A special After-Party conversation with director Ryan Murphy, Meryl Streep, James Corden, Nicole Kidman, Keegan-Michael Key, Andrew Rannells, Jo Ellen Pellman, Ariana DeBose, Kevin Chamberlin, and Kerry Washington.
Releasing on Netflix on Friday, December 11, The Prom tells the story of New York City stage stars Dee Dee Allen (three-time Academy Award winner Meryl Streep) and Barry Glickman (Tony Award winner James Corden), who have a crisis on their hands: their expensive new Broadway show is a major flop that has suddenly flatlined their careers. Meanwhile, in small-town Indiana, high school student Emma Nolan (newcomer Jo Ellen Pellman) is experiencing a very different kind of heartbreak: despite the support of the high school principal (Keegan-Michael Key), the head of the PTA (Kerry Washington) has banned her from attending the prom with her girlfriend, Alyssa (Ariana DeBose). When Dee Dee and Barry decide that Emma’s predicament is the perfect cause to help resurrect their public images, they hit the road with Angie (Academy Award winner Nicole Kidman) and Trent (Andrew Rannells), another pair of cynical actors looking for a professional lift. But when their self-absorbed celebrity activism unexpectedly backfires, the foursome find their own lives upended as they rally to give Emma a night where she can truly celebrate who she is.
Directed by Ryan Murphy and also starring Tracey Ullman, Kevin Chamberlin, Mary Kay Place, Nico Greetham Logan Riley, Nathaniel J. Potvin and Sofia Deler, The Prom is the spectacular, big-hearted film adaptation of Chad Beguelin, Bob Martin and Matthew Sklar’s award-winning, Tony-nominated Broadway musical. Screenplay by Bob Martin and Chad Beguelin; the film is produced by Ryan Murphy, Alexis Martin Woodall, Adam Anders, Dori Berinstein and Bill Damaschke.

I can't stop watching this film. I'm a 63yr old lesbian who never got to go to any proms and this was so much fun to watch. The cast is exceptional, I've fallen in love with each one of them for so many different reasons. The talent that they showed from singing, dancing to acting was phenomenal. I'm a musical theater nerd and this is my answer to not being able to get to NYC to see the stage production. I've watched it everyday, sometimes twice a day to lift my spirits and bring joy to my heart. What a gift to receive in our trying times.

Some of the gay critics out there need some serious criticism thrown back in their faces. All the negative outrage poor James Corden is getting is really unfounded. His portrayal was wonderful. His performance of the songs is fun and funny. Yes, he played Barry with a gay swish, but that's the way the role and especially the songs are written! Look at the lyrics. They weren't meant to be performed by a macho straight-acting jock. I really think many critics these days, especially the younger queens, pick films apart and look for ways to be offended so they can lash out and strike up an attention grabbing protest. Not every gay-themed movie needs to be analyzed to make sure it has the proper quota of cis, bi, trans and questioning actors in it. If a gay actor had given the same performance Corden gave, he would be getting wide praise right now. It's ludicrous to say that gay and trans roles should only be played by gay and trans actors. Grow up queenies. And stop whining. Corden is great, and he's a very gay-friendly guy. MERYL ROCKS! (I'm gay, by the way, so there.)

Do I think he deserved the severity of the hate he got? No. But do I think that maybe it would have been more appropriate if they cast a gay man? Yes. Like his portrayal got better as it went it, but at first I was really caught off guard bc his portrayal felt borderline offensive. And then to see Kevin Chamberlain and Andrew Rannells, two openly gay men, also cast in the movie kinda just felt like a slap to the face. Of course, I don't see either of them playing Barry, but my point is, I understand the blacklash that Corden got. I enjoyed him in the movie because he does have an amazing voice and presence, I just wish they didn't have him be SUPER flamboyant.

Ryan Murphy you have nooo idea all you have done for LGBTI population with Glee and this The Prom movie around the world! I speak from Bogotá, we are Colombians and having a transgender son was not easy (for him, because for us as parents was not difficult to keep on supporting him all the time❤️👌🏻) . Each time one person produces a movie or a show about LGBTI population you are helping many kids, teenagers and even adults to get out of their closets and be FREE, and THAT in a certain ways “erases” all the hard times you Ryan had when young. A BIG thanks as a mother for this movie and for talking about the LGBTI population as normal people that we find in every corner in the world. Congratulations to all the cast! I adore Meryl, James 💙and Nicole, well done as always! 🏅🏆

Have watched the movie three times.I can't say enough about the entire cast led by the fantastically funny and wonderfully human performances from Ms. Streep and Mr. Corden BUT . . . none of it works . . . without the "new girl." Jo Ellen Pellman is the (unruly) heart of the film. She's the essential centerpiece for this ensemble. Bravo, All!

Loved this movie, considering the amount of beautiful souls every year that choose to not stay here very long because of the unkindness they face out in the world for simply and naturally being themselves. This is brilliant. Was a fun and beautiful experience watching this movie.

"A Pathway to Healing." In Addition to the well-stated need for acceptance that the young leads gain and the LGBTQ Characters like James' being beautifully modeled,. there is also a healing for the artist characters like Meryl and Nicole's characters and a healing for Keegan's "fan" who overcomes idolatry and calls for truth and shows forgiveness and compassion. Much to celebrate amidst the heartfelt story-kudos to the whole team. Thank you! I'm going to watch it again, Meryl!

This is an amazing movie. I have watched it several times. In particular for me Ariana and Jo Ellen's role brought me back to high school where I too couldn't attend my prom. There were so many moments where I just cried and others where I left with hope and joy. The kiss at the end was so powerful. This movie isn't just for younger LGBT but also for those of us as elders in the community. Also Ariana did an amazing job. It is important to model the challenges young woman of color face with multiple identities. Thank you. I look forward to seeing Jo Ellen and Ariana in other films in the future.

Thank you for this great interview. It makes me feel warm inside, just as the movie did. I can not understand all the bad critics and all the hateful comments that I've read over the weekend about this movie or actors performing in it. It is an amazing wonderful movie which reflects all of what the cast just have said and the best of it is what Merryl Streep has said: You are able to watch it all over again... And again. 😊 So thanks to all of you. 🙏💃🕺🤩

My word is Essential. Everyone in the learning community (teachers, administrators, district, and PARENTS) need to see this movie. We all need to watch this movie and look at WHY we need to harbor an environment that is accepting for everyone. We need to see what happens to the kids made to feel like they are unsafe and unwelcome. We need to build school environments for everyone. It is so essential to understand that people who are different don’t want to be the center of a debate or some cautionary tale. They just want to feel safe in a space where they are feel free to just BE. This film is essential for all to see. #WeNeedToBeBetter #KidsDeserveBetter #SafeSpaceForAll Thank you Ryan Murphy for creating representation in media that we, as now grown lgbtqia+ children, so desperately needed when we were growing up.

I am 47 years old and grew up in Greenwood, Indiana...I have watched this show at least 20 times and cry every time...I went to my prom...but I wasn't able to be my authentic self and it really wasn't as "magical experience" that you think and dream your prom will be...the last scene where everyone walks into the room arm in arm with the people they love and you see every walk of life/love...I cry every time...I am SOOOOO glad that GLBTQ+ young people have something like this to watch and feel seen, loved and accepted...growing up an overweight feminine boy with acne in the bible belt, was not a good time...BUT...it made me the thick skinned human that I am today...I am grateful for those lessons, at the same time...in the words of Alysa Greene..."life is already hard"...and I am glad that GLBTQ+ young people today have a lot more support and legal rights than we did 30 years ago...and although I know we still have a ways to go...I am optimistic, that we will eventually get there....and films like this, move the conversation forward in a beautiful and meaningful way...Thank you to Ryan Murphy, the cast of The Prom, the incredible writers and composers and Netflix for this masterpiece....this 47 year old fat gay boy with acne...was able to "LOOK TO YOU" and see what could have been and what will be for other kids like me in the future.
