A very stimulating talk, an intellectual treat, which showcased the stunning breadth of Salman Akram Raja's knowledge. In his person, he combines a stellar intellect with a fine-tuned moral compass--a combination that is quite rare, especially in Pakistan where there is no dearth of silver-tongued rogues or conversely dolts masquerading as intellectuals.

Absolutely brilliant! Two of the smartest minds at work here, and the caliber clearly shows. But I am disappointed that most of the focus was on the historic references, and on explaining the prevailing context, and not enough time was spent on the current state of affairs. The last question was spot on. The judiciary, in the last 16 months, has violated every moral, social as well as judicial construct. Or they have looked away while this violation has taken place in broad daylight. Individual rights have been tarnished. Institutions have been used for personal agenda and for political targeting. Here's the height of the mockery of what is happening as we speak. There's an active debate, "Practice and Procedure Act," where the legislature (a separate branch of the govt, mind you) is attempting to control the judiciary. Rather than throw out the reference, we have seven judges who seem to be inclined towards it. They don't see a problem when one of the three pillars of the government becomes the arbitrator-in-chief. Furthermore, how cases are picked, how they are processed, how judges conduct themselves, it is likely everyone is operating with absolute immunity. The entire appellate process is a sham. Here's a litmus test. Gather 100 of the finest legal minds in a room, and pose the questions that are before our judges. Watch them debate and come up with a decision. Let's allow precedence to provide guardrails. I seriously doubt that even one of them would take these decisions, or would condone such conduct. History is the ultimate judge, right? As you pointed out, Justice Nasim Shah came out and went public with what had transpired during those dark days. But can those tears and regrets rewind the clock? Can it undo the grave and irreparable damage that was caused? You mentioned several times when courts gave their tacit consent to the army "to do whatever they please, even if it means they rip apart the constitution." Just a few years later, we are openly condemning those decisions. Just like that, the story of these days would also be viewed in a few years' time, and I cannot imagine there being a faction that would attempt to justify these actions. It is absolutely shameful to see that is happening in Pakistan. My final point: this is like a runaway train, where people are fighting over who gets to control it. But nobody is thinking about the 240 million who are also riding this train, and are fast heading towards a cliff.

Wish Mr. Salman Akram Raja win in elections and play a role in reforming judiciary. The major problem of judges is that they themselves drag the cases which could be decided in one hearing. It has been this attitude that people wrong each other because they know that aggrieved party won't get justice from the courts. The cases pile up because everybody takes refuge behind the delayed judgments of courts. And the way in last two years judiciary has gotten exposed it has taken away the respect and sanctity associated even with apex courts.

Amazing talk! Mr. Salman is indeed an asset of Pakistan. He is right that our society and its values have rotten. He doesnt actually say it but thats what he implies. How to fix that is a mountain of a task and a Munir or Sharif or Khan or anyone else alone can not fix it. This will require some real sacrifices. Very enlightening.

Why people keep saying Pakistan got Freedom in 1947? Pakistan was born in 1947. A country that did not exist as of 1947, how it gets freedom and from whom? India as it existed as of 1947, got freedom from British. Then some muslims (remember some not all!) separated and formed a new country called Pakistan in the name of Islam. East Pakistan then formed as Bangladesh from Pakistan (that has east and west). Just as Bangladesh didn’t get freedom from Pakistan, so is Pakistan didn’t get freedom from British or India!

I agree with one of the comments made here that " Pakistan is a garrison state and citizens are talking about constitution !!! ". In Pakistan the army controls everything and I wonder if they even have a constitution ???. When did they adopt a constitution ??. Whats the point of this discussion when there is no fully empowered civilian govt in place first ??. Kick the army out of politics and then talk about constitution. The PM appoints the army general and then the army general boots the PM out 😂😂😂.

In the past, I used to think that Salman Akram was educated in the US and an enlightened individual, but seeing him take the oath on Quran for PTI made me realize that even educated people today are brain washed robots. Religion and politics don't mix. The term politics refers to compromises made for the betterment of the country. One alternative approach to addressing societal issues without religious influence is to focus more on secular values and principles, such as equality, justice, and respect for all individuals. This can be achieved through promoting inclusivity, education, and open-mindedness, as well as encouraging critical thinking and dialogue among individuals from diverse backgrounds. Additionally, implementing policies and programs that prioritize the well-being and interests of society as a whole can help address societal issues in a non-religious and unbiased manner.
