Consort 8
Courtly Ayres & Dances
Saturday September 19, 2020
Danced by Fiona Garlick, John Barnard, Anne Pickles and Raffaele Arcamone of The Early Dance Consort.
The Pavaniglia alla Romana or Spanish Pavane is a popular variant of the Pavane, using variations and embellishments drawn from the steps of the galliard and canary to "temper the gravity" of the Pavane, while filling the time and cadence of the music (Arbeau). Here settings by Michael Praetorius (Terpsichore, 1612), Cesare Negri (1602) and Fabritio Caroso (1600) are combined to accompany choreography from Negri, adapted for two couples.
This performance was part of Consort 8's COVID-safe concert.
