes to opposing views, so it’s completely understandable that most calm and rational British people see the left in this country as utterly repulsive because it is, the conservatives are calm and reassured because they know their opponents are completely unpalatable to voters.
