Meet Sally-Ann Remnant, a clinical nurse specialist in epilepsy who talks to us about her work and study into the impact of constipation upon people with epilepsy; particularly those who also have Intellectual Disability - and indeed how constipation can encourage seizures in some.
Sally-Ann works at Brighton & Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust and is a nurse consultant at Epilepsy Explained; providing training on epilepsy for professional carers and nurses.

No question that seizures and constipation/bms are totally connected. Smart, of course! If you are not absorbing your meds bc you are backed up, that you’ll be vulnerable to get seizures. Seizures are also a way that the body seeks balance. So if you are constipated, a seizure will come along and release that pressure and you will go to the bathroom. I think the research will show this. This makes me think that for those whose meds are working for them, that an alternative delivery system for meds to reach the blood stream, might be useful. Anyway, this topic is huge, and I think is unbelievable, given where we are today, that it’s is just now that we are are talking about this. This is the status of epilepsy’s research presently to me, just starting.. Thank you, however, for your channel and for opening up these doors.

I’ve lost 50 pounds since I developed TLE after brain surgery because I’m afraid to eat because I get backed up and I have focal seizures all day after having a hard BM. My neurologist doesn’t make the connection and just blows it off when I tell him about it. In fact I’m having a focal seizure as I write this. Super intense deja vu. It lasted on and off all day yesterday. I’m so glad someone is talking about it, thank you!

So sorry to hear you’re going through this! I hope you can get someone to listen to you!! Maybe an epilepsy nurse?

Yes I connected both when he was 7/8 he still has those issues and he’s 25 now 😢nurse just said give him laxatives everyday! It’s hard to get him to eat! I found a good probiotic that helped but unfortunately it’s no longer available so the struggle goes on!

Sally Anne is a very nice woman she was my epilepsy nurse at the East Surrey hospital at Redhill Surrey in 2002 very sympathetic and friendly nice to talk to .

Sally Anne knew all about epilepsy very knowledgeable woman l used to see her on Thursday's at her clinic she had at the hospital the neurologist l saw at the East Surrey hospital criticized me once when l was very nervous when l saw him he didn't understand the scar's having epileptic seizures had done to me .

We are glad you enjoyed the chat! Although constipation is a common side effect of epilepsy medications, it is worth keeping in mind that just because someone has epilepsy and constipation, the latter isn’t necessarily caused by the former and it could be worth checking out with your doctor.

My son is 7 yrs old with neurological issues. He has severe constipation issues and has seizures as well.

Can you share more information on this subject as I do feel that my Son got seizure episode when he is having pain stomach & go to toilet & fell down with seizure. There seems connection with constipation.
