@@AboutEffingTime I mean it. Podcasts are the great innovation of our time. 20 years ago no one could've heard George Bamford scream about journalists for 5 minutes straight. I can listen to professionals talk about their craft and experts talk my ear off at the touch of a button. It really is crazy.

When the watch was announced, all my watch friends talked about was “if you could only have one, which would it be?” “How many are you gonna get?” It was all we talked about. Someone would post a picture of their new $0000 purchase and the reaction in the group would be “nice watch! So anyways, I really want the Mercury…”. I wanted the Saturn, I loved the idea of the ring around the subdial. I was one of those people shaking my head at the long lines and scalpers, saying “it’s gonna be online soon, just wait!” Now that the Swatch CEO has said there won’t be an online release…we don’t talk about it in my group. If a newbie brings it up, we all laugh and say “no way I’ll buy one, even at retail”. It’s become a pariah watch for us. I think that if they announced online sales tomorrow, it would be wildly successful…but not as successful as if they had done it from the beginning. I don’t think I’d buy one now.
@RussellGilder

Bought one for retail in NYC. Probably 30 people in line. 25 of them where scalpers and I had to show ID to purchase because it's one only. Wild

Personally I think moonswatch was a great idea and thought that it would be great for watch lovers like me who don’t have a lot of money to buy omegas or Rolexs to own something that was partly omega. But when the watch came out most people bought it and just stuck it in a locker of people who are probably wearing a patek. The bigger brands need to do things to make sure it’s still reaches the entire community and not just their usual buyers
@AboutEffingTime
@AboutEffingTime Жыл бұрын
I completely agree with this idea of it being good for those who aren't in the position or don't want to drop omega money on a watch, annoyingly it was ruined by those selling the watches for omega money. A

But at the end of the day, it's a piece of trash that bleeds onto wrist. For some reason fashion brand watches are not ok to wear and everyone says 'oh you could have bought a seiko' when it's the exact same situation, people are buying them for the brand name. But I keep hearing the moonswatch is cool and not to be taken too seriously. If rolex did something like this there would be uproar.
@Kiwigd

And the whole thing is spoiled by the fact that there are plenty of watch lovers around the world who do not have a Swatch Boutique in their country.. and consequently had no opportunity to buy one if they wanted one.

But sadly they are impossible to get. So instead I bought a Pagani Design PD1701. At a quarter the price of the Swatch I get a perfect Homage of the original and a brilliant Seiko movement. Cheers.

The G-Shock is the every person watch. It doesn't look out of place on anyone's wrist - it doesn't matter if you're 5, 25, 55 or 105, a man, a women or identify as something in between - there is a model for everyone. Features aside (who really uses all the features), its virtually indestructible and for the most part, pretty easily attainable. I love me a G-Shock.

I hope they don’t just limit this collaboration to the Moonwatch, this could be just the start of something of bigger future collabs. They could venture to expanding the concept to the Seamaster Omega x Swatch collab too: there are 31 varieties of the Sea theme for them to think about (e.g., Atlantic, Mediterranean, Red, Baltic, Arabian, South China, Celebes, etc). Another one is Railmaster collab series: the likes of Amtrak, British, Eurostar, Trenitalia, Oriental Express, SBB, etc). Better yet, the Constellation collab series would do great with so many possible variants.

The second episode was even better than the first. Well done. I think that Swatch made a big mistake by limiting it to a handful of swatch boutiques. Yes they got a lot of hype around the release because people thought it was a fun watch, but following the misleading claims (they will be available online) and lack of availability, a lot of those who became aware of swatch are only left with a bad taste in their mouth. Honesty would have gone a long way to curb that. PS: Keep the watch conspiracies coming.

Regarding the G-Shock question: G-Shocks are today, what Rolex was in the 1930s, 40s, 50s, and 60s. They're a durable watch with not that many frills, which "just work" and which will last. They're very well marketed and have an iconic design, which hasn't changed much over the years. I expect them to keep their design language well into the future and become future classics. All things which Rolex has done so well. I think that's why they're regarded as the "watch person's touch watch". There you go. That's my philosophy of G-Shock. I'd love a shirt. :)

@@AboutEffingTime thanks ! Just finished watching it and I loved it ! George was quite.... Loud 😂... Well, my opinion about the moonswatch is a bit of a mix oh what you explained : Prices of watches in general, Omega included are getting higher and higher, whereas people are not getting richer and richer... Moreover, I think the cost of the production of a real moon watch is getting higher and higher too... and the demand of the clients is still high I think.... So maybe Omega and Swatch thought about doin a "cheap but not so easily accessible" version of the moon watch.... Then, I think they did it in a very clever way and the way they launched it was pure genius....But quite risqué too. It went very positive luckily for Omega on Internet, YT, FB, IG etc.... But imagine it went the opposite way.... It would have been quite a disaster (not financial as producing a swatch watch isn't that high, but in terms of image de marque). That's why, in my opinion, they were quite clever to test the way it would be received at first by launching it with little amount of pieces... And in general, what is rare is wanted.... Eureka ! Even if it s not comparable to Rolex at all, the concept is quite the same in terms of you can't get it every where, you can't get it where you want, you have to wait.... So it makes it more desirable. So, to conclude I believe this was a very big marketing coup de maitre done by Omega and Swatch, on how to relaunch the sales after the Covid lockdowns.... Maybe it s also a coup de maitre in a way to tease children and people : they can get first an omega moonswatch..... before getting the real omega moon watch..... So yes, un coup de maitre ! tell me what you think. Btw : I do not have a moonswatch and I don't think I ll get one....😁

G shocks are popular because they aren't intimiding to anyone and their design, features, price and durability make it an easy choice for someone who is looking for a easy watch to purchase.

I hope this channel grows beyond measure! it's so much fun and so true and authentic, I cannot wait for the gang to talk as such on other issues in the watch collecting sphere, shortages, limited editions... concerning the "giving the press, the reigns" it's absolute genius, because they have cherry picked the press, they have made them feel special, it's the old saying, feed the mouth you own the hand! Adrian's apple example is somewhat flawed as apple always launches a product with a massive "review" and test area for reviewers... it's in another way, saying: what do you think? I think Swatch is having a genuine shortage pain, where else Rolex ADs are manufacturing it, so there is really no stress comparison here. anyways, guys! you're awesome!

Re: G-Shocks, I think it's SUPER hard to fault anything about them. There's likely one for everyone regardless of your tastes. They're tough as nails, the specs are great for the price, and they're just incredibly useful watches that will go anywhere and do anything.

I think the next step should be to announce online sales when they can improve production quantities, then, when sales start to dip off, announce a final date for purchase. I refuse to pay more than retail but would happily sit in a very long line knowing I've ordered one that will arrive at some point. Once this run is reaching its end limit, shift manufacturing to a new internal collaboration (I'd love a plastic *cough* BioCermaic 😏 Seamaster). With the brands within the group you could go down endless routes really - a Seamaster with different colours for different oceans, a Khaki Field with colours to match different scenarios (desert, forest, jungle, air etc) and a Bregeut Classique in vibrant colours would be a fun piece for sure but for the love of Christ, ONLINE sales. I'm not travelling from the South West to London to queue up and not get one. Online pre orders would mean some serious coin in the bank! These have the potential to be FUN. And they aren't for most of us who can't get one.

I had forgot the main issue with the Moon Swatch, and that is that it is not serviceable. If it breaks or gets too damaged it is junk. That is the beauty of the G-Shock. You can renew bezel, straps, customise etc etc. Nothing better than having a customised watch that no-one else does. On the subject of the G-Shock x Bamford. Wow that has blown up! Although I feel like I am the only person keeping mine?!?

Making a move to grow and make money isn't a conspiracy. Also, how in the world are price increases, more vertical integration, higher certification (METAS) etc. a sign of struggle? I know what you mean but still the argument feels odd to me. Was fun listening to your discussions, thank you for the content.

Swatch skinned the lamb instead of shaving the wool. They cashed in on the hype for this one single release, but now they put an entire generation off of ever collecting Swatch watches after how this was all handled. People forget watches they missed out on… people never forget how you treated them, though. Swatch rode the hype train straight over the side of the cliff. No casual collector will ever look at the brand the same after this.

I only have 2 watches, my Breitling Colt and my Ocean7 divers watch but after wearing my Apple Watches for the last few years I now want to get back into watches but I am shocked at how much watch prices have moved since I have been “away” from the scene. Your chat on Moonswatch is great timing and even taking into account all the conspiracy theories, (I fkn love the passion)you are absolutely spot on. I’m similar in that I want one, I don’t want one, I want one ad nauseam, the material BS also bothers me, it’s just bloody plastic call it what it is …. but unfortunately it’s probably the only Omega I will be able to afford now if they ever become available. I always wanted a Snoopy and was close at a few point and now, no chance unless I sell my internal organs. Quick question with the release of the Seiko 5 GMT, what’s the thoughts on it. I know the internals are not exciting but a GMT auto at the price is awesome IMHO. As an independent I’m seriously looking at a Yuma SAR, may try and grab that when released. Loving the channel chaps, keep at it and looking forward to seeing where it goes.

The reason why the G-Shock is so popular is that you get a Chronograph, a perpetual calendar, a GMT, a Rattrapante, a minute repeater, 12 months of power reserve and much more for 100 f*cking bucks. If that doesn't convince you...

I’m sorry, but did Mr. Bamford imply that the hype killed the moonSwatch for him while also singing the praises of his new G-SHOCK collab (in which no one will be able to get either)? Exclusively truly is king.

I’m with Adrian, it’s a great idea and I’ll absolutely buy a few at retail when I can - but a brand that size asking journos what to do and how to proceed is ridiculous. They had to know they had a licence to print a shed load of cash but everything since from the hype to the total lack of availability and the lack of news/updates shows they had no idea what to do or how to market it.

I agree with Adrian. Either this was a contrived manipulation on Swatch Groups part, or a complete loss of faith in their Marketing team. In hindsight Andrew's comment about the someone being fired was actually true. I can't imagine being the VP of marketing and suggesting to my CEO "let's let the punters decide".

If they had brought a new planet out each month they could have had close to a whole year’s worth of hype and perhaps been able to focus on producing each one for their launch in the greatest numbers possible. The launch could certainly have been a lot better.
