What are the 8 Principles of Batho Pele
Batho Pele principles are guidelines on how government employees and other public servants should behave when engaging with the public and when providing service to members of the community. These principles are aimed at improving service delivery by encouraging public servants to prioritize serving people, essentially putting people first when delivering such service.

1. What is Batho Pele?
‘Batho Pele’ is an expression in the Sesotho language, which means, ‘People First’. In the context of the public service in South Africa, the concept Batho Pele refers to putting members of the public first and considering their needs and priorities when rendering government services.
The Batho Pele White Paper is the national governments' White Paper for Transforming Public Service Delivery. It is all about giving good customer service to the users of government services. All public servants are required to practice Batho Pele.
Batho Pele is an approach to get public servants committed to serving people and to find ways to improve service delivery.
2. ORIGINS OF BATHO PELE
Batho Pele is an initiative that was launched in 1997 by the South African government through a White Paper on Transforming Public Service Delivery.The aim of this initiative, was to transform the Public Service, and instil a culture of accountability, and caring by public servants.
Primarily, the White Paper on Batho Pele is about how public services should be provided, and specifically about improving the efficiency and effectiveness of the way in which government services and other public sector service are delivered.
3. 8 Principles of the Batho Pele
There are Eight Batho Pele principles, which were developed to serve as acceptable policy, and legislative framework, regarding service delivery within the public service. These principles are aligned with the following Constitutional ideals of:
a. Promoting and maintaining high standards of professional ethics.
b. Providing service impartially, fairly, equitably and without bias.
c. Utilising resources efficiently and effectively.
d. Responding to people’s needs, the citizens are encouraged to participate in policy making, and;
e. Rendering an accountable, transparent, and development-oriented public administration.
The 8 Batho Pele principles are as follows.

5. Information
6. Openness And Transparency
7. Redress and,
8. Value For Money.
