Hi, a question. if a have this frase : " it was descovered by ...." the verb to be "was" would be a function word? it isnot a principal verb on this frase doesnt it? it is an auxiliar verb and a function word? thanks

"this" is a demonstrative as well as article . So why can't we consider it as a function word . I saw few examples with " this " as a function word . Please help me Iam having exam day after tomorrow 😩😫
