I purchased this camera dolly based off of this video, and I must say it is pretty darn good. Yes, the most important things to remember are the camera lens must be pointed towards the side with the wider wheels, otherwise it will become unbalanced and fall. Make sure your surfaces are incredibly clean and free of bumps and warps, because the dolly is so sensitive it will pick up everything.

I find it odd that they still haven't thought of putting the steering scale in units of distance from the center point of the subject out to where you want to run the dolly, i.e. curve radius. Who is figuring out the degrees to set the steering wheel and getting the arc correct the first time?
@freakytechreviews
@freakytechreviews 2 ай бұрын
You are absolutely correct and an oversight by Neewer, and myself for not mentioning it. It is an absolute PAIN finding the proper arc to keep a camera focused in one spot. But I'm doing a video soon on the DJI Osmo Pocket 3 that has product tracking that completely solves it for me at least.

I would love one that's like 2x the size and payload but can't seem to find anything similar. Any recommendations? I'm typically shooting with some heavier lenses and don't think this thing would stay on its wheels. Would mostly be filming on concrete floors as well so something with some larger tires would be ideal. I've found manual ones, but I love the idea of app integration and the stepper motors. Great video, really well thought out and well edited. 🤘
@freakytechreviews
@freakytechreviews 6 ай бұрын
Thank you for the complements my friend! And I love the idea of a larger version of these, but that is going to be a tough find with a similar budget. The Edelkrone DollyOne has a payload capacity of 15lbs, but it's not larger and potentially has even smaller wheels. Anything bigger than these from what I can find seem to be manual to use. Have you thought of a slider? It wouldn't have the curving shot that this dolly has, but can hold heavier gear if you get a good one.
@GrindhousePerformance
@GrindhousePerformance 6 ай бұрын
@@freakytechreviewsI've got a manual slider now. I've wanted a powered one but so many of them seem 'just OK' despite being hundreds of dollars, so I haven't pulled the trigger on one. I liked the idea of the dolly because of the rotation, and because it was scalable to using on a desk or on my garage floor. Maybe some opportunity for someone with some robotics background to come up with something as an in between I guess! The curving shot is a big bonus to me on shooting cars

Unfortunately I have yet to find a loop mode :/ But I think this is by design because of how easily it can fall off of a surface. Although I would LOVE for Neewer to implement this feature, as I'm sure it's a software based function.
@delasse3178
@delasse3178 4 ай бұрын
i cant find anything that would indicate whether one should go with this over the "original" version. This one is updated in some ways, but the design supports itself more in the first version I think. The motorized wheel is balanced by the mirrored inside wheels on the original, more collapsable version but that's less so the case here.
@freakytechreviews
@freakytechreviews 4 ай бұрын
If it helps, this one has one flaw that has really bothered me and while I mentioned it in the video, I didn't emphasize enough how much of a problem it can be. Lens pointed towards the front corner opposite form the motor side will often tip because it can't hold them up. While not a dealbreaker, it definitely is something more people should know.
@delasse3178
@delasse3178 4 ай бұрын
@@freakytechreviews this is really the thing i was concerned with and i appreciate you mentioning it in the video. in particular, in combination with locomotion, the original version is setup in the exact way you would want to counterbalance the weight and single motorized wheel; and this is regardless of whether you're setting it up to turn or go straight. So long as both wheels are lined up, you have the exact counter you want. I think that that aspect of the design was forgotten or disregarded for this model, unless I am missing something. Mine arrives in a few days... but thinking I could have just gone with an OG. Similarly, the DL300 only seems like a stepdown from the DL200 to me. Unless you go AWD with DL300 setup(people complain it's not 2WD), the OG seems like the most practical way to do this minimalistically.
@delasse3178
@delasse3178 4 ай бұрын
i thought i commented on this but i guess not. i wanted to say that I received my unit and my conclusion is that the these are designed backwards, nor can they achieve the logical physical properties of locomotion as in the first one. Does it matter a ton? Perhaps no, maybe not... but if your camera is falling over I'm pretty sure it's related to their design. Even their own pictures show the controls on the unit are turned backwards when shooting it in a radius. With the controls facing you, I don't believe the correct wheel is being motorized. With the original model, I believe the unit is balanced by the single wheel's locomotion being destributed by the opposite wheels and their equal length arms -- so long as they are set at the same degree; it's somewhat genius and in my eyes semi-revolutionary to this industry. But with this unit, at least if you could just turn the little aircraft landing gear wheel the other way with how it's meant to be used out of the box, it would be a bitter easier to use. Including which wheel is motorized, the structure, the small wheel -- I think they disregarded the effectiveness of the original model. Regardless, it's probably more or less *ok*, but in my eyes there is a larger learning curve with getting your desired results, and I think it's simply way easier and intuitive short and long term to use the original model and coming to know what you're going to get. People say their camera falls over on the 300 as well, and of course, look at it. I think the 300 is even worse because it is 1 wheel drive with 3 other full size wheels. I think whoever designed these two for Neewer missed the aspect of physics as it relates to design, unless I am looking at this all wrong.@@freakytechreviews

If we were to put the neewer gm16 pan head on it would it be too much weight?
@freakytechreviews
@freakytechreviews 7 ай бұрын
That would be extremely dependent on your camera setup. That pan head weighs 1.98lbs, which is almost half of the dolly's max weight capacity. So you would need a very light camera and lens to make it work. Possible? Yes, but limited unfortunately. I wish it had a better payload capacity :/

It’s an amazing camera! Not having a crop factor is a game changer in a small studio space so the camera itself I can’t recommend enough! For the lens, I haven’t had any issues personally from the lens focusing. But I cut out sound for my broll, and use a shotgun mic for my taking head that’s not near the camera itself so I never have to worry about it. I love this lens because it’s 1.8 aperture, a very usable 35mm, AND a macro so the up close shots are awesome. It pairs so well with my r8 that I barely reach for my 100mm macro or my 24-70 2.8

hmmm Neewer makes stuff that's either a super value or absolute trash. you have a light rig there, I'll second the user who asked you to load it up a little heavier, you could make a short or something, would be a good strategy content-wise, too. updates and whatnot will keep ppl coming back and drive users to your older vids, ofc. just a thought! bc i'd possibly be interested, but i'd need to see it w sth like a 135 or a midrange zoom on it. i've got an fx3 i use for smaller stuff but if I'm ltd to super small payloads then its use would be a bit too ltd for me i believe neat tho, for sure i got a Moza Slypod Pro for ~$225, i think they go on sale for 250 relatively regularly, and it's super cool as a monopod/slider sorta thing, and i use it w my RS3 Pro to get some cool shots

Good point! I need to up my short game and this is a good idea to include. I will say that the setup I showed when talking about it’s max payload was an EOS R with SmallRig cage, RF-EF adapter, and Sigma 24-70, bringing the total weight to 4.4lbs. There was no strain from that weight, but the bigger issue is balance. the three wheel design makes it tough to have long and heavy lenses on it so that will be a problem first, before total weight would imo.

So this is a feature a lot of people have ask about and it doesn't have it. However, once you use it you quickly realize that a loop mode wouldn't be that beneficial because if it hits anything to bump the wheels and change the shot, then you wouldn't even realize until in editing. So the camera setup shown in the video when I said that is a Canon EOS R with a SmallRig cage, and RF-EF adapter, and a Sigma 24-70mm lens. This kit weighs in at approximately 4.18lbs, and the dolly handled it really well. I will say that with a lens that long and heavy, the balance is what struggles the most since the dolly only has three wheels. On a perfectly flat surface it did not bog down the motor or cause strain that I could notice. I hope this helps!
