Geoff, you speak very well and enthusiastically. Your background research is also very evident. You're doing some good work. Please keep at it. I live in Orkney and haven't bought a Scapa or an HP for about twenty years, a lot of the local boys are the same. It's sadly become the ultimate self-parody at behest or remotely placed marketing dept. Do keep going. Your input is valuable and important. Good Luck.

Oh, my. How nice, as a 68 year old Scots woman, to find myself matching tastes so closely.with a young American man. Bunnahabbhain was my first real love from the Islays as well. Laphroig and Lagavulin were the first whiskies I ever really enjoyed and I only discovered them in my 40s. I was introduced to Bunnahabbhain by a local and was lost. I then moved on to Caol Ila (which I LOVE with deserts, especially chocolate) and most recently Kilchoman is my joy!

I agree for the most with you, but I would swap 1 and 2. Been to Kilchoman and had a tour there. I love their passion. Being independent, doing all themselves. I love it. Their whiskies are very good and different from each other. Bunnahabhain has more of a cult status. They do have also very fine and distiguished whiskies. For Bruichladdich I agree to pricey for some whiskies. Been there bought the octomore 13.4 and I love it, but so expensive. For me also the Port Charlotte 10y best in taste and price. One of my all time favoritw whiskies

Totally agree with your #1 pick. I also have Ardbeg ahead of Laphroaig. But not Lagavulin. I just think Lagavulin produces a more complex and nuanced product than the other two and appreciate that. Lagavulin 8 is a great offering with no added coloring or chill filtering at a very respectable ABV.

@@Gwhisky I much prefer it over the profiles of Ardbeg 10 or Laphroaig 10. Its my favorite widely available peat monster. There's nothing overtly weird about it, unlike WeeBeastie which to me has a number of odd characteristics going making it better for blending.

Excellent overview! Wld love to see u do smthg like this for specific distilleries where u give an overview of the house character, which releases u consider their best “pure” representation of their distillate, and which bottles u think their best expressions and why. It wld b great to have a guide like that for Kilchoman, for example, that provides a newcomer with an entry point and mayb a 2-3 bottle guide leading up to what u consider their best release. I think u might b the best reviewer to provide such distillery/brand guides bec u hit all the essential points of taste and history and also concisely explain exactly why u draw ur conclusions - such guides r not so readily available online, require alot of digging and watching thru alot of minutes to extract such info so I think u’d fill a great niche that will def increase ur subscribers. Love ur reviews and wld dig seeing u grow - within limits so ur still accessible! 😉
@marclambert8596
@marclambert8596 2 жыл бұрын
I’d also add that it wld b great to have such guides differentiate bet core bottlings, special releases, and any great indies u know of, and what u consider the differences among the distillery’s peated, unpeated, and cask finished releases. The way u do here with Cao Ila was SO helpful!

Totaly agree with your list, Geoff. I haven't tasted all of the brands from Islay so presentation and price have more weight in my list than personal expirience, but still I would rank them exactly the same. I just wish Bunnahabhain 18 wasn't so overpriced where I am... As for the bottom part of the list I think it is only fair. There is no excuse for cutting corners and giving poorly presented product at "premium price". It's a real shame that Diageo milk the Caol Ila dry for their watered down blends and the official bottlings of it are inferior to almost any indi bottle. On the other hand Laphroaig and Bowmore are not used for blends and still their "mothership" Beam Suntory just won't let them put out craft presented whisky for the most part, which I find mind boggling. Cheers!

Totally agree with your list, and I feel a wee bit of local pride at your number 1 pick. The main bottling site for Distell is located behind the woods at the back of my house. On quite evenings I do maybe 10 circuits of the 2km loop in the industrial estate on my bike, where their warehouse and factory sits. At the moment there are maybe 500 fresh empty casks sitting by the main fence, and if the breeze blows in the right direction the smells are just amazing. Warm oak, sherry and malt whisky. Sounds romantic but this is a seriously large site with millions of pounds worth of whisky stored in a mixture of new and old warehousing. Great video as ever - not tried the 18yo yet so definitely going to seek that out. 👍

I totally understand your ranking, I also don't like Laphroaig so much due to it's medicinal hospital peat smoke, I am more the "campfire" guy :) But I also really like the Port Charlotte 10, extremely nice and interesting taste between fruity sweet and smoky. Kilchoman is also quite nice but some of them are a bit too young having that metallic alcohol touch, that's why I'm waiting for an older one.

Love this that you've come straight out and ranked them, I'm not a peat head, but I have visited all the distilleries on Islay save Ardnahoe, I'd have Bruichladdich #1, they get extra brownie points for maturing everything on Islay, but I should point out that quite a few of the bottles without credits to an Islay Distillery are in fact Buna Moine or Staoisha peated versions of Bunnahabhain. Soon you will have a 10th and 11th distillery in the new Elixir one and the revamping of Port Ellen, I've even heard a 12th will be producing Rum on the Island soon. Will Islay sink with the weight of lorries moving grain and whisky to and from the ferries?
@Gwhisky

I'm tracking with you on the several that I know, including Laphroiag, Ardbeg, Lagavulin, and Bunnahabhain. Of the latter, I purchased a bottle of twelve year old in my Quest for "a hint of peaty smoke" in my chosen whisky. It was good, but I'm still nursing that bottle looking for that 'hint' that they hint at on the bottle. I haven't experienced it yet, but it has risen to my third favorite, behind the Auchentoshan Three Barrel and Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban. I found more of what I was looking for in the Westland Peated Single Malt out of Seattle, than I have any Scottish distillation, but the whiskey itself is not nearly as refined...they're brash upstarts.

Hi, just recently discovered your channel. It's great! I pretty much agree with your Islay ranking, except for #1. Bunna has great stuff but their nas expressions are a bit disappointing. Kilchoman and Bruichladdich (pc and octomore) are in my top 3 but Caol Ila also. Too bad the Core range doesn't get the presentation it deserves, it would be stellar at 46% abv and ncf, but I haven't come across a bad IB yet! Keep up the good work!

Not a problem, excellent explanations for each positioning. I'm beginning to think we should have "light" 40% ABV, "popular" 43% and craft 46%+ and non-chillfiltered etc. Designation in scotch like we have in beer here in the states. It would clear up a lot of smoke and mirrors that folks like Macallan is doing. IMHO.

I currently have Laphroaig cask strength batches 11 and 12, Ardbeg Ten and Uigeadail, a Port Charlotte 10 and a Lagavulin 8 (just finished the 9 y.o. GOT edition bit didn't care much for it). I plan to go and pick up a Kilchoman Sanaig with a liquor store gift card I just received for my birthday. I had a Machir Bay cask strength last year but wasn't too impressed. Hopefully the Sanaig will change my mind on Kilchoman. I've only had the Bunnahabbain 12 and the NAS peated version. Both were nice and I appreciate that I can still get the 12 for $50. The peated I believe was like $65. Laphroaig 10 cask strength has been my favorite Islay, expecially when it was $65. It's recently jumped to $80. So not quite as good a value. But to me, it is classic in-your-face Islay. I'll always enjoy Ardbeg, but I agree it seems like it's lost something. I recently picked up another Uigeadail at a decent price to give it a second chance but I wasn't impressed with the first bottle I had. I did prefer the Corryvrecken. Though both are getting pricey here in the Chicago area. I'm also underwhelmed by Caol Ila and Bowmore, particularly the low ABVs. I come first from the bourbon world where high proof is much the norm. I think scotch single malts have more to offer in variety and complexity, but wish they would incorporate higher ABVs more often like the Americans do with bourbon and rye. It makes such a big difference.
@Gwhisky
@Gwhisky 2 жыл бұрын
Sanaig is a wonderful whisky, although I've heard it can be a bit pricey in some parts of the states. Based on your preferences, I think you'll get along well with the sherried Kilchomans. They're much better than the Machir Bay, which is decent but nothing too special. I always get jealous when I hear what ppl pay for the Laphroag CS in America. It's substantially higher where I live, which makes me hesitant to pull the trigger. Shame, really enjoyed that one and I'd love to compare and contrast the batches.
@xiamengbaby
@xiamengbaby 2 жыл бұрын
@@Gwhisky The Sanaig goes for around $70 in my area while the Loch Gorm is about $120. $70 is not too unreasonable for an Islay, especially a sherried one. $120 is getting pricey for me, so I figured the Sanaig was the logical next Kilchoman to try. Speaking of price disparity, even here in the States the prices can vary significantly. As one example Laphroaig 10 (the basic 10, not cask strength) goes for around $60 give or take $5, in the Chicago area. However I have seen it in the $30s in Arizona. Half the price! I won't buy it at $60, but at $30 something, I would definitely keep a bottle on hand.

An open ended question to what is obviously a subjective exercise: how much are you ranking the distillery vs the brand? Caol Ila, for instance, is available in a range of craft-presented independent bottlings that speak to the quality of its spirit, but the branded core range official expressions may be less exciting. So would quality independent bottlings boost the rank of Caol Ila, or would you credit the independent bottler for the cask maturation and presentation?
@Smoothsayer
@Smoothsayer 2 жыл бұрын
Ah, I saw in a later video your clarifying your scope to the brand/official bottlings. I myself would factor a distillery higher for good independent bottlings (showing the quality of the spirit), though obviously the brand’s presentation and value are a factor as well. For what it’s worth, my current list: 8) Bowmore (was never too amazed with the official 12, but tried and liked the 18 recently, and also was impressed by a hard-to-find independent 12 year) 7) Caol Ila (yes, it’s everywhere, and I haven’t bought core range in years, but there are sublime cask strength indies out there) 6) Bruichladdich (agree that Port Charlotte 10 is a gem. Classic Laddie is ok. Octomore and others are alas virtually unaffordable) 5) Lagavulin (Maybe not as it was, but the 16 still matters. The 12 is insanely priced, The 8 is a bit one- note for me) 4) Ardbeg (i agree, too many pricey collectors market releases in recent years, and the distillery character runs a tad sweet for me, but Uigie and Corry are solid) 3) Bunnahabhain (the 12 is best bang for buck, I really liked the Toiteach a Dha, and independent bottlings showing the consistent excellence of the spirit in a range of expressions, old, young, peated, unpeated, sherried, bourbon) speak to the quality of this distillery 2) Kilchoman (for all the reasons you’ve said. Every release is worth trying, and some are truly phenomenal) 1) Laphroaig (can’t help it. It’s so distinctive. Agree that the 10 isn’t what it once was, but QC is solid. There are great special releases including the cask strength that show how good the spirit can be and at least where I am, are not too unreasonably priced.)

I think Kilchoman is very overhyped just because they are new. I’ve tried a lot from them and never have been that impressed

Imagine pronouncing Caol Ila "cuhliluh" This is what my order would be: 1. Ardbeg 2. Bruichladdich 3. Laphroaig 4. Lagavulin 5. Bunnahabhain 6. Caol Ila 7. Kilchoman 8. Bowmore (by default only because I haven't tried it yet)

I would bow to your greater knowledge...........But I would match each with the same cask treatment viz Sherry with Sherry Oloroso with Oloroso etc

I know this wasn't intended to be nice, but I'm 40, so I'll take it as a compliment anyway.
