Follow the conservation treatment and research of “Emblem of Folly,” a painting from colonial Cuzco. This is one of ten paintings in the Cuzco School style that were recently gifted to The Met as part of the Museum’s effort to collect works from colonial Latin America. José Luis Lazarte Luna, Assistant Conservator in Paintings Conservation, who was born and raised in Lima, Peru, says that conservation can “shine a light on those communities or artists that have not had the focus before.” These paintings have many unknowns, from the identities of their Indigenous makers to the materials they used. Committed study of these works can help create a better understanding of Latinx cultural identity and history.

So interesting that there was only 1 Cuzco school painting in the museum before 2014. That's very recent in art terms. I've recently fallen completely in love with the Cuzco school. The symbolism, the colors, the lace and the gold, it's so different and unique. I'm in love!! I love this little snippet of conservation, I could watch this all day!!!

Oh right the painting, the painting for Cuzco, the painting chosen specifically from the Cuzco tradition, Cuzco’s painting.

Very nice that the Met is expanding their collections to include these important works that were at the transitional crossroads of cultures.

Well done... Truly amazing when you think how long it took just to source the items to create the paint.

Beautiful and fascinating to see more of the conservation process! Cuzco school paintings clearly have a lot going for them, and a lot to teach us.

It makes me sad that these artists' authentic indigenous artworks and artistic traditions were systematically destroyed and their culture beaten out of them over the centuries. These paintings feel so hollow. So much was destroyed and lobotomized into "approved eurocentric" artwork.
Wait for the last one! 👀
