Listen carefully from around 6:10. During the Kargil War, we had moved our troops from Pangong Tso to Kargil in order to reinforce our strength at the war front. When our troops returned to Pangong Tso, they found that the Chinese had moved in. Since then, both sides used to patrol some stretch of land. Now, that is no more being permitted, and we are out. I don't think this had ever been reported.

A brilliant discussion. The questions were incisive with very little emotionalism. Mr Shyam Saran came across as being knowledgeable, objective, balanced, analytical, comprehensive and scholarly. I wonder with capable men like him in the policy/decision making process how has India chosen to becomes an arrogant and aggressive state whose neighbours may be afraid of its economic and military power but have little respect for it.

It was criminal negligence on the part of Pradhan Chawkidar Modi, who gave NOC to China that Chinese neither intruded nor they are inside !! It's a classic case of intelligence failure & responsibilities to be fixed. The action of China is tactical by which they have engaged our forces to a very long border right from Arunachal up to Kashmir which is disadvantageous especially when economy has plunged nose dive & Kashmir on broil & also developments in Afghanistan.

Why do we not discuss about Chinese strength and technical advantage over us in field of Electronics, Cyber, Space and Rocket warfare and above all the man management, governance, Infrastructure and military industrial complex. There is a paradigm shift in the way warfare used to happen in 19 and 20th century, we are still in that archaic era while china has moved to the 21st century. They will cripple our logistics first and only then will engage us directly. Example Gulf War .. USA vs IRAQ .. We should acknowledge the reality and correct our ways which include thinking and preparing accordingly.

This notion that the PM was poorly advised before making his statement about "koi hamare seema meh ghussa nahin hai" is false. It is entirely congruent with his personality to avoid probing scrutiny. He has kept the media at bay from day 1, choosing instead to make statements through social media, he rarely sits down for 1-on-1 interviews. When Karan himself interviewed him over Gujrat riots, he ended the interview after 6 minutes. He's quite happy to simply deny and divert attention.

All said and done, the Chinese intrusion is not significant even for them. Ladakh episode is more of a message to India. Chinese strategists consider that when they were trying to improve gravely deteriorating bilateral ties with US triggered by Covid-19 pandemic, the road construction by India near disputed territory in Ladakh was seen as an attempt to stab China in the back while it was busy tackling the US. China wants to send a message that the Chinese have no problem with India, but they have a problem with Modi’s China strategy. China wants to make territorial nationalism unusable as an electoral agenda for Modi by changing the status quo along the Sino-Indian border right before the 2024 general election. China is in no hurry to settle the border dispute with India, as it sees the situation as hanging an albatross on Modi's neck.

India was/is always obsessed with Pakistan since independence and never took Chinese threat seriously. Not sure if Modi is brave enough to fight China militarily because of a psychological fear of losing to China once again as happened in 1962. Based on all politicians and ex military leaders there is a perception that vast power differential exists between the two countries and therefore resigned to the fact of pursuing useless diplomatic talks and imposing insignificant economic costs. The ongoing diplomatic talks are farcical and will not help achieve status quo ante. India has to live with the embarrassment for the foreseeable future with the new Line of Actual Control.

Even after retirement from the service, the former FS Shyam Saran ji is evasive, equivocal and escapist in answering the questions which he as an expert with vast experience in the background should have called a spade a spade...
