I have wanted this kind of wireless USB hub since I was developing a gaming device for consoles 4 years before. But at that time I didn't know too much about the raspberry pi and Linux stuff, the 2.4G and 5.8G chipset can't have this big bandwidth and compatibility for different kinds of devices. Now, this is it! Thanks for your sharing!

Quick note: You don't need the virtualhere software for this, the functionality is built into the linux kernel already. All you need is the usbip software. Of course, this doesn't come with a GUI application in typical linux fashion, but the cli is pretty easy to use. And I can't say anything about how well it works with windows clients as I've only tried with linux clients, but it should be supported. The performance is actually measurably better for me (probably because it needs less context-switching or sth), and it doesn't come with the limitation of only being able to use one device at the same time (vs the trial license of virtualhere).

Does it also support displays connected through USB ? Or elaborate USB hubs (with ethernet, display and different usb types). The USB hub all outputs it through a single USB-C so from a hardware side it shouldn't be a problem but I can imagine the bandwidth sky rockets.

I've used USB over network before. This is only good for low-speed devices like printers, scanners, security dongles, cameras etc. Running something like a USB 3.0 flash drive over network isn't going to be fast due to additional overhead of the protocol (and the software). For those, you're better off just making a Samba share. Also, the software you're suggesting to use is trialware/payware. Can be easily patched though if you're short on funds. Linux has a USB/IP stack built into kernel and there are free solutions available which can work with it (none are as user friendly though).

And here I am you indeed have the solution to my problem witch I think is common to most music content creators out there. imagine you have a mac m1 with USB c and you have a USB keyboard to connect to ableton or what ever. and your forced to have a USB c hub connected to the laptop at all times while working with the music keyboard. this clever thing that I cannot find it would make any MacBook content creator have the full wireless experience while working. thank you man , but I cannot do it . i rather pay for it.

Using USBIP I was able to connect an OLD Qume QT-31 to a Linux box via help from your video. I have always wanted to do this, but never got 'around' to it, but once I saw your video I decided to try again. Had to play with it a bit, but it works fine. Also using a ZERO 2 W and it works fine with USB HAT (which I didn't need) but looked cool so I thought why not. So for less than 30 bux I have a wyse (like) serial terminal hooked up to my Linux box over WiFi via the Zero 2. Cool!

Works perfectly, initially got it for typing when I am on the bed as I sometimes get too fatigued to be on the chair and my keyboard cannot reach my bed. I did test it out with a controller and a mouse, I got too much latency on those devices(13+ms for Mouse and 7-10ms on controller) so I definitely will not be using it for gaming, latency gets worse as you put a lot of quick inputs. (tested mouse with a generic mouse tester on a website and I tested the controller with DS4Windows input readings)

@nathanadhitya
@nathanadhitya 3 жыл бұрын
You technically don't need this low level for USB printers. It's just unnecessary...... A more elegant solution that's more scalable would be to just turn that printer networked, as in, use a software like CUPS as the spooler, then share it as a network printer.
@Shane-Singleton
@Shane-Singleton 3 жыл бұрын
@@nathanadhitya You're not wrong. I'd completely forgotten about CUPS. I set up a cups print server (counts on fingers) about 15 years ago using an old PC I got for free from work and an Apple Color laser printer that I also got for free from a small business. And as luck would have it I found a spare Pi Zero W unopened when I was digging through a desk drawer last night looking for the wall wort for my Train DCC controller. Think I figured out what i'm going to do this weekend if i can carve out a free half hour.

I like your video. I am using the same hardware on three of my sites on my farm irrigation system. I use the hub because I have an Andriuno Device making measurements and an external Wifi antenna because my units are in metal boxes. The raspberry pi is useful because of its low power generation. Low power generation is important for heat generation and because the power wires are 24 volts 20 gauge wire supplying all remote devices ( 2 Amp max ). Perhaps you could do a video on low-power Linux devices which have small form factors and have a better processor than the raspberry pi as it is an ARM 11. Maybe something along the lines of an ARM A6 which was the upgrade to ARM 9. The Pi Zero has a max current capacity of 100 ma which is much less than the Pi 4.

I consider trying it for wired usb headphones. I'm guessing any delay should be negligible (and sound being slightly delayed from video is less noticeable anyway). I'm just thinking of a power pack for this - of course a decent usb battery is the route, but I'm wondering if it's ok to put it just through PiZero or should I figure out some ultra small scale powered hub separate from pi zero?

To take it a step further, I have a wired hub from WAVLINK which works wonders and it combines all kinds of usb (and ethernet) and outputs it through a single USB-C. Would it be possible to make that wireless as well? This means I don't have to switch USB cables when I use my laptop or my PC.
