Thank you so much for tuning in! This is the first project I made that was longer in length. It took about a month to make and I learned a lot in the process of creating it.

Wild World and New Horizons are complete opposites. One has the worst graphics and no holidays, but the dialogue is fantastic (for both villagers and special characters) and it introduced a lot of new quirks and features to the series. The other has the best graphics and plenty of holidays, but the dialogue is watered down and a lot of content was removed.
@CatSecurityVideos
@CatSecurityVideos 3 жыл бұрын
I never even thought of it like that! But yeah I 100% agree. I feel like New Horizons does feel like a watered-down Animal Crossing... Even if I really like some of the changes that were for the better (terraforming, moving villager houses, etc.) I sadly think that the groundwork of this entry is too shallow to reasonably fix all of these issues. But I def agree that they seem like complete opposites.
@Arena1999

Wild World is the best in terms of villager interaction, especially the dialogue. A nice balance that doesn't make the villagers overtly critical as they were previously, or saccharine in New Leaf.
@MyUncleWorksForNintendo
@MyUncleWorksForNintendo 3 жыл бұрын
Ugh, the dialog is the worst in this game! Honestly, it's what's ultimately makes me not bother to play the game anymore. I definitely burnt myself out like many others by playing obsessively during the peak of the pandemic in the US, but what keeps me saying "ehh" every time I consider hopping back into the game is the fact that there's no reason to check in on my villagers.... They're all gonna say the same damn things I've heard them say countless times and some of them will say the same things as others too 😭 I played ACNL very extensively as well and don't remember it being so bland and boring to talk to my villagers. The only thing I'd get out of hopping back in is the tedious task of trying to decide where to put A or B for my "perfect" island layout which was SUCH a chore, lol. They need to hire some writers to just add tons of new lines and things *for specific villagers*

@@MyUncleWorksForNintendo I played city folk a lot a few years ago (albeit my memory is not great and I was around 7-10 when I played anyways) and I do remember getting frustrated with a lot of repeat dialogue, but whenever it wasn't a repeat dialogue option I had a lot of fun actually having a *conversation* with my villagers. I was disappointed in new horizons when I realized "conversations" were really short and rarely had you even say anything. I've had times where an Islander asked a question but instead of letting me answer the conversation just ended. The only conversations I remember being able to talk in in nh are ones where two of my villagers were already talking, which is rare and doesn't have much different dialogue, and the one "what is your favorite tea?" one from my normal villager that I get super often. I don't even drink tea.
@MyUncleWorksForNintendo
@MyUncleWorksForNintendo 2 жыл бұрын
@@mat-bu7ms I totally get exactly what you're saying. Yeah, my memory of the older games is hazy, but I definitely remember having actual kinda engaging conversations like you say in the GC game, CF and probably WW too. I think this game they just spent the vast majority of their resources on developing the terraforming features and all that-which I understand-but left dialogue at a low priority. It's really too bad. I LOVE the idea of being able to form the island however I want, but the implementation is so painfully tedious that it's more stressful than anything. I could never decide where to start on something because if I later realize it should be *just one single grid tile over*, I'd have to go through countless hours of tedious break down this wall, build another one, oops the stupid thing picked the wrong square gotta break that one and redo it... And then picking up items, oops inventory is full gotta run off somewhere to drop all my other crap temporarily, then get distracted by countless things along the way - a rare bug, some villager asking for something, Gulliver on the shore, or whatever... For someone with ADHD, this is an absolute nightmare. 😂 When I realized this game was stressing me out instead of letting me relax like previous games, that was when I decided I had to stop playing it. It's really sad what was once my favorite game series now became one that I loathe playing 😥 I really hope they improve this with an update eventually, even if it's a paid expansion. Or at least in the next installment.

In my New Leaf town my villager Willow is truly my best friend. She’s the oldest remaining villager in my town, comes to all the public works projects ceremonies and comes over to my house uninvited when I’m home trying to decorate. Yeah! Initially I was super stoked about New Horizons as a lot of the changes they made were seemingly substantial, but than the lack of a reason to come back slowly pushed me away from it. People say that Animal Crossing is a "Perfect Bubble" kind of game, but there were a lot of things that could go wrong in that universe, whether through your own negligence or in the scenery if you're paying attention to it (Like Tom Nook / Mable and Sable's backstory.) But overall I think I'm holding my breath on the next entry rather than a fix to this one. New Leaf is still probably my favorite entry, but I feel like each game had it's own identity that really stood out and gave it character, without taking away gameplay features. Thanks for watching though, I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed it :)

@@CatSecurityVideos Stole the words right out of my mouth! I was HOOKED to NH when it first came out (in large part due to the pandemic confining me to my home - an experience shared among many players), and it was that same addiction that left me blaming myself when I lost interest. I thought, "well if you hadn't played it so often you probably wouldn't have gotten so tired of it!" Looking back, though, I've realized just how much of the game and its charm is missing from this latest entry, and seeing that sentiment shared amongst other fans has really helped me not feel isolated in thinking this. I don't think it's a BAD game. In fact, it's a really good one! Just, as I said, disappointing, especially when compared to its predecessors. I do agree with you, though. While I want to hold onto hope for this one, a part of me knows that I likely will not get my fix with this entry and will just have to wait until the next one (and in the meantime, as mentioned, play the older ones!) I also agree with this. Each feels like 'the same game just with new features' while also simultaneously having an identity completely its own. New Leaf is also up there as one of my favorites, but I recently started playing Population Growing again (This was my first AC game when I was a kid and though I loved it back then I didn't remember much since I hadn't picked it up in 15+ years), and that one has really gripped me despite its comparative lack of content. I've made it a habit to check on at least a few times a week to see how things are, and I started all the way back in February! That's 4 months (so far!), which is depressingly more than I can say gripped me with NH. Anyway, great video! Nice to hear there are others who have similar opinions to me - feels very validating :)

I don’t get why they even call it new horizons, like we are stuck in one island. New horizons makes me think of visiting new places which we can’t do, I thought after a few times doing label mini game of going to get changed for a set theme, something may come of it like her own shop or room at albles , but no nothing. Leif sells the same things over and over again, why can’t he sell house plants and cute gardening tools etc? And Sahara she could have her own shop too or a desk in nooks cranny instead of that cupboard they have. Nooks cranny, nothing cranny more like they sell the same things over and over I need more stuff and more new stuff. Come on Nintendo this game should be called ‘island decorator’ cause that’s pretty much all we do.

Something I think a lot of people overlook about the original Animal Crossing was that you could *directly* ask villagers if they needed help. I also really liked those big, flat bushes(?) you could walk or run through... and I kind of liked the morning aerobics events that let you work out and dance with villagers. AC:PG had an event where villagers would compete in ball throwing games and stuff too and if that ever came back, you know we would all want to be able to participate ourselves. I might be alone in wanting this, but I've been really wanting to see Mii Masks return too. I much prefer the face of the Mii in my KZfaq avatar over any face or mask I could have in New Horizons. Oh, and speaking of appearances, I've been wanting to play as an animal.. in *Animal* Crossing... for ages... :'C

See, I can understand how initially there would be no post office or police station on your island, considering you're starting off on a remote island (that somehow already has an airport) and building a community from the ground up, but that would've been the perfect opportunity to add more additions to the town than just the shops and museum; maybe you could build the post office and police station in a similar way- maybe after sending enough letters the dodos realize the island needs a dedicated postal service and that's how the post office is built, or if you return enough lost items or buy too much fake artwork from Redd, the police can come to your island. It's perfectly logical that the game wouldn't start with these things on your island, but it would've been a really cool feature to add as your island grows.

Came across this by chance and wow wow wow I agree on everything here. If I could only pick one, I would want them to fix the villagers. I know the series has to change to keep up with the times, but they really dropped the ball when they decided to get rid of the charm that the villagers had. I fell in love with the series because I felt like my presence mattered to them. I don't see any reason that villagers can't be how they were in New Leaf or Wild World. Did they really think we wouldn't want to have new decorating mechanics AND interesting villagers? but adding in Tortimer's Island would be good too

I REALLY miss all of the weird little things your villagers can get up to. The sports fair is really quirky, but I also loved that villagers could go to the main street once they leave your town in New Leaf. But yeah, personality-wise, I do think having more varied personality types is where I want the series to somewhat be heading back to. They def seemed like they had a lot more going on in their lives in earlier games; and occasionally a lot less patience for you because of that, which is fair. I feel like SOMETIMES I've seen them get upset after a conversation with another villager, but I feel like there were ways in previous games where you could accidentally (or intentionally) upset them. I enjoyed villagers saying mean things. We say mean things about villagers all the time, so it only makes sense. It made it more enjoyable to have villagers you disliked. In New Horizons, you can bad mouth a villager and they're like "eVeRyThInG iS aWeSoMe!"

The diary is the one thing I can't wrap my head around them removing. It was so useful to be able to see when there would be town events, and you could track the days you'd been playing. On top of that you could make personal notes of when NPCs visited your town -- even in advance since Copper sometimes told you a few days before they arrived. It was so good!!

Very well made and- having only played new leaf and HHD up until new horizons, I had no idea there was so much to offer in previous entries of the game! I do for sure remember every time i opened up new leaf, it felt like there was a lot to do- instantly 3 villagers asking something of me, hours of fun on the island w/ friends, etc. ACNH felt like even more of a decoration game than ever- and although it might be wishful thinking with where nintendo's at, I'm hoping the new updates can help make the game more engaging. Anyway- really good video, I loved to hear what you had to say!

This video was nice! The thought of ball-physics being unleashed on NH is funny though, it'd get stuck on everything! lmao I think there's a disconnect in the audience for ACNH, as New Horizons gives you an island you can terraform and decorate to the tippy tops but feels sorely lacking in the "social sim" aspect. The animals are repetitive, your daily chores are repetitive, you're likely seeing the same items in stores and don't have much incentive to play other than event-wise (which is lacking too, sadly!). And if you've decorated your island a lot you can't do much else, either wiping the slate clean or trying to restructure things to accommodate new things (either by the player or via updates). People want less limits on the creative aspects but also still want things to interact with and the game isn't meeting those expectations, so both groups in their audience feel disappointed. I think the first section of the game was done so well, you had goals to work towards and now it's feeling very aimless because we don't know what to expect out of it. Is the store ever going to get bigger? Who knows! Will you need to part with your exterior island decor to make room for new events or buildings? We also don't know! I remember being very sad having to make space for snowpeople bc I'd spent a lot of time making cool outdoor seating areas, so I was a seasalty ice lolly about that - and I think it's gonna be an ongoing frustration sadly. It'd be cool if there were separate islands near your own that were able to be explored, like a commerce isle you could visit. Could have those shops built by handing over materials to Nook, helping customize the interior and exterior... Could also have a free-space area available to the player to decorate which isn't directly linked to the shops. Maybe Joan has a shop stall you can access for most of the day on Sundays if you buy enough turnips? It could be open into the afternoon as a reward for being a turnip customer. I could also see Kap'n's family living there, maybe they buy dive-specific creatures from you for a higher price than the store? Along with Retail maybe having a gemstone-specific crafting option, K.K musicboxes and gyroids - maybe just maybe, Cyrus will craft a random Gyroid out of clay! And Redd might have a secret store there you can enter if you've met him and bought something from his trawler. Maybe you could even see Kicks or Leif at the island sometimes with a pop-up shop stall if they're not on your island yet or aren't the daily-visitor. And that's not even to get started on the concept of an island paradise where NPCs like Flick and CJ might live that the player can visit to find warm-season bugs and fish like Tortimer Island. Think about how cool their house could be (I say house because iirc they are roomates)! An odd mix of bugs and fish and decor themed around their specific styles would be amazing. But, ah... Honestly there's so much they could be doing with this game than the sad drip-feed of events and "new stuff", it really sours the experience. The game is beautiful, it has some awkward lag and pop-in but it's visually lovely and I really want to enjoy it more! But I'm a mix of disappointed and frustrated with it, some cases just minor nitpicks piling up and others just wondering where half of the furniture items are. I've been very rambly here but I just... I got all these items and want to play the game but it's so very full yet empty at the same time.

When you were going through the list of each thing you want to be brought back from old games, it brought me a lot of nostalgia and shock. I've grown up playing all the AC games but was only 5 years old when Wild World came out. That being said, I remember playing WW & PG but I didn't remember all the features from them. When you brought up the UFOs and little details like that, I was completely surprised as to how I could've forgotten such things. Guess it's been a while since I've played either games ;0; Anyways, this was a really well organized and detailed video and I agree with you about all the things that are a necessity to NH. Right now I'm living out of the country so I only have my switch with me, but whenever I visit home I ALWAYS play the other games, especially PG. NH just isn't cutting it for me, especially on days when I'm homesick and nostalgic...

I 200% agree with all of this! I really hope we get more updates, but I'm not holding my breath after E3... I think the easiest way to incorporate things mentioned (IMO at least) would be an abandoned "resort" island you could donate to fix up, open shops, or things like that. It would have characters like Katrina, Pelly, or Tortimer rotating through each day in a "town square" (with random villagers roaming around like in the city of CF), and shops like a Cafe, auction, or even one for Gracie that you could completely customize inside and out. That's just my opinion of the easiest way to implement some of the "bigger" things people want 😁

2 minutes in and I completely agree. I will watch the whole video, but right off the bat, I know I share the same feelings. ACNH has the greatest graphics and most extensive level of customization, but lost so much of the magic. For a long time I wondered if this was just due to nostalgia factor and me being an adult now who's played since the GC days, but this video is reminding me of the specific things that are missing - the weird, little things. ACNH is missing so much of it. I also just feel like the soundtrack is way less interesting than previous games, which is a big thing for me. Wish they'd make a DLC that let you choose from previous soundtracks! I'd probably go back to playing the game again for that.

You know how they have that "free content" screen? If they do have paid content- I think adding in something along these lines would be PERFECT: -Kapp'n appears one day, in a boat, to the left of the airport dock. He tells you Tortemer wants to talk to you. You get boated out to a happy home designer esc island and he explains he's retired, but heard how well you did with building up your island and wants you to renovate some run down buildings that are already on the island. -You get a school, restaurant, and a hospital. This is where you can find villagers that aren't on your island, similarly to the city folk plaza, and if you want, you could roleplay or something. You go and there are random animals assigned to roles and the host can choose to demote or promote people. You make the layouts, just like in HHD, and then for a while you can just spend time putting items around the plaza but with a certain place, as later updates will come where you can add other npcs to the plaza itself. -After that, you start getting requests from previous npcs, like Shrink, Brewster, and Harriet. In these, there's one floor that's planned out already, and one you get to customize. The shrink's set floor is the basement, Brewster's is floor one, and Harriet's is floor two. They're all like "wow you're doing all this soooo good can you make me a little shop here? it'd just be soo good for buisness :)" Harriet maybe does more than hair,, maybe she sells really specific makeup and hairstyles and items? i want her in because at one point you see her and Harvey talking a few times and the next time Reese and Cyrus plan their wedding photos they're like "oh we already took them with Harvery- sorry! Today's actually about another couple!" BIG REVEAL ITS HARRIET AND HARVEY. BOOM. that'd be really cute for a wedding event tbh sksksks -etc etc, and eventually you have a nice little plaza on this island made for shopping and even big names like Gracie Grace want in, boom, content! Maybe you add apartments where you can semi-have animals, like they act as residents but are only available on the island and are often just seen shopping, but they can leave at any time without warning. maybe they'll recognize you if they come back too! You can ask them if you get to the highest friendship to move to your island! And also, it's harder to get friendship in the next update, but they make a new reward: They'll invite you over sometimes! and sometimes they'll ask if you like it, and you have an option to redecorate! Also bring back the event where they'd go to your house on certain days and be like "wow i love your furnature! i'll buy it!" and you could do the same to them cuz that was SO FUN

You gave me an idea about Harv's island in NH. Instead of decorating Harv's house, his island could've been fully fleshed out and have a city area inspired by Happy Home Designer. You could decorate the buildings and give them your own twist. The villagers would occasionally talk about what they did in the city. Especially since they put emphasis on designing in NH, I think this was a big missed opportunity.

It’s evident that New Horizons was not ready for release at the time it was released. The game was incomplete but Nintendo was feeling the pressure to publish the next AC game for Switch and when the global lockdowns were in order they saw an amazing opportunity for sales for this type of game. I think they had intention to keep with updates to help hide the fact the game wasn’t ready but it’s Obvious they made their sales/money and they figure “why work harder than we need to”. Especially the lack of post office?? That seemed very odd.

These are kind of like small editing projects to get more comfortable with it. I'm currently in College for Video/Movie Design and Production so my time is kind of split when it comes between prepping for that and video making. Some of the other topics I eventually want to talk about is something related to Danganronpa, The Sims, The magic of the 6th generation of consoles.
