Welcome back for part 5 of my continental divide trail thru-hike. After arriving in Grants, New Mexico we learned all the national forests in the state would be closing within the next week, but we still had enough time to walk to Cuba, NM, so that’s what we did. Shortly after climbing Mt.Taylor or Tsoodzil, we were out of the national forests and in the clear on the CDT until we reached Cuba. This section is still difficult for me in many aspects but between celebrating a birthday on trail and being surrounded by some superb hiker trash, I end this section feeling ready to take on the Continental Divide Trail in Colorado (once we let a little snow melt).

Beautiful Mesas , nice stretch. Hope that’s not a thing hiking a mile for every year you are, 70 miles would be a bit rough. You did a great job , 23 miles &+ daily.

you’re not a thru hiker until you rip a chunk of skin off of your body with leukotape, creating an injury that is worse than the one you were covering in the first place. nice video!

Those sandstone features are such an underrated part of the trail. I did a flip flop starting in Grants, so this segment was my first. That day from Grants to the water trough is as rough as you described!

They were one of the highlights of New Mexico for me! I’m glad it felt accurate - we should have planned better too 🙃

loving watching the series, really inspiring and amazing how much content you managed to capture *and* then have good recall for it when doing your narration down the line. One q, I know you have done the PCT and CDT, if you could do only one which would you do? I love mountains and seeing raw beauty, but I do also enjoy company and community. as an international hiker it's unlikely I'll ever find the time to do both, so tough to pick! leaning toward PCT but CDT also seems a bit more wild and beautiful?

thank you so much!! I kept a journal which helped tremendously with recall later on. I honestly would probably steer you toward the PCT for what you are describing. There's tons of beauty there and lots of community, whereas the CDT is still new and growing so you can end up with a lot of people around if you are lucky, but I think it's a lot more rare. I do think they are both beautiful, so you really can't go wrong. PCT Is more fun (although still hard), CDT is more brutal (although still fun).

@eliseott thanks for the reply! I think I'll take your advice and do the PCT. Its the first trail to capture my attention. I just hope I'm able to get the B2 visa 😅

Actually, lots of people watch hiking videos for a variety of reasons. Do many thru hikers hike from the international border to NM/CO border early while the desert is relatively cool snd then take a longer break while the snow melts some in the San Juans? Seems like doing so would lessen some the potential difficulties with the heat. Sante Fe is a nice city. I really enjoyed the historic downtown part of the city. For what it's worth, I use a piece of Telfa pad cut to size to overlay the blister or hotspot so that the Leukotape can't pull the skin off when you need to change the dressing.

I think most people start with the goal of getting through the desert early-ish before it's too hot and then still getting to Colorado at a reasonable enough time, we got to the San Juans particularly early because of the forest closures. I think if you waited too long though you'd run into a time crunch further north - seems to be a luck of the draw on the kind of year you get weather wise. I really enjoyed Santa Fe as well! and yes we usually use gauze but I think he missed and accidentally had luekotape straight on the blister.
