CONTRA on the Nintendo Entertainment System was a very different beast compared to Konami's arcade original, including the music. Purists are torn, but most people were introduced to the game in the comfort of their living room via the NES port. Part of the memorable qualities that made CONTRA such a hit was the amazing music, which went above and beyond to push the limitations of the 8-Bit sound hardware at a time when music in video games was considered somewhat superfluous.
For this project, I stripped out all the layers of the song and ran them through a proper regimen of EQing, balancing and mastering. I've also added stereo effects to certain elements of each song - tastefully - so as not to take too many liberties with the existing source material. The objective was to widen out the sound palette and create a more engaging and rousing score.
