Episode 103
Contra Force is the third Contra game on the NES, but this is a spin-off of the main series. While it may look like Contra at a glance, it's actually much different, and didn't even start out as a Contra game!
The story of Contra force is certainly an interesting one, and today the game has become quite the curiosity. Contra Force may be the black sheep of the franchise, but its rare NES cartridge sells for top dollar on eBay!
So how did this game get made, and what stopped it from officially being titled Contra 3? In today's episode we'll find out, and then we'll dive deep into the gameplay where we'll learn:

I love seeing you do playthroughs of the more 'forgotten' games for the NES and SNES, there are just so many games like Contra Force that deserve more in depth coverage like this and its nice to see someone do it well.

I BARELY even remember this game. Barely. I think I would have really enjoyed it if I paid it more attention. It came out so late in the NES lifespan.

My dog was never this good at Contra, that's one good boy you've got there. Just be careful, if he learns how to put the cartridge in by himself then you'll be out of a job.

23:00 As someone working in construction, let me just say how frustrating it is to have our manhoists explode every time they arrive at the top floor. They're so expensive and time consuming to replace every time we need to lift materials up the building. You'd think someone would have figured out by now how to design a model that doesn't require a case of TNT strapped to the bottom.

So... my wife has the real RA (Rheumatoid Arthritis) and she also has a sense of humor. We watch you as we wake up on the weekends =). She turns to me and says "I knew I should have gotten the homing missiles last!" And I almost lost my coffee.

I love this game. One of the few NES games that I was actually able to beat as a kid, and this made me love it even more.

This game is by far more entertaining that original NES contra. I always prefer this, since unlike true Contra games this is beatable by average player and it actually feels like an adventure. My favorite episode was when player has to walk from one plane wing to other. Years later I was genuinely surprised finding out people picking on this game. It's only flaw(?) is in the name, otherwise it would be in top 50 NES games for sure.

This is a great game. It gives a horrible first impression, but when get into it, it gets real intense. It’s hard as balls, but fairly so. It’s not like the other Contra games where you have to know what’s coming before it’s coming. You can get through the game without losing too many lives if you play smart. One of the few Raspberry pi NES games I picked up in the last year and was swept away by.

Hearing the explanation of the DNME name for the bad guys you fight in this game reminds me that this isn't even the only example of Konami doing things like this in their NES manuals as a joke or whatever they were thinking. Metal Gear's manual gives us some weird backstory on a Colonel Vermon CaTaffy, and in Snake's Revenge the manual says the bad guy's leader is Higharolla Kockamamie, even though the real villain of both games was Big Boss.

Since you mentioned the Metal Gear manual I have to bring up the fact that they included a map of outer haven along with the manual. Why do I mention that when alot of old games included a map. Well spoiler alert...... The final boss ends up being the leader of Fox Hound so the map they give you is fake. It leads you in all the wrong directions and in some cases directly into traps. It's such a cool idea.

I remember as a kid, Nintendo power had a spread on this game and they made I sound so cool. I remember beans sounding like he would be so much fun to play as. But then when I rented the game, I didn't have very much fun because, being a young kid, I didn't really understand how to play the game effectively and when it was time to return the game, I walked away thinking that contra force sucked. I'm sure I'm not the only one who had this experience.

I love your channel and it’s a great watch for old school gameplay and hints. On a separate note, it is also an amazing help for putting me to sleep. I don’t get it but the combination of your steady voice and 8 bit music does a ASMR that knocks me out. Challenging to enjoy the longer videos is one shot but just means I enjoy it over multiple watches!

I got this game as a kid and played the shit out of it. I never got Contra, but had Super C and both of these games were the toughest and I loved them. Thanks for covering this!

Love your videos. Wondering if you will ever tackle 7th Saga? As far as I can remember it is the only RPG that ever left me stuck as a kid, no matter which character I picked. I'd love to see a UCBVG on it for even just a single character (even though I have a feeling you'd give us each one).

It was a challenging game. I think that there was a bit of a random seed with the opponents/companions, because I remember people being someplace on one play through but not another. I did beat it with certain characters, but others seemed virtually unusable.

@@drhumupower8570 yea, all of the characters could also be encountered in game. You would run in to different people at different places, and they would have different reactions depending on who you used.

That game is basically broken. When you face your rivals it scales depending on your level and essentially becomes impossible. I've gone through those battles with save states and even then it takes so long I end up just giving up on it. I still have the original cart of that. Never beat it. I've tried several times over the years. I guess it needs a rebalance patch. I think the difficulty on the normal battles is fine but those hero battles are really dumb.

@@anonamatron I've heard it can be done with the knight character (green dude) who is also supposed to be the easiest character to use. I always tried with the demon (antenna guy) and got killed by the robot when you have to fight him.

I beat this game as a young kid and i was coomletely bad at it. The reason i was able to beat it was that i found a secret bug or glitch that made me have infinite lives. I remember going back and forth between the game and the character select menu, if i did it long enough or switched characters enough then eventually the character menu screen glitched up and suddenly i would revive whenever i died, this let me beat it without needing strategies. The only thing is that i had to be careful of was to not jump off from the airplane wings cuz i would just respwan in the middle of the open air constantly soft locking me. I had a similar bug in a 90s jrpg legends of the ancient dragon where i could go in the item menu and keep scrolling up and down the item menu until it bugged out and i could scroll down way past my initial inventory giving me access to shop menus with infinite health for free. I dunno how i kept breaking games just by glitching the menus.

Honestly I can't wait to see a video from ycbvg that gives tips for Contra Hard Corps on the Genesis because it's brutal in difficulty. I haven't made it past level one in my few attempts at it.

Play the Japanese version, and maybe a English fan translation if you want to know the story. For some reason Japan for once had the easier game as you have an hp bar, it is 3 hits and you die instead of 1 (and it fully recovers if you beat the level).

@@frozenburst6463 yeah I have both on my Genesis mini. The reason most japanese ports are easier if because in Japan you can't rent games only buy them because of their copywrite laws. So they cranked up the difficulty in countries that had rentals so you couldn't beat it in a weekend.

I never played this as I was in the Super Nintendo mode by then and Megaman 6 was my exit ticket to the old NES. But this was also up there with a great exit for the NES. Great series.

I remember playing this game as a kid. I tought that the slowdowns are cool slo mo effect. Has its flaws but the music is incredible in my opinion, the first cutscene, the second level theme and so on. It felt impossible back in the day, and i can't believe that i made it near the final level. The airplane boss is the farthest i went. Also, the glitches would have been dark magic if i knew them as a kid. Skiping a hard level was just a dream back then. Well, time to try it again! :D Thanks for the video.

I actually managed to finally beat this one a few months ago I had to play solo but changing characters every time I was about to run out of lives... It was the only way for me to beat it Definitely prefer the other 2 NES contras and specially Contra 3 on SNES

love it, and it seems a lot of these fellows went on to inspire metal slug characters and bosses, the gunship inspired the final boss of the arabian mission on Mslug2, and the crazy gunner guy along with the final boss seem to have inspired our favourite machine gun ona-man-army Adam O'neil, while Beans inspired Trevor for Mslug5, also if you played contra: shattered soldier, the 2nd player character revealed his last name to be Beans, right before he turned into a wacky boss so it isn't completely forgotten, I wonder what would have been of a full saga with the Arc-hounds.

Odd choice going with this one for a playthrough, i always thought this game was just a weird hack with the Contra name slapped to it for attention, i never knew this was actually released back in the day, i certainly never saw it as a kid, this is another reason i love your intros, they're very informative.

I loved this game as a kid, the music, the bosses and the airplane level are awesome. Never understood why the game received such a bad reception, sure, it doesn't compete with the best of the nes catalog, but it is a solid game.
