We analyzed years of LinkedIn data to determine which schools have the most placements into management consulting. We are analyzing undergraduate placement into MBB (McKinsey, BCG, Bain), which are the top three firms worldwide. Many private equity firms and hedge funds will hire straight out of MBB and MBB tends to be a role that gives you a high amount of optionality.

You should do a video on what the career paths are once you already move to they buy side. Such as moving from PE to a hedge fund (and vice versa) or back into IB etc.

I think one additional consideration is the "old money" old boys network factor that boosts the liberal arts schools' numbers. Appearance, social polish, and that "it" factor would explain Harvard's exceptional performance in your review despite MIT, for example, having a more technically competent student population on average.

That's a good point. I do think that appearance and social polish is a valuable trait that consulting firms look for, so it's no surprise. I also would guess that consulting is probably not as popular at MIT relative to more technical roles.

I've done an internship at GS IBD and BCG and I'd actually say that consulting was a lot harder, atleast they made you think a lot more on the job. I also found the interview much trickier and it required more preparation that you had to do besides your university classes.

Great content! It would be nice if you can make a MBA version for IB and MBB. Personally I’m comparing MBA programs in Canada with the goal to get into IB or MBB after graduation. Looking forward to seeing more of these videos :)

Great Video again Matt. When doing per capita do you have the numbers for Wharton undergrad alone cause I think the per capita figures will be much more comparable to Harvard given then MBB and top banks recruit much more heavily in Wharton.

It's tough to just do Wharton undergrad because there are other faculties at Penn that recruit for consulting too. And if you did that, you'd have to try to only select for Harvard economics / business focused undergrads, which is tough. You can just Google for these numbers if you want to think about it that way though.

Is Bain capability centre considered as a part of MBB.I know a school in India where they hired 45 students last year

Great info! But I'm a little confused since I believe 11 people from UT were hired at Bain last year alone while the chart only has 14 consultants from 2014 - 2020.

The data scraper isn't 100%. Lots of folks use different titles or have their profile set to private. It also excludes all people who have or end up getting masters degrees. The numbers won't be fully accurate, but I still think it's generally directionally correct as those limitations apply to all schools.

Does being from a target school stay as important if you have an MBA, from a smaller private liberal arts university? At least my school is AACSB accredited, but I dont know how much help that is tbh.

If you have an MBA, firms will tend to care more about whatever school that is vs. your undergrad school.

Harder for me to do by individual year, but it's ~15 across this data set, so roughly 2-3 per year. It seems doable, but you have to be pretty exceptional.

I believe that McKinsey is the overall best firm so I wanted to highlight that to see if there were any interesting trends. There weren't really any interesting takeaways though.

How much does a referral help in Investment Banking?

A casual referral from a junior employee might help get you a first round interview, but not much more. A referral from a senior employee or partner is going to go... very far. A lot of the top BBs are probably like 1/3 relationship hires.

Not sure if there's enough interest for a full video, but Queen's and Ivey are the best. I think every other major school will have maybe a handful of spots.

Not great, they're in the next crop of schools not included on this list. It seems like there's maybe 2-4 people per year that get into MBB based on the data.
