A Cal State Long Beach student claims a final exam question crossed the line into racism.

I'm a white old lady and it's highly offensive and racist in my opinion; the teacher who wrote it should be publicly investigated. What does graffiti have to do with health science unless you are worried about spray paint fumes?? I took a chemistry class at the height of the aids crisis and the teacher was telling 18 year olds (the age group most in danger of contracting aids at the time) that the black abalone disease (on abalones) was what they should worry about, and not aids at all.

Some teachers will put humorous questions on exams, but this one is offensive to all those mentioned in the multiple choice and very inappropriate.
@ButterySkater5 жыл бұрын
Wouldnt that be a criminal justice question? Why health.
@joesoria26245 жыл бұрын
Buttery Skater for sure something that could be in CRJU, but there would have been stats in the question or answer choices or that topic would’ve been gone over in class. This question had no stats AND I don’t even know how it’s related to the Health Sciences field.

The bigger problem is the idiocracy of a multiple choice take-home final exam for Health Science class. If it were Engineering, Physics, or any technical science where the final exam might take 18 hours to do, I'd understand.

Its always CSU long beach, plus, some gangs do more graffiti than others. A gang that is predominantly is black, on average, will make more graffiti than a white gang (as there is less of them). It may seem racist, but its true.

Wow as a masters student in math at this school, I do not even know where to begin. If you look at the context, NONE of the other questions have ANYTHING to do with gangs, gangs have NOTHING to do with the health sciences, furthermore as an educator myself I apologize on behalf of instructors and educators all over, this is NOT common protocol for ANY instructor or educator ANYWHERE. There is absolutely ZERO excuse as to why this happened this faculty member need be held fully responsible.

I took this health science course back in 2015. If I remember correctly, there was a survey conducted years prior, early 2000s to late 2000s, that asked middle and high school students if they have ever done graffiti on public property. If students answered the race/ethnicity question, the survey states Asians are less likely to graffiti public property. Surveys are always flawed, but the information was likely provided by the professor. Whether the survey is valid or not, it should be questioned by the professor. I agree the question is posed incorrectly and that it may not have relevance anymore.

Benjamin Villanueva, what’s that got to do with health??

@@kevin6293 It had nothing to do with Health, but was part of a Sociological survey which asked certain behaviors/ activities students partake. Some topics includes drug-use, sexual orientation, sexual activity, and criminal behavior.

Please. This is being taken completely out of context and with no real explanation from the student. Even though it “wasn’t discussed during class”, is it in the book? Did this student even go to every single class? And secondly, those students that were interviewed, do they take that class, or are they just random students? Sounds to me like they’re just plucked off the sidewalk. And their opinions pretty much align together-was a student whose opinion was different going to be put up, if that was taped?(probably not). And PLEASE, explain to me, HOW is this offensive? Maybe it would be if there wasn’t a major ethnicity group not mentioned as an option, I would understand why it could be. But the four major races are there. (and please people, don’t freak out when I say ‘four major races’; I’m sure people will be ‘offended’ by that too-but answer me this: what race(s) do those four words not generally*** encompass? **geneally being key word here folks). Statistics are mapped for almost anything someone could think of, including the act of gang graffiti. So why couldn’t there be a stat for this?? And I’m sure there’s some explanation of that particular stat tying into health science; my guess maybe being that whichever gang that does the most may have high health problems from the fumes and the gang that does the least less health problems. Maybe I’m wrong about how it ties in, but come on. I’m currently a student at Long Beach state, and I’m serious when I ask this-how is that question offensive? I truly believe that people, and I hate to say it but especially the younger generation, millennials, are learning and have been taught that if something, some statement, has to do with race in some way, then it’s immediately offensive. Do not be so narrow minded, do not be so soft, so easily offended. Race is a natural part of life, it’s okay to talk about it. This is a fact of life, of history: People of specific races stereotypically band together. Yes, there are exceptions, but if you go walk through Koreatown near LB you’ll mostly see Koreans and Korean restaurants. If you go walk through Compton you’ll see mostly black and Hispanic people. I’m a millennial, and the people of my generation who are easily offended, who take everything so personal and have to make a large deal out of so many things that shouldn’t be, embarrass me. I’m embarrassed to be a millennial.

This isn't offensive at all and it's definitely worthy of discussion, but why is it in a health science class? Crime stats should not be a part of health science. It doesn't make any sense.

@Isaac-tj3hj5 жыл бұрын
There’s a difference, a very stark difference, between racial classification and racialization of a particular group. In this case, the test corroborates the obvious stereotype of Hispanics being in gangs. It assigns a racial stereotype to Hispanics in order to add to the criminalizing narrative pushed forth by anti-immigration groups and nativist movements. This is a VERY racist question.
