In this video, I show how I convert an alternator to a PMA. Probably not the only way to do it, but it has worked for me. This is the third one I have done and it works ok.
Check out my store. I have shirts, hats etc.

I lived off grid with a Honda generator for 3 years I just ran the generator for a few hours in the morning to freeze water in my freezer charge my 12v in parallel batteries and then run off 12 volt the rest of the night day you would be surprised how many things you plug in the wall have a Transformerwith rectifier inside them that steps down to 12 volts you can eliminate that and go straight into them plus when I made my lamps I used tail light bulbs when I finally could get a meter put in I use the 12 volt as a backup system or even when I wanted to save electricity

There is a way to do all this without grinding out a single piece of metal from the alternator. Where you pointed is actually what redirects the already built in magnetic field. Hence, making a straight North-South magnet coil in an alternating pattern by design to produce the alternating pattern required. Instead hook up a capacitor to the system and let electricity generate the magnetic field as it is intended to without loosing any efficiency from the alternator. Robert Murray-Smith has videos here showing how to do exactly this.

Wouldn't the altenator generate electricity without making it a pma? I don't understand why you would change it over. What the point? Alt run to battery run to power inverter period
@lukeFugate
@lukeFugate 5 жыл бұрын
The alternator in a car uses electricity to energize a coil inside the rotor. If it is on a car engine which spins it really fast and has plenty of torque it will have no problem generating more power than it uses. Also with the weaker electromagnet, it has to spin pretty fast to just start charging, about 2500 rpm. With the stronger neodymium magnets and doubling the number of magnets(which I did when I changed out the round magnets to the square)it only has to spin about 500 rpm to start making power. It is also a lot more efficient because it doesn't use power to make the electromagnet. The factory car alternator also produces dc current from the output which experiences heavy losses over a relatively short distance. With a pma, the ac output on the three wires can travel a lot farther without so much loss of power.

Great video nice explanation for people who know what your talking about. If you excited the field windings to power alt. by battery for use with gasoline engine would it still be necessary for battery after initial start up or after excited they stay electromagnetic as long as its running? Leaving alternator in original state.
@lukeFugate
@lukeFugate 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks. After a car is started and running the alternator field would stay self energized even without the battery. For example I have had a dead battery in my truck before and no one had booster cables. I swapped a good battery from a friends car into mine, started mine up and then took their battery out with the engine still running and put my dead one back in. I don't think it is a good idea with newer cars to do that because you could get a voltage spike and mess up the ECM but for my old truck it didn't hurt anything. In the case of using an alternator in this configuration the field windings put a load on the alternator and it takes some power to keep it moving. It doesn't matter with a gasoline engine, but with a water generator you need all the efficiency you can get.

You could use an old bicycle to power the alternator. people have actually done that without modifying the alternator. Thank you for the insightful video, I'm very curious to know if after this conversion you're still able to produce the same amount of power the alternator is rated for. So, if the alternator was originally rated for 60 amps at 12v, if spun at an alternators normal speed 5-6000 rpm, will it still produce 60 amps?

I believe it would only produce the same current it's rated at if the magnets he added produced the same strength magnetic field that the original rotor coil produced at full power input (no regulation) and if the same size air gap between the rotor and stator was maintained.
@shigatsuningen
@shigatsuningen Жыл бұрын
I personally believe it will impact the output quite drastically as there is no hobby method precise enough to make alterations to the factory design so that the magnets would be so exact as to be required for secure and exact output. See my other comment above on the actual proper way to do this without grinding away material that is supposed to be there. Where the suggested grinding would take place is in fact what produces the magnetic field if used correctly without destructive techniques.

Why wouldn't you just send power to the voltage regular from a battery to electrify the field ?
@lukeFugate
@lukeFugate 3 жыл бұрын
You lose a lot of efficiency by energizing the field. You automatically lose 40 watts of power to run the field coil. The PMA doesn't require any power to generate electricity. With a car engine you have plenty of extra torque to waste so it doesn't matter if it takes some of the power to make up for the field draw. In a lower torque application like a wind generator or water wheel, you don't have the power to spare to make up for the 40 watts required to energize the field. For example my water turbine produces about 50 watts of power. If I had to use some of that to energize the field, I would only be getting about 10 watts out of it. Also a standard car alternator doesn't produce any power until about 2000 to 2500 rpm. With the permanent magnets the rpms are closer to 1000 to start producing power. If you had a high torque/high speed application where the 40 watt loss would be negligible then the automatic voltage regulation of the alternator would be great to use. It just depends on the application.

What are the 3 wires that come out of the alternator? Two hots and one neutral? So when I hook up power it should be hot, hot, neutral and then ground from alternator screw to ground rod? Im thinking 20, 30 amp breaker, or is it only a small amount of power that runs a couple lights? I heard we can get 50 amps this way. Thanks.
@lukeFugate
@lukeFugate 4 жыл бұрын
The three wires coming out of the alternator are three hots. It is three phase AC power. You need a rectifier to smooth it out and make steady DC voltage. If you have something powerful enough to drive it, like a gas engine, some alternators put out over 150 amps. If it is going to be powered by a gas engine you would want to leave the alternator intact and run it the way it would have been under the hood.

@lukeFugate
@lukeFugate 4 жыл бұрын
@@jamesbrady1959 it depends on what you are trying to power. If it is just lights, then it would be fine to run from the "wild" AC coming from two of the wires from the alternator. If you wanted to run electronics or electric motors you would need to get the correct frequency and voltage to match up at a certain engine speed.
@lukeFugate
@lukeFugate 4 жыл бұрын
Not sure if the speed will match up with the frequency. Generator sets are designed to produce 220 volts or 110 volts at 60 hz with the engine running at 3600 rpm. Alternators are not designed that way. They are made to run at varying speeds and put out steady DC volts.

Yeah, the shaft is messed up. It couldn't ever be put back together as a regular alternator. It's ok for this application though. A PMA is a permanent magnet alternator. A regular car alternator uses 12 volts from the battery to activate a coil of wire inside the rotor creating an electromagnet. This alternator with the permanent magnets inside doesn't need to have power applied and is more efficient.

It depends on what is wrong with it. If the coils are still good it would work fine, you may have to get another regulator.

You didn't show which wire's you connected to on the alternator
@lukeFugate
@lukeFugate 4 жыл бұрын
There are only three wires coming out of the alternator. They hook up to the rectifier on the three terminals that are sticking out on the side of it. It doesn't matter what order you put them in.

Have you installed wind turbine using this method
@lukeFugate
@lukeFugate 4 жыл бұрын
I built a water turbine generator using this same one. It worked ok and provided power to my cabin for a few years. It probably still would, but the lines got clogged up and I haven't had time to fool with it lately.

Where did you get your magnets
@lukeFugate
@lukeFugate 5 жыл бұрын
They came from Amazon. They have all kinds of shapes of neodymium magnets on there. Rectangle magnets would be perfect for this.

you don't need the inverter just hook the ac from the alternator to the light

Magnet may come out shakey
@lukeFugate
@lukeFugate 4 жыл бұрын
At higher speed it can develop a shake as it is almost impossible to get it balanced perfectly. Although they are more expensive, a factory made PMA is better. It was fun to build this and it did work for low speed applications.

That might be something to look into, not sure if the magnetic field would be as strong as the neodymium magnets though.
