Early 707s with JT3C engines didn’t have a lot of power so they employed a water-injection system to boost thrust at takeoff, which had the effect of making them very smoky. Later when the JT4A was launched they stopped needing the water-injection system which ended the smoky takeoffs

Ahh I love the smell of jet smoke in the morning. This was back in the good old days of the early jet age. The late 50’s to early 1960’s. Back then it wasn’t a concern that your jet engine burned tons of fuel, spewed thick black smoke, and brutal noise levels the entire trip from city to city and country to country . But still the con air 880&990 were sleek, fast, luxurious airliners that fell in between the pages when comes to the success of their contemporaries. The 707, dc-8, and eventually the 727, 737, dc-9 etc. only 65 880’s were made and only 37 990’s doesn’t make sense but I guess they were over shadowed by bigger companies.

When I was a kid in the 1970s..my family would go on Sundays to Miami airport to see the panes...you could park by the runway at perimeter road. Suddenly, Modern air Convair 990 taxied to the runway....as it began rolling down the runway, it was obviously much more smoky than any other jetliner even back then. I became very worried because I seriously thought he was in trouble.....I thought he was on fire....those who knew better were laughing at my concern.....as the jetliner climbed out and flew normally...I said, " thank God he is ok" now I know all the smoke was perfectly normal for a Convair 990..... however, I can imagine that those who didn't know better must have had a similar reaction to mine when these jetliners were active. I admit, these early jetliners were much more exciting to see than today's eco friendly and be quiet Jetliners...they all seem to look the same with their large two engines....

The SMOKE OBSCURING THE AIRCRAFT AS IT THROTTLED DOWN THE RUNWAY! The rotation! The airframe emerges from the smoke! More smoke! Mostly particulates, which are shorter lived in the atmosphere than oxides of nitrogen. Its neither clean nor GOOD, but visible smoke doesn't tell the whole story. Higher combustion temperatures produce less smoke, but actually more oxides of nitrogen. The low efficiency is actually the worst part of the older engines, because they simply convert more carbon per mile (whether to visible particulates or invisible CO/CO2) than more efficient engines.

@thegreenbastard51714 жыл бұрын
@@anels9 Forgive me I know little of jet engines, how does water contribute to thrust?
@anels94 жыл бұрын
The Green Bastard Water is normally injected either at the compressor inlet or in the diffuser just before the combustion chambers. Adding water increases the mass being accelerated out of the engine, increasing thrust, but it also serves to cool the turbines. Since temperature is normally the limiting factor in turbine engine performance at low altitudes, the cooling effect lets the engine run at higher RPM with more fuel injected and more thrust created without overheating
@anels94 жыл бұрын
The Green Bastard don’t quote me on this, but I’m certain the cv990 didn’t have water injection as it had an early version of what we now know as a turbofan. The engine on the 990 was also unique in that they used a fan stage at the rear of the engines, compared to the fan stage at the front of the engine on 707s/dc8s
