Sounds Awesome... Lots of smoke,,,, This was it's first run for many years. 9 Cylinder 400bhp Supercharged Aircraft engine.... These were also fitted to many WW2 tanks and Self Propelled Guns.... Built around 1943 this one came from the Greek army reserve ! and this is its first proper run in Bromsgrove, England !! ... which was later fitted into a Range Wreck M3 General Lee Grant tank. Compared to so many bigger tanks, the m3 looks like a puny little tank. But god damn it, the roar of this thing gives me chills, i'd shit my pants even if a RC car came towards my direction in the battlefield making this noise.

@Phocusali Agreed, it sounds and looks like there are some stuck rings as well as very worn valve guides (poor old girl)..

No, they smoke like that because the bottom cylinders fill with oil when they sit. The guys in the tank crews used to have to get out, sometimes under fire, and roll them backwards to clear them out. It was not a popular engine in tanks.

Is this a compression problem? I've seen deisel engines sending out little soft pops of dirty smoke like this. It's a sad old looking engine. I cant help feeling it needs a top end rebuild and a rebore, and the timing sorting out, rather than revving the nuts right out of it.

All aluminum moreover... now it's a luxury item on a car.... But smarter i don't think. diesel was quicker, cheaper to produce and less problematic on cold weather conditions. Us always have been gas users ,even now. it's just cultural for both Americans and Russians

Sorry, but the radials fitted to armored vehicles were not supercharged. (I don't know if aircraft radials were or not.)

+Wayne Spinaci Aircraft radials were supercharged for high altitude use.

These absolutely were supercharged, most radials are/were because the supercharger evens out the fuel distribution, which is very poor in radials when no supercharger is fitted.
