Just got this Lumina convection oven from ALDI - which was a bargain for only $25. This was my first attempt at using it and I was exteremely happy with the results. The cooking process was simplicity itself as all I did prior to cooking was rub some crushed garlic onto the lamb shanks.

...don't forget to take veges out of freezer bag before you put in oven! You can cook both chops and veges together. Another little hint is to place a sheet of foil in the bottom, folded up the sides a bit and then a sheet of baking paper on top of that. Just put them in and mould them to the shape of the bowl. Doing this will save you a hell of a lot of cleaning as all the fats etc are caught in the little well that you have made. When it's cooled down just pull the sheets out screw up& in bin

It all comes down to personal taste. As I mentioned in the clip I like my shanks to fall off the bone & this is achieved by slow cooking them so that they are well done. BTW the ALDI oven is not halogen it only has an electric element. Some more expensive units also have a halogen light in them as well but this model cooks just fine & I do not miss not having one.

I've liked mine so far and I've had it a year, it is a Sharper Image one, the handle safety feature broke on it so it has to be unplugged or the timer has to run out for it to turn off. Annoying but it still works. Meat is by the best thing to cook in these, I've had mixed results with veggies and baking.

If you mean the LED light then Yes it does. That is due to the thermostat when the element comes on & off to maintain the temperature setting that you have selected.

Niyaz - No I did not need to turn the lamb shanks as the heat is fan forced and circulates around them on all sides. Rab carn - Vegetables have a shorter cooking time than the meat so you just put in your veggies when your meat is about 30 minutes away from being cooked. A little tip for potatoes is to put a whole potato into a microwave for a few minutes then take it out and cut it into 4 pieces and into the convection oven which will shorten the cooking time for the baked potatos but I dont normally do this unless I am in a bit of a hurry. Regards, Steve

Hello sir - thank you for 'normal cooking' no chef type food or cooking something people would only eat if there were no Turkeys on Christmas day. I followed your demonstration easily & will be doing that myself. Lamb shanks are good 'bloke food' meaning, I can cook 2 & eat 2 - lamb is my favourite. Been a few years since you posted, hope the Aldi machine lasted, no reason why it wouldn't. Please don't think I was being sexist with regard to the comment of 'bloke food' - I was referring purely to greed! Hope you doing well, best wishes.

I have the Oyama oven which is very similar. One thing I would suggest is put a non-stick round cake pan at the bottom to catch the grease and it will make clean-up so much easier. Easier to take out the pan and clean it than wrestle the huge glass bowl in the sink!

ONE GIGANTIC PROBLEM - If you break the glass bowl YOU CANNOT GET A REPLACEMENT. You MUST buy a complete new unit. However, if you do break one you can still use your oven by placing the metal extension ring in a large cast iron skillet and put the top on that. You can still see through the lid if you want to watch the food as it cooks.

My Lumina from ALDI definitely does not have a light that lights up the cooking bowl The only lights it has are the 2 LED lights near the control knobs - one for power and the other for heat when the heating element comes on. Maybe your one is a later model than mine and they have now included a light..

Moose-that comment about taking veges out of bag was exactly for the people you just mentioned "blow me away". I reckon there would be some dumbies out there that would leave them in the bag. Foil and b/paper together for strength to roll up like a ball and it makes a better leak proof container. Another hint-when chops are just starting to brown, you'll see a fair bit of juice on top. Turn off oven and let rest for awhile. The juices will be absorbed back into meat, turn over and finish cookn

Michael I am no electrician but as the element in this unit it is much smaller than a wall oven so I would spect that it would use much less power. I haven't tried to cook a stew but can't see why it would not work just as well. It is after all just a fan forced oven..

The problem as I see it with putting the potatoes on the lower rack under the meat on the top rack would be that all of the fats that you see in the bottom of the bowl would drip all over the potatoes which I prefer not to happen as I don't want to eat this fat. I did cook the potatoes at the same time as the lamb shanks but took them out partially cooked as they did not need the same length of overall cooking time. Thanks for your comment by the way.

Potatoes take around 30 minutes or so depending on your temp. I put mine on the top rack as I don't want all the fat from the meat dripping all over them. If you microwave the potatoes first it cuts down the cooking time as by doing this they are already cooked any you o9nly need to make them golden brown in the convection oven.
@Ozbullwinkle
@Ozbullwinkle 9 жыл бұрын
Hope your chicken and potatoes were a success. Timing is a visual thing and using a kitchen fork to test things. You can speed up the cooking time for the potatoes though by microwaving them first.

I place my potato on the short rack and the meat on the high rack with the exstender on so that the beautiful meat juices can drip on potatoes. Quick question: Where is your lid stand? The lid can "explode" from the contact with the cold benchtop cause it's super hot.
@Ozbullwinkle
@Ozbullwinkle 3 жыл бұрын
Yes your method sounds good too but I prefer not having the fat from meat or chicken dripping on my potatoes. Just a personal preference. Regarding the lid explosion risk I have been using this same Convection Oven instead of my wall oven for almost 10 years now with no issues. I think the stainless still ring on the outside of the lid overcomes this risk. Thanks for watching. I recommend taking a look at my Mashed Potato method video, it's a real winner & time saver.

Hello, I just got one of these and attempted to cook a beef roast that was 3.3lbs and the instructions said I believe 25 minutes. Well, after an hour it was FAR from done and I had to throw it in the regular oven. I think for smaller stuff this works well however. Have you tried anything a bit larger?
@Ozbullwinkle
@Ozbullwinkle 10 жыл бұрын
I agree that larger thick cuts of meat take much longer in these types of ovens compared to a conventional oven. I don't do thick cuts in mine for the reason that you state above. I find that for a chicken it cooks fine whole as it is hollow but I prefer to butterfly them like the one shown in my Tandoori Chicken clip.
@Ozbullwinkle
@Ozbullwinkle 9 жыл бұрын
I never go by hard and fast rules like times to cook meat. Every piece of meat is different, some take longer than others. A simple method is to use a kitchen fork and check the colour of the juices that come out of the meat. Also if the fork goes in with little resistance you know that the meat is doe and is tender. You could also use a meat thermometer as well.

can i ask you why you didnt make use of the meat juices and fat when u did the potatoes? couldnt u have just popped your spuds underneath the meat ?

Hi Paul, Thanks for your comment. I prefer the more healthy option as I intentionally do not want the fat dripping all over my potatoes. Also if they were under the meat I suspect that they would take longer to brown. It just comes down to personal preference and I want to increase the mileage I get out of my coronary arteries :-)

Yes, you could put the fat from the meat onto the roast potatoes if you want. It just comes down to personal preference. I personally don't want to eat this fat so I like my potatoes without the fat on them.

Annabel, maybe you should get one like mine which does not have the halogen bulb. I have cooked lots of things and it is going strong. You can see my electric element if you look at my new clip for Honey Soy & Ginger chicken legs.

Good stuff, I really love mine & have never got into the current air fryer fad. This little Convection oven does it all. Try cooking a turkey like in one of my other videos in a little air fryer.

Sorry to hear that you did not get a good result Lynette. Can't understand why your lamb shanks were "awful". I season mine before cooking and also put some herbs on them like rosemary and they turn out great as shown in my video. You just need to cook them to your liking so there is no hard and fast cooking time as everyone has different preferences but I certainly like mine well cooked. Potatoes take longer than 20 minutes though, have a look at my earlier reply about them to Anne Marie Hammond which you will find below. Once again cook them to your liking and their golden colour really sums them up. Don't know what you mean about the light going on & off though. My oven does not have a light in the bowl as it us not convection. The only "light" that goes on and off on mine is the one on the top of the lid at the dial for the temperature which is normal and us just the thermostat turning the heating element on & off to maintain the oven temperature.
@Ozbullwinkle
@Ozbullwinkle 10 жыл бұрын
Just an edit to my lengthy reply where I am talking about the light. I should have said that mine does not gave a light in the bowl as it is not HALOGEN whereas I said Convection by mistake.
@lynettekomidar
@lynettekomidar 10 жыл бұрын
Ozbullwinkle I think it had a bit to do with the light turning on and off the whole time. However, 20 mins. to cook a potato under halogen is expensive. it takes 5 in microwave.
@Ozbullwinkle
@Ozbullwinkle 10 жыл бұрын
Lynette, as my oven is not halogen I cannot comment on your issue. But I do not know how you could cook a baked potato in a microwave in only 5 minutes, cook a potato in its jacket in 5 minutes yes but not a browned baked potato.
9 жыл бұрын
Say you dial in 170 degrees, when the oven gets to that temp the light goes OFF.. When the temp drops it goes back ON to show it's heating up to 170 again. Takes longer than 20 minutes to do lamb. Read the user manual. E.g 2kg chicken takes about 70 minutes at 200 degrees with a few veggies around the sides. Cooking just one potato alone is a waste of time and energy.

Sanja Vuković there is no recipe when baking lamb shanks, it is very simple. You just put them in the oven totally raw & as I said in the video I cooked them for 1.5 hours as I like the meat to fall off the bone. The temperature was 180 degrees Celsius which is a standard roasting temperature. The potatoes take only about 30 minutes.

I didn't get a recipe book with mine and frankly I don't think that you need any as you can use recipes from any recipe book and even though the cooking times may vary having the glass bowl makes it easy to keep an eye on what you are cooking. If cooking meat of any type just use a kitchen fork to test how it is progressing.

@Ozbullwinkle 9 жыл бұрын
Yes, you could certainly cook sausages in this convection oven. There is nothing mysterious about this oven as it is just an electric element with a fan to distribute the heat. If you want to release some of the fat from the sausages just prick them with a fork during cooking.

You can cook anything that you like in the convection oven that I have. It has am electric element just like a normal wall oven with a fan to distribute the heat.

Definitely! You can cook anything that you can cook in a conventional oven. If I was cooking sausages I would put some water in the bottom of the bowl to catch the fat which makes cleanup so much easier. I would also prick the sausages with a fork to let the fat escape from them as well.

Captain Obvious about taking it out of the the bag before cooking - us Moose are pretty smart you know but then again the comments that some people make just blow me away. I like your tip about the foil in the base of the bowl but what benefit does the baking paper on top of the foil give. I would not think it would assist with browning the meat being under it.

After all these years I've stumbled across your clip on the Lumina turbo. I noticed that you mentioned that yours doesn't have an internal light that lights up the bowl. Just to jog your memory, I bought mine from Aldi ($24.99) bout the same time as you did. You better have a look under the lid, cause mine definitely has a bright light that comes on whenever the oven is powering up to the selected temp and then goes off when the temp is reached, and then turns on again etc. etc.. It keeps doing this all the time the unit is in cooking mode, i.e. until the timer goes off. I was just thinking that maybe yours actually doesn't have a light, or possibly the globe has blown or not screwed in properly ? By the way, I don't use foil and baking paper in the bottom anymore, just the baking paper. I tear off a piece about 3" longer than the width of the bottom of the bowl, push it into the base and work in with finger nails to form the circle and excess up the sides a bit( I think you know what I mean). All the fat drips onto the b/paper and can't get away cause you've formed a little dish so to speak. Once the fat and other stuff has cooled, you just carefully lift the b/paper out, screw it up and chuck it. All I have to do occasionally is wipe the inside of the bowl with some paper towel dipped into your washing up water and squeezed out before wiping. Freaking easy man ! Forget the self cleaning gimmick, that's a load of bull. I've tried a thousand different ideas and recipes in the old turbo and 95% have been SUCCESS !!!

loutondacoast Thanks for your comment & I am glad that you have found my channel & enjoyed it. My little oven has an electric element only, it is definitely not halogen & has no bulb. I think that there were 2 different models, some were halogen & others were totally electric like mine. If you have a look at some of my other cooking videos, can't recall exactly which one it is, but I address this very issue & give a close up view of my electric element. Using the baking paper is a great method isn't it, I do this too & it makes cleanup a snack as you say. I love this little oven, never use my wall oven now & it has been going strong for over 7 years with very regular usage. Thanks again for watching. BTW be sure to check out my "Worlds Fastest Mashed Potato" clip as it's a real winner & so easy too.

@@Ozbullwinkle ....no I'm not saying mine has a halogen Globe, just a regular light globe, kinda like a microwave oven has, and only comes on when the thermo cuts in. I think they put it in there so you can see what's happening while you're cooking. Definitely not halogen ! ...and yes I have checked out your WFMP clip. I have been doing something similar, but whole potatoes simmered slowly in a saucepan, and then put through one of those Sumo Graters (James Sheeny), it leaves the skin behind, kinda the same thing, but not quite as fast. Simmering vegetables real slow in lightly salted water with a couple of dashes of brown vinegar, is much more healthy in my opinion. You should try it. Baked potatoes .. try lifting the lid slightly ajar at the last five, or ten minutes. Helps get some of the moisture out and definitely makes them a bit more crisp. Happy cooking Moose !!

You have to watch it though, after a while it starts to burn through those screws that hold the perforated element cover on. These will eventually burn/corrode and the fan cover will drop off, then your temperature sll goes to rat shit and anything fatty you cook will be plastered all over the upper inside of the oven/fan and lid.

I have been using my original same Convection Oven for over 6 years on a regular basis & have not experienced this issue & I see no sign of degradation of my screws. Thanks for your comment though. Wrong in the very first word. Think about what produces the heat - it's a halogen BULB...

No, it is you that are WRONG when commenting about my convection oven. It has a circular electric element with a fan to evenly circulate the heat and does not have any bulb at all and is certainly not halogen! I am well aware that some other makes are halogen but my one is not.
