A heavy rainstorm hits Charleston, SC while a Maersk cargo ship docks and carries out cargo operations at the terminal. Come aboard with the ship's Mate On Watch as he walks you around the ship in the rain and discusses important things to look out for while working cargo in the rain.

Another thoughtful and informative film, Bryan. I hadn't thought about the implications of cargo working in the rain for years, not least because most of my experience in the late 70's was that rain stopped play every time, as on breakbulk vessels we'd have to close the hatches pronto to protect the cargo and in any case the wharfies (aka stevedores/dockers/longshoremen) would mysteriously evaporate at the slightest hint of rain. Thanks for sharing your view of the world enabling us to experience it all, if by proxy.

Was just in Charleston from the 1st to the 6th for the first time in ohhh... 20+ years, and oh man how it's changed so much from when I was stationed there while I was in the navy. Some parts I recognize and some I didn't recognize at all. It saddened me to see what very little is left of the former Charleston Navy Base as I drove through it. But at least a couple of our buildings, the former Commander Submarine Group Six and the former Fleet Ballistic Missile Submarine Training Center buildings are still standing, though where our barracks were located across the street from the FBMSTC is now just an overgrown field.

Great videos Bryan. I am currently working in ocean export and import logistics operations for a 3PL company. Considering going back to study nautical science in the fall to pursue a career as a deck officer. Would you recommend this line of work. Currently in Ireland.

I saw in a previous video, that the cargo controls had a Roll-Royce branding. What is that is operating by Rolls Royce equipment? I'm assuming an engine?

Hi Bryan, what happens to toilet water on these ships? Is it pumped out at port, or dumped out to sea?

It's a heavy rain. Is the hatch cover at the container vessel water tight? If so, why do water ingress the hold? If not, why don't make it water tight? Then the bilge well won't be filled with water. Thanks.
@gidovke
@gidovke Жыл бұрын
My guess is that the rain may not delay the cargo operations. That means that you have to open your hatches when doing cargo. The other hatches are being kept closed.
