Controlling Multiple devices with an Arturia Keystep, A How-To

This a quick-ish little video I made on how to control at least two devices with a regular Arturia Keystep controller. Controlling more than two requires one or more of the devices you're controlling to have an onboard sequencer like the Korg Volca Keys demonstrated here. Great demo. Thanks for sharing. This morning, I recorded the same model Arturia sequencing a PureData synth running on a Raspberry Pi (which it was attached to via USB. I ran patch cable from the Sync out on the Arturia to a Behringer Crave's Tempo jack where I manually triggered playback of its pattern (in a similar way to what you did in this video). I then used the Arturia's Kbd Play function to play on the off beats of the PD sequence. It had the sound of three parts. Really makes you appreciate the living hell 60s and 70s synth players had to go through, doesn't it?

Pretty simple really. MIDI out goes to the Neutron midi in, the neutron midi thru goes to a splitter and then to the meeblip and volca.

Great! Thanks for the tutorial. I have a question. To play 2 synths at the same time knob must be only in seq mode, right? Or it works in seq and arpeg mode? Thank you

I use computers all day and use this to escape that a little. Granted I do like technology. I do everything DAWless at the moment. I just recently got a midi splitter and actually have everything hooked up to just that keystep. Outputs go to an old Yamaha line level mixer and I output that a zoom h2 recorder when I want decent audio. Otherwise it’s an old iPhone speaker I use as a monitor.

I have a keystep 37 coming any day now and I have lots of volcas. How do you change the midi channels on a volca device itself? Thanks.

Nice Video! When the Keystep is connected with all the other devices - are the sequences (Volca, Microfreak, TD-3...) all at the same tempo automatically, like it is when using a sync connection? Thank You very much!

Yes it’s all connected through midi splitters or pass thru. You might have to tell some devices to prefer the midi tempo over internal but the volcas do that out of the box.

thanks for your video! I can't figure it out how to control one synth at time with key step 37, I have it connected to cubit go midi or usb hub, even I made sure each device its on the right channel, when I change the channel it won't play the device (Korg monologue xd, MPC one, deluge, iPad, etc...) any input will be appreciated, I understand that sequencer only for one device, but shouldn't it be able to play multiple devices 9not at the same time) when midi channel is switched? thanks

If you have the devices on different midi channels you should be able to have the sequencer play on one and then hold shift+keyboard play+midi channel to "free play" the keyboard on that channel while the sequencer continues on the channel it was originally set to.

What are you using to get sound out of the neutron and what cables do you use to connect it?

Was just running a stereo 1/8th in jack from the output on the patch panel to that small passive 4ch mixer and then another out of that to an old iPhone speaker.

hello, i would like to ask if arturia keystep is going to work if connetcted to two old hardware synths from the 90's which don't have an onboard sequencer?

You can put them on different midi channels and have a sequence on the keystep play on one channel and then “free play” on the other.

Newbie here. How is this all connected? So for the midi out the keystep , do you split the midi to 3 and plug it in their inputs ? Thanks !

It’s been a min but I think I used the midi thru (it has an in and an out) on the Berlinger and splitters for the rest. Just “Y” cables, nothing fancy.

Can this do a different sequence with each synth at the same time or would the pro be need for that?

You can sequence one and free play another. That’s the most you can control with just this device.

This all depends on the device. The keystep has a setup mode as does the meeblip while the neutron has dip switches.

@@mullydoesmusic-ishstuff5506 got my td-3 rd-8 and volca bass connected via midi control center .but i want my moog werkstatt /CV expander also on the keystep ..but don't know how to put it on a different channel

afaik, cv doesn’t have a channel. channels are a midi thing. according to the manual, when using kbd play mode, the sequencer will go to cv while the keyboard will go to midi.

Did you have to replace the encoders on the Triode? I'm wondering how to deal with my Geode(send it back or take it apart)

I updated my triode to the latest roms and that was only a chip or two. Not sure if that included the encoders. It was an easy upgrade, should be a video on my channel of me doing it.

I figure out how to play another synth at different midi Chanel Wile sequencer running..but I can't figure out how to play chords only in the second channel. When I turn the chords knob both Chanel playing chords.....any help?

Hmmmm the manual says on page 22 that it’s possible but doesn’t really say how to do it. I’d have to experiment with it a bit. As it is I’ve rarely used chord mode. downloads.arturia.com/products/keystep/manual/KeyStep_Manual_1_0_0_EN.pdf

I don’t know enough about DMX or TLS lighting but if they can receive MIDI then I would think so.

what is the tiny mixer you are using?

This one. 4 channel stereo passive mixer. Reduces volume a little and works well if everything is the same brand but when you mix brands lowing the vol on one device can increase it on the other. Has something to do with unbuffered different impedances. Still it works and they’re cheap! amzn.to/2QwT4yA

From the looks of it, it's actually Little Bear MC5 Mini mixer. I was wondering about buying one myself for minimal, mobile Volca setup, but am worried about audio noise/interference and level of audio output (if it's not too quiet on headphones or portable speaker). Did you notice any increase in audio noise when using it? Volca Keys by itself is very noisy just powered on, not even playing anything (no matter DC or batteries - it's just the circuitry and LEDs causing it).
