Constructing a PIG TROUGH from Recycled TIRES

In this video, I take on an experimental project of building a new pig trough from old tires and some sawmill lumber. My pigs have outgrown the feed bowls for their daily feed ration so I need something larger but heavy and durable so they can't toss it over the hill.

When we made tire troughs we would make the base just like you did, then take the tire and cut at the crown like you did, but then, we would pull the tire inside out which leaves the bead facing down to tack onto the base. These took a beating and worked well. It never ceases to amaze me how mud can sit on top of a hill and not dry out quicker than other areas. You have well made and articulate videos, thanks for sharing.

I was thinking the tires on the bottom were a bad idea until I saw all the mud and how it sinks in. Now I think that was a good idea after all. I hope it works out well for the long term. The pigs seem to like it. :-)

Just a thought. If you take a couple boards and cut a curve or arch into them you could place the boards inside the tire and sandwich the tire between the boards. That would work more like a beadlock that you mentioned in the video. It would also distribute the force of the screw over a larger area preventing tear out.

My husband says, Re the feeding trough, instead of screwing the tyres to the platform and having to keep an eye on the screws, how about drilling through the tyre where you put the screws in and continue drilling through the platform at the same time, then using a running stitch, thread fencing wire up and down connecting the tyre to the platform, just an idea, We love your videos Dawn & sandancer

Believe it or not a simple razor blade cuts the sidewalls rather easily. I use two tires per feeder. Each tire is lag bolted (4-5 each depending on the size of the tire) with washers into the heaviest scrap lumber I have laying around. This year that meant 2x6 platform sitting on 4x4 runners. I don’t cut the bottom bead out as the rain seems to wash them out nicely or a bucket or two of water. This set up seems to accommodate 4-5 pigs per feeder. It usually lasts at least two batches of pigs before it needs maintenance and then it’s usually just a simple tire rotation and reuse the bolts. I get the tires free from a local tire shop. Big truck tires are great for the bigger pigs and car tires work great for the little guys. The pigs tend to “stomp” the feeders into the ground as they eat and I don’t have problems with flipping...but there is always that one...first in line to the butcher!

Troy, I'm thinking that putting the tires on the bottom raise the center of mass too high. You add some hungry pigs tussling on top and the whole contraption might be heading down the hill.

You could fill the tires that are the feet with cement to add weight. Put the tire in a thick plastic trash bag to hold in the wet cement. Pull it tight and attach it to the base. Mix up a couple bags of cement and pour it into the tires. When dry it will add a lot of weight to the feeder.

Troy you always have great ideas. I think the first thing I’d do is make more wood chips. Mud has been the bane of my existence for the last 40 years! The tire feeder may need the bottom tires cut down so the pigs don’t think they need to jump in it. We used the 5 feet PortaTrough by Premier One. We’ve used them about 10 years with sheep so it’s what we had on hand and didn’t have to build something else. Only had 7 pigs this year and used 2 troughs for 10 months. Neither were destroyed, we’ll use them again.

We used some of the largest lag screws we could find. Used 4 per tire. The pigs do tear the tire off of the platform sometimes and when they do we just rotate to tire to a new spot where there hasn’t been screws and reattach. The bigger lag screws do stay in the wood and the tire typically rips off the screws. If they were to come out of the woods I think it would be tough for them to swallow. It appears that when they do tear a tire loose it’s because they are trying to get that last little morsel from the space between the tire and platform. Overall been very happy with ours. Cheap to build, relatively pig proof, easy to move and keeps the feed off of the ground.

Please consider using a bowl insert for the tires, they are available in stores and online. Exposed steel wire used in the tires construction can ingested by the pigs, causing internal health problems 😬 The wire can also cut or poke the pigs. There is also the potential of chemicals from the tires leaching into the pig food, especially from heat and sunlight.

Just lay the platform on the two hole tires first to make certain the pigs are tall enough to get to the feed...it they are the correct heigth, screw them to the platform.....if you screw them to the platform first, you can always cut the tire down the middle of the treat to reduce the heigth..... Great idea you have for a feed station...as good or better than cutting a hot water heater in half lengthwise... Whatever you decide take 3 ft of rebar and plant one on each end of platform and attach to the platform with some metal plumbers tape to keep the pigs from flipping the platform over...

I reckon I'd be chaining the station to a fence so I don't have to wade through pig mud to feed them. I don't bounce as well as I did when I was younger, and that looks slippery - especially with a bucket of feed in your hand and a bunch of pigs pushing in.

Here's my 2 cents. I think maybe the tires underneath will let them flip or move it easier because the platform will be springy and let's face it if a pig can mess things about they will, and a 4X4 underneath would be heavier. I have seen the farmbuilder video where he makes them and have wanted tp try them so your change will be a learning experience for both of us. Good luck!

Possibly anchor the trough you are making to the ground with some of your gas pipe with a 90 degree bend at upper end of the pipe..c...... I use an iPad.... recently, it has been acting very strange.... difficult to type....always typing wrong characters etc.... I think it might be interesting if you could hillbilly engineer a sort of squared “u” shape of pipe that would fit across the poplar wood in the center of your new feed trough... 45degree cuts welded together maybe.....to produce 90degree downward angle at each side of trough with those downward legs being about 3feet long and driven into the ground to act as a sort of “clamp” holding the center of the trough down.... perhaps a 200lb pig could not easily flip that over.... just a thought for you... enjoy watching you and you sense of humor and adventure! God bless you real well, Troy.

When those tires fill with mud it will only add weight and stability - and will freeze faster than the parts they walk on. A hard freeze, it will be like rock, and very heavy.

I was thinking that the better way would be cut one section of the tire from back wall to front wall of the tire. then Get a metal piece about the width of the tire and 1 foot long heat it up and press it on the inside of the tire too stretch the tire out so it goes from being a circle to a line. Next do the same for one side of the wall so you increase the height of the trough. then attach the bottom wall of the tire to the underside of your wood frame and take another tire cut it into multiple pieces; flatten it and use it to form the underside of the pig trough. This would allow less waste of wood and increase the food holding capacity.

In the same way that you are giving this Wisconsinite winter tips (-8 as I write this at noon with wind chills between -25 to -40 below), let this non-pig-raising hobby farmer give you some thoughts. If they do flip it, you could always use some concrete in those base tires pretty easily. I would think that would anchor it, but the flip side (pardon the pun) is it would seriously limit where you can use it. Of course, you have your feed trailer you previously made for that. One thought when you were debating how to attach the bowl tires to the platform, my thought was sandwiching the bottom lip (sidewall) between the platform and another circular piece, essentially making that the bottom of the bowl. Wood would be an obvious material, and maybe perpendicular to the platform boards would reduce leakage, or maybe a food grade plastic material. I get you want to use what you have around, but a thought. I would then bolt those to the platform and with flat washers and lock nuts or LocTite Threadlocker. You shouldn't lose any hardware that shows up later in your bacon. My 2 cents. As always, I enjoy the videos.

Have you tried moving your feeder yet? I don't think it's going to move. Those tires are sucked into the mud good. I'm using the bottom of a 55 gallon drum as feeders (3 ea) and waterer. Get some mud around the rim, it ain't moving without some effort. Could build a little roof on top of the divider to keep the rain out. Good luck.
