Just a quick note on this episode: We actually had a section in this episode about the Retro Receiver from 8bitdo that allows you to use bluetooth controllers on your NES. Since that would have made this episode nearly 40 minutes, which lets face it -- is way too long for a video about controller adapters. It's also fairly new product that people might be interested in watching a video about we decided to split that segment into its own episode which we'll release next week.

I don't get the obsession with wireless controllers. Batteries die and you need a cord to charge them anyway. I wish all modern consoles would have corded controller options.
@GamerOutdated
@GamerOutdated 8 жыл бұрын
They have :P you just plug the usb cable and bang wired! I personally like wireless controllers simply because prevent people around my house from trip over the cord, another great advantage it's the fact that you don't need to replace the controller if the cable is broken. But i do think wired controllers do still have their place on the market, specially for competitive gaming (fighting games ect)

I don't see anyone else below mentioning it, so thought I would. The Xbox 360's Play & Charge kit does not allow actually using the controller as a wired one, it's literally just for power.

@SmaMan
@SmaMan 7 жыл бұрын
The mode button is not really an input button though. It was purely there to switch the 6-button controller into 3-button mode for certain games that were incompatible with it. (Like Forgotten Worlds and Golden Axe II.) I don't imagine the Genesis adapter would even register that button press.

Agreed... I was watching this, hoping to find that some low-profile seller had an adaptor for play on a PS2 or original XBox. With an extended hard drive and CoinOps on an XBox, all it's waiting for is a decent D-pad and six-button layout! :-/
@ReigningSemtex
@ReigningSemtex 8 жыл бұрын
+Ruaidhri O'Baoill your right there's no cheap and easy way to do that I have thought about doing that recently, ps2 to xbox adapters were readily available so I ended up using a wireless ps2 controller for coinops with some success but I really want to use my Saturn controller. I think the only way to do it is by daisy chaining a couple of adapters (and I worry about the response times) I have a Saturn to dreamcast adapter so all I need is a dreamcast to xbox adapter and I can hopefully get this glorious 6 button controller working with some quality arcade games 😊
@Lakster37
@Lakster37 8 жыл бұрын
Look up one of Adam Koralik's videos. He got a Dreamcast -> Xbox set-up working (I think he ended up daisy chaining through a PS2 adapter), though the adapters he used are rather expensive. Also, you might see with Raphnet if there would be some way to get his Saturn -> USB to work with the original Xbox. From my understanding, it's controller port is just a modified version of USB, so it might be able to.
@ReigningSemtex
@ReigningSemtex 8 жыл бұрын
+Lakster37 thank you. I have watched quite a few of Adams uploads but hadn't seen the one you mentioned so I'll have a look. I had wondered that myself because I recently bought a mayflash Saturn to usb adapter (for gpd xd) and I remember you could make an adapter to use usb drives on the original xbox I just wasn't sure it would work with controllers. If this works it would be so freaking cool
@Fattydeposit

The Saturn controllers are all wonderful. Ultimately the Snes school of button placement became the standard but the 2nd gen Saturn pad - with its smooth as butter ergonomics, ultra low weight, 6 main face buttons AND Snes-type shoulder buttons - was always my favourite. The 'claw technique' gets a bad rap but many technical action games would have to be dumbed down to be playable on today's default controllers. Alien Soldier on a SNES or PS1 pad? Good luck trying to exert half as much control finesse without three lined-up face buttons resting naturally under three perfectly aligned finger tips. A claw hander will wipe the floor with you any day.

If i remember correctly the reason for Wii U Pro Controller and the Play and charge Xbox 360 kit not working with the usb adapter is simply cause the usb connections for thoose 2 is charging only and not giving any kind of data connection to the console
@Lakster37
@Lakster37 8 жыл бұрын
I can't speak for 360 play and charge, but that's definitely right for Wii U Pro. It's connection is only through bluetooth, and USB is just for charging.

I'd like to say that the Raphnet N64 controller adapter is almost if not completely perfect in everything I've thrown at it. Everyone who reviews the Hori Pad Mini neglects to mention that it's pretty bad for shooting games as the stick is too sensitive to aim properly but with the raphnet adapter everything works like a charm in Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, and any other games! I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a good alternative to the original controller who liked the GCN controller like I did! @mylifeingaming
@mylifeingaming 8 жыл бұрын
[Try4ce] I really like the Wii U Pro Controller. I wouldn't use it for 2D games much though, because of the Dpad location (which is OK, just not as good as other options). Though to be honest, when given the option to use the GamePad, I tend to do that. I enjoy the screen, and find it pretty much just as comfortable as the Pro Controller. The only issue with the GamePad is that sometimes it can feel like a longer reach from the face buttons to the right stick. I prefer sticks to be on the same level, like on Wii U and DualShocks, rather than the staggered sticks like on Xbox (which is OK, but I do prefer even sticks). Overall I really like the Pro Controller, but I personally don't feel like it's much better than the GamePad or anything (sacrificing the screen functionality is too much, I think!).

That's so wild, maybe cause it was my first real system growing up that I owned, but I am of the opposite opinion. I love the N64 controller. Yes, the D-Pad is situated in such a way that you have to choose between the joystick and it when holding it, but I actually can't even think of a game off the top of my head that required you to use both. And that suited me just fine, because the joystick was perfect for just about all of the games you would want to play. I've heard more people prefer the GameCube controller, something that I will never understand, but to each their own I guess!

Someone's probably already noted this, but if you want twin stick controls in Goldeneye and Perfect dark, just use two controllers. No, really - it splits look/strafe/move between the two sticks, in a very 'modern' fashion, across the two controllers. It works....really, *really* well. Control styles 2.x, as I recall.

The raphnet snes-2-gamecube and classic-controller-to-gamecube adapters are a great alternative for people who don't have a hori pad. They also have a gamecube-2-classic-controller adaptor if you have a hori pad and wanted to lord it over people by using it on the snes classic.

I got the 'SNES controller to Wiimote adapter' from Raphnet-tech and it is AMAZING! It lets me not only use an SNES controller on my wiiU with any game that accepts the original wii pro controller, but it also lets you set the thumbpad to register as the left analog stick for games that otherwise wouldn't have let you do that. I can play the newest Smash Bros with the thumbpad and that's exactly what I bought it for. I know several people will call this sacrilege, but I hate it when games play in 2D but only allow you to use analog sticks, and Smash is one of those games for me. This adaptor fixed this and I couldn't be happier. Also it's pretty cool to be able to play nearly all my new/modern wiiU games with an SNES controller.

N64 camera controls are not inverted. It's the nomenclature that changed. Before 2000, camera control literally meant you were controlling the camera. Now, it's generally understood to mean controlling your perspective. What does it matter? We used to distinguish between 1st and 3rd person games. In a first person game the camera is your avatar's eyes. C-left (or equivalent) therefore moves your perspective to the left. In a third person game the camera is floating behind the avatar. C-left (or equivalent) therefore moves your perspective to the right. Because if the camera itself, floating behind you, were to move to the left, the line between the camera and your avatar would angle to the right. Obviously most (younger) console gamers were not familiar with the distinction. Hence, Mario 64 introduced camera controls by quite literally SHOWING you the camera behind you. If the Lakitu moved over Mario's right shoulder, of course he'd see what was to Mario's left. Eventually 3rd person games which were not flight simulators* became main stream, and using a direction to control the perspective became the norm. So even though the norm was (and is) technically inverted, in the strictest sense, the nomenclature flipped. Now inverted means the axis moves opposite the norm, rather than the axis moves the camera in the opposite direction. (Again, generally understood to mean perspective control) *- Flight simulators were, believe it or not, once upon a time the most popular 3rd person 3d games. There, the x axis was inverted and the y was not, again in the strictest sense and in the way we used to use the terms. After all, pulling back on the stick should make a plane go up, right? For PC games this was the established norm until 2004, when World of Warcraft switched what "invert y" meant, in a similar move to cater to young/casual/uninformed gamers. That game had such a far reach, that this direction = perspective idea became the norm everywhere within a year or two.

+None17555 I know, I have a lot of feelings on this topic too. What made me decide to get used to modern defaults is games like inFamous and Uncharted. I couldn't make my brain seamlessly switch between traditional third person camera controls and aiming shooting controls at the same time. Opposing inversions for those two functions in third person just doesn't work, I think. I went into accepting the modern norms kicking and screaming, but I'm overall glad I did it.

This video practically committed a crime by not mentioning how the Sega Saturn pad was, and still IS the definitive pad for fighting games. Just because you guys don't play them often, there's millions of players who do play fighters everyday. I would've expected a more inclusive presentation outside of your own biases or preferences towards certain game genres.

Daisy Chaining adapters can have great results. Want to use a wireless PS3 or PS4 controller on your GameCube or Wii? Get a Gemini/Game Elements PS2 to Xbox/GameCube adapter, and plug a Brook PS3/PS4 to PS2 adapter into it, and voila! Works fantastic and there is, no noticeable lag, even with two adapters joined together. The sensitivity and precision of Sony's analog sticks always felt a tad better than Nintendo or Microsoft, to me.

I've been using the Raphnet N64 -> Gamecube adapter for a few weeks now and it's worked great, but with a minor hiccup. I've noticed I cannot be too far out of the line of sight with my Wavebird otherwise it starts to read the input incorrectly. This isn't a problem with the actual Gamecube or the adapter for the Wii u, but for whatever reason it exists with this adapter. The wired controllers of course work perfectly and I have no problem using them, but the convenience of a sophisticated wireless controller for the N64 is optimal. Anyways great video as always. I'm glad you guys are getting these things out in the open so that people can get them and have great alternatives to the original controllers.

[Try4ce] Huh, I haven't had that problem when using my Wavebird, but you may have tried it for longer stretches than I have. This was actually the first time I'd used my Wavebird in probably 10 years. I stopped using it because I was getting interference of some kind, resulting in hiccups. It was really neat using it again, and I actually didn't have any problems this time.

I remember seeing the first Playstation to PC USB converter back in 2001, and I bought it immediately. They weren't in widespread distribution, so I had to get them from some Hong Kong website. I have worn out, lost, or damaged a few over time, but I still like using them. Also, there are so many barely used Dualshock controllers at a low price.

Have you guys (more likely: Coury) ever had an opportunity to try the MC Cthulhu PCB that allows you to add multi-console functionality to a controller/arcade stick? I purchased one a while ago to install in my 360 arcade stick, and I bought extra cables to allow me to connect to SNES/PS1/Saturn/DC/OG Xbox. I'm very happy with it so far.

This video brings up a topic that I'm sure many of us have had, or shall I say...felt. That is, how using a controller that wasn't originally in mind for use during the games development, tends to bug me big time. Such as using a SNES controller on a Genesis, or reverse. There is just something about having the matching feeling of a controller with that system...especially when it comes to more retro systems where games tended to be exclusive to that console. I'm surprised that no one has made a video discussing this and going further into why people feel that way...minus nostalgia, even when the switched controller functions just fine in a technical sense.

There was one alternative controller option that I'm surprised you didn't mention. Perhaps the only option that allows you to use official hardware without any need for fan made adapters and amazingly is made by the manufacturer of the console in question. Under normal circumstances I wouldn't recommend updating the PlayStation TV above firmware 3.52, because I value the Whitelist hack. Personally, I have two units. One for blacklisted games and one for anything that requires 3.55 or higher. Apparently, the PSTV offers a workaround for those who don't like the Dual Shock 4 and want to play PS4 games with a Dual Shock 3 controller. If the PS4 game supports Remote Play, you can stream it to your PSTV using the microconsole's Remote Play app and play your PS4 games using a Dual Shock 3 that you synced to the PSTV. Again, I don't normally recommend updating your PSTV above 3.52, because on the higher firmware you can't install the whitelist hack. And of course, it's not a perfect option as there are some games that require the PS4 touchpad. But for the most part, it should be a convenient and inexpensive option for those wanting to play PS4 with a PS3 controller.

You mentioned the N64 replacement stick that you used in another episode (which I also watched). I've read a couple of comments saying that later revisions of the RepairBox GameCube style sticks have supposedly addressed some of the issues earlier revisions and other GameCube style sticks have. I was hoping you guys might take a look at it one day. I'm kind of interested in importing a NTSC N64 and modding it for HDMI, but I HATED the N64 controller's analogue stick's lack of durability.
