Another 10a neighbor! Can't grow grapes, have dogs who may try to enjoy them, need to try pineapple guavas; have passion flower vines, four beautiful mango trees, two bananas, two orange, lime, pink grapefruit, four pomegranates, a moringa tree, black everbearing mulberry, and one Wurz avocado. I put the trees into the ground surrounding a house on a quarter acre. A dozen southern highbush blueberries in three varieties in six five gallon containers planted in miracle gro have been covered in rust since I bought them. Having great fun hoping for lots of fruit in Cape Coral, FL

Greetings! You have a very nice collection. I wish I had as much room as you do, lots of room for planting with a quarter acre. I just added a few more trees to my collection. I have another video that should be ready for posting soon. I'll show them in that video. I also have several trees that I just ordered and should be here soon. Running out of room for planting, but having lots of fun growing them. Best of luck with your trees and thank you for visiting!

If you feed your finger lime with fish and seaweed solution, when you water, you should get a good flush of new leaves. I feed mine fruit trees in pots, with seaweed solution every time I water. Feed your figs with lots of food, sheep or chicken pellets for fruiting. They are heavy feeders, plus feed seaweed solutions, every time you water. Great garden 👍

I have just purchased 1 jujube tree and it has tiny fruits and lots of flowers in a small pot (20cm pot). Should I put it in a bigger pot or should I wait till it dormant. Can you please tell me what’s kind of potting mix I need for jujube tree? How big is the pot should I need? Thanks so much for sharing your experience and helpful information 😍

Thank you! I would wait until the tree is dormant before transplanting and I would go to about a 10 or 11 inch container. When growing in a container it’s best to only go up 1 or 2 sized pots each time you transplant. As for the type of soil, please search my channel for a video titled “Lang and Li Jujube trees (AKA: Chinese Date) growing in containers and are starting to flower.” I talk about how I transplanted them.

@Zone10aBackyardOrchard 3 жыл бұрын
Greetings! The soil mix I initially used for my avocado was a cactus soil mix I picked up from the big box store. I have since amended the soil so the mix is now Cactus soil mix, perlite, organic soil mix, peat moss and worm castings. The mixing ratio is about 2 parts cactus soil mix to 1 part of the rest. As for the fertilizer, I fertilize 3 times a year with a 4-5-4 organic fertilizer. I also give most of my container grown trees a top soil dressing once a year. If you haven’t already, please see my previously uploaded video titled “Hass Avocado Tree getting ready to flower”. Happy gardening and thanks for watching!

I did make those wooden containers. They have a 4 degree tapper, but roughly measure 24x24x24. I don’t have enough space in my backyard to plant all my trees so I had to grow some in containers. At first I was worried I wouldn’t get good fruit production, but they have done well. Some do better than others, but overall I’m satisfied with their growth/fruit production. I have not pruned any that are in the large wooden containers or the grow bags. Some of my trees that were transplanted from traditional round plastic pots did require root pruning. I have a fig tree growing in a large round plastic pot. It’s been in that pot for about 7 years. After this seasons harvest I plan on transplanting. It will be interesting to see if it will require root pruning. I’ll likely show the results in one of my future videos. Thanks for visiting!

How often do you water your containers? I have two trees in 15 gallon containers now. I water them twice a week. I always wonder if that is too little or?
@Zone10aBackyardOrchard
@Zone10aBackyardOrchard Жыл бұрын
There are several variables to consider such as type of tree (deciduous, evergreen, drought tolerant, etc.) climate and type of soil just to name a few. I’ve found that the best way to gauge the watering needs is to physically check it. I’ll stick my finger into the soil about an inch and a half or 2. I’ll water if it’s dry at that depth. Once you’ve done that a few months you will have a better idea when to water. With my container trees I usually water once a week during cooler months then increase to about twice a week during the hotter months (we don’t get too many of those in my area). Thanks for watching!

Yes. All of the wooden planters you see in my video I built myself. They are not too complicated, just very time consuming. The hardest part is figuring the angle cuts to create the tapered appearance (which is 4 degrees). The length of the top boards I started at about 2’ then reduced as I worked my way down. I have a miter saw which helped get precise angles and cuts, but it would be possible to make those cuts with a simple handsaw, so no real specialized tools are needed.

I am having a lot of problems growing in containers. What is the soil mix that you use and how do you maintain and fertilize? Beautiful plants by the way.
@Zone10aBackyardOrchard
@Zone10aBackyardOrchard 10 ай бұрын
I have used several different soil mixes over the years, but generally they are all similar with only slight variations. Mostly I use cactus soil mix, peat moss, organic soil mix, worm castings, perlite and a few trace elements. I previously posted a couple of videos titled “Lang and Li Jujube trees (AKA: Chinese Date) growing in containers and are starting to flower” and another titled "Repotting my fruit tree" please search my channel. In those videos I talk more about the soil mix. For fertilizer it depends on the type of tree, but generally I use liquid or granular organic fertilizers. And I only fertilize during the growing season (3 to 4 times). Some trees that are sensitive to fertilizer, like my mulberry, I only use liquid fertilizer like kelp and seaweed in small amounts once a year. It’s difficult to say what is the best soil mix or fertilizer schedule since not all trees are alike. Some require specific needs while others thrive regardless. I hope the above info serves as a good guide. Also, most fruit trees do not do well when they are water logged. Be sure to check soil moisture level before watering. When I started container growing fruit trees that was one of the biggest problems I had (over watering). Now I use good draining soil and only water when top inch or 2 of the top soil is dry. Thanks for visiting!

Some trees will go through a little transplant shock. I would give it some B-1 Vitamin (liquid form) and make sure it is properly watered. Also, if planted in direct sunlight, I would give it a little protection from the sun with a shade cloth. Be sure to keep a close eye on it. Hopefully, you will see signs of recovery within a few days. I hope this helps. Best of luck and let me know how it does.

Hello, how do you make sure the soil does not sink over the years in the very big containers?
@Zone10aBackyardOrchard
@Zone10aBackyardOrchard Жыл бұрын
Yes, over time the soil level will drop if left alone. What I do to avoid this is I add a top soil dressing after the first year of being transplanted. After that I repeat the process about every 2-3 years. By doing so it replenishes the soil with added nutrients and keeps the soil level from dropping. If you haven’t done so, please check one of my previously uploaded videos titled “My 1st harvest off a Mexicola Avocado tree growing in a container.” In that video I talk about how I make and apply my top soil dressing. At some point in the future I will likely make a video with more detail on this subject. Thank you for watching!

@Zone10aBackyardOrchard
@Zone10aBackyardOrchard 3 ай бұрын
Yes, especially the Meyer Lemon that is in a 22” round plastic container. It has been in that container for about 7 yrs. Although it is doing well (currently has a very heavy set of blooms) I do need to transplant to a larger container. All of my trees that are in round plastic containers, and grow bags, will eventually be up potted. The ones that are in the large wooden containers I’m not too worried about. I’ve had some of those in the same container for about 5 years and they have done well. Thank you for visiting!

Nice trees! Are those dwarf trees or they are normal trees? I have to ice Cream bean trees in containers. Both were grown from seeds. So that means that’s It is going to have a huge size. But, Is it posible to grow them in container?
@Zone10aBackyardOrchard
@Zone10aBackyardOrchard Жыл бұрын
Most of my trees are on regular root stock. I do have a few citrus trees that are on semi dwarf root stock. My Ice cream bean tree is on regular stock. I grew mine in a container for a little less than a year and it did well. I should mention that these trees are fast growing. I’ve had to prune mine several times since planting in the ground. Due to the fact that it is fast growing it would be best to plant it in the ground. If that’s not an option you might consider a large container. My Pakistan mulberry is also a fast growing tree and I’ve had mine in containers for over 4 years. It’s done really well and produces good sized crops. Best of luck and thank you for visiting!

I bought it nearly 5 years ago. I had a difficult time finding this variety. I finally found one at a nearby nursery, but they only had mature trees. It was about 9 ft tall and came in a 45/50 gal container. Way bigger than what I wanted. I prefer to buy in the 5 - 10 gal range because they are easier to plant and are more affordable. @Zone10aBackyardOrchard
@Zone10aBackyardOrchard 6 ай бұрын
Yes, about once a year I will add some mycorrhiza on the top of the root ball. I then add a top soil mix which is a mixture of worm castings, peat moss, organic soil mix, small amount of chicken manure and azomite. Thank you for visiting!

The majority of my trees get a Kellogg Organic Plus 4-5-4 Fruit Tree fertilizer. There are a few other fruit trees that require different NPK ratios or other supplemental nutrients, but all are organic.

I couldn't find the type of containers I wanted at the big box stores so I wound up making these. They are tapered, but the rough measurements are 24 inches all around. That works out to be around 60 gallons. I’ve had several viewers express interest on them. I need to build a few more so I will likely document the build process for a future video upload, just in case someone would like to try and build one. Thank you for visiting!

@Zone10aBackyardOrchard
@Zone10aBackyardOrchard Жыл бұрын
If they are 21 inches all around then they are about 40 gallons. Here is how to calculate the gallons: There are 231 cubic inches in 1 US Gal. To calculate cubic inches you would multiply the width by the length by the depth. A 21 x 21 x 21 inch container would come out to about 40 gallons.

@Zone10aBackyardOrchard
@Zone10aBackyardOrchard Жыл бұрын
Most of the fruit trees I have should also do well in your area. There may be a few exceptions, but for the most part they should do well. In my area we don’t get freezing temperatures and from what info I could get via internet, your area is about to same - may even be slightly warmer. The good thing about container grown trees, especially young ones, is that they can be moved to a warmer area during winter for protection from the cold. Best of luck and thank you for watching!

Please sir, what type of soil do you use for your plant container ?
@Zone10aBackyardOrchard
@Zone10aBackyardOrchard Жыл бұрын
I have used several different soil mixes over several years. Generally, for my fruit trees I use a mix that is well draining. I live in an area that has mild summers compared to other parts of the country so water retention is not as critical like it might be for someone living in areas that get much hotter summers. The mixes I use are cactus soil mix, peat moss, organic soil mix, worm castings, perlite and a small amount of chicken manure. I also mix in some azomite and sprinkle some mycorrhiza on top of the root ball and any exposed side roots when planting. If you haven’t already seen my previously posted video titled “Lang and Li Jujube trees (AKA: Chinese Date) growing in containers and are starting to flower” please search my channel. In that video I talk more about the mixing ratio. Thanks for visiting!

Whichever nursery you buy fruit trees from will be able to tell you what zones they are compatible with. You should also try to find out how many chill hours your area gets. I live in a low chill area (about 100 to 200 chill hours) so when I buy deciduous fruit trees I have to buy low chill trees. You might be able to find your chill hours via google search or at fruitsandnuts.ucdavis.edu/chill-calculator. Good luck!

Yes, spider mites and some small caterpillars are the only 2 that I’ve encountered. They were easily eliminated by spraying some neem oil on the leaves. By the way, squirrels like avocados so if you have any in your area they might get to them as well.
