I can never understand why Peter Doig is so esteemed. Although his style is recognizable, he has a noted lack of technical prowess which doesn't impress. And what about Bartholomew Beal or Ian Francis?

Hi there, thank you for tuning in and for sharing these interesting thoughts. I believe this lack of technical prowess is actually what makes Doig so appealing. This happens very often in fact, think of Raoul De Keyser's 'crappy' paintings, yet they are so wonderful

Great video. I find it interesting how photograpy has influenced the work of so many of these painters. Yet many do not accept photograpy as a legitamate form of fine art. Beginning almost 200 years ago with Niepce photography remains a stepchild of Art.

Hi George, thanks for tuning in and even more for your interesting comment. I strongly believe in photography as an art form, but I believe it asks a greater effort from the viewer due to the over saturation of photographic images these days. On the other hand, Thomas Ruff or Wolfgang Tillmans are two photographers who are undoubted one of the most influential contemporary artists in the world (top 30). Sadly, too many people stubbornly hold on to craftsmanship as a pretext for 'real' art. I believe this is the reason why photography indeed remains a stepchild of Art with capital A.

@@contemporaryartissue Hi, i believe photographers are partly responsible for the fact they are not given attention as legitimate artists: too many of them display arty journalistic reports, as diary for their journeys, or kind of, by so leave people bathing in their association photo = mere reports. Just an opinion.
@damiester1
@damiester1 2 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure that's entirely true. I see quite a lot of photograph prints being sold in commercial art galleries at much higher prices than you'd find for a traditional painting. Also, while we should celebrate photography as an art form, there's no need to criticise those who value craftsmanship. For artists who have spent decades on their craft, it's not surprising to see that "stubborness" as you call it. Also, it's always a topic of discussion when craftsmanship isn't included such as "found objects" like the infamous "fountain" and certain other forms of amateurish styles. TBH, traditional artists have been losing ground in the industry since photography was invented. Most people hire wedding photographers, graphic designers etc. over illustrators. So it's a much more complex issue as to what is art than just conventions vs photography.

I like your use of the word BANAL to describe an artist work as boring etc. Thanks for this art terminology. In regards I am Modern than Contemporary and contemporary art was promoted after Modernism from the late 1970's of 1979/80 which seem to me was mainly of Anti-Art, Non-Art and Bad Art. Modern Art was blocked pushed to the outside, having nowhere central to show (now termed as Outsider Art). Theres probably good Contempory Art but hasnt had any popular exposure and needs to be brought out to the fore. The New British Contemporary art scene back then (over 30 years ago) which artist I found interesting (and dated now?) was from the Scottish and Glasgow school of painters: Peter Howsen, Steven Campbell, Adrian Wiszniewski and John Bellany. The up and coming female Scotish artist Jenny Saville whos in your video was looking good and has done well compared to her male Scotish fellows. Its just hard to make a living as an artist with-out good support, promotion and gallery backing. The Contemporary artist in this video I would not rush out and see in a Exhibition and still find most if not all Contempory Art Exhibitions boring, shallow and crap and would use the term CRAPISM to describe the (Banal) art scene from the late 1979/80's.

I think where you go wrong in your list by calling certain artists the best, which you walk back in your comment saying algorithm picks them from top galleries,, etc.. That's why so few women artists,, artists of color.. Don't blame me,, its science.. Best is not a scientific term,, it's a subjective term.. Better to stick with top or leading artists. Also still life painters are not figurative painters, when no figures are present.. That should be clear to anyone since you already have a category for still-life painters. Just put them there and leave them there. All that said, there were some very talented painters presented here, that I was previously unaware of. A couple genuine revelations to me. So thank you.
@contemporaryartissue
@contemporaryartissue 2 жыл бұрын
Dear Thomas, thank you for tuning in and interesting comment. I agree 100% the terminology 'leading' or 'top' or 'most influential' is more accurate than 'best'. Concerning the term 'figurative', I must add there is a distinction between figure painting and figurative painting, the first referring solely to paintings of figures, the latter being (officially) defined as 'representing recognizable forms derived from life'. But I would argue the term 'representational painting' is even better, but it has a less accessible connotation. Happy to hear you discovered some new painters, thank you for reaching out and have a great day!
@tthomas184
@tthomas184 2 жыл бұрын
@@contemporaryartissue I agree. I always heard recogniseable paintings derived from life referred to as Representational painting, which I think is more accurate, as it includes still life, landscape, and figurative painting. Figurative painting includes paintings of single figures, groups of figures, and also portraits. Thanks for the comment.
