Where to start? I've got you covered! We chat about the first thing you need to have in hand to be successful in the kitchen - a sharp chefs knife! How to pick one out, how to hold it, how to use it, and I even demo those skills by dicing and slicing a bell pepper.
RECAP:
You DO NOT need to spend a fortune on a chef's knife, however making a good investment will last you for YEARS. My first chef knife is linked below, and I still have it and use 10 years later. It cost me around $100 (which is about the normal price for a good one), but just sharpen what you have at home until buying a better one fits into your budget!
*LINK: amzn.to/2wyk1rW
MAKE SURE YOUR KNIFE IS SHARP! I promise this will make things way easier. I will create and link a video of how to sharpen down the road.
PRACTICE! It's the only way you will become comfortable with the chef's knife. Every time you make dinner, practice your skills on those vegetables or fruit. I promise you will get there!
*note that I am an affiliate of Amazon and if you love the item I suggested and buy it, I make a small percentage. Thank you for supporting my content!

my mom has unfortunately fallen into an ed and forces herself to only eat a bread a day. I am very worried about her, but now she doesn't cook for me nor my little brother anymore either. I hope I will be able to cook for him. Five months later: I actually did get pretty decent at cooking! I struggled quite a bit but now I have my groceries I shop every week and my few meals I prepare. It has settled, fun to me even! Thank you for the loving comments, it does get better. My mother is also doing big steps towards recovery. I wish everyone the best. Thank you.

I am learning to cook for the first time really. It seemed very daunting to me because I grew up in neglect and I never really saw how a lot of things should be done. But I am 30 now and I’m ready and confident to just try and learn things, failures are just learning experiences (Also something great I’ve learned) 🙂 I’m really grateful to find you, this is easy to understand. I like your teaching style. Looking forward to watching your other videos and seeing your new videos as they come in. Thank you for this ❤️

Here is why COOKING is SO IMPORTANT: 1. Health, especially when your doctor gives a strict diet 2. Next time you go to the supermarket you will realise that 95% of the content is unhealthy/fast food 3. Fun cooking 4. Way to socialize with others 5. Part of spending time in a relationship 6. Saving money 7. Longer life if you learn to cook healthy 8. For those who think it's waste of time: audiobooks, treat it as a mindfullness exercise etc. 9. Planning your meals- mo more what should I eat?

I appreciate the bell pepper lesson. It's interesting to gain insight as to how others do things. I personally prefer my method, instead. And yes, the rocking method is very important... never cut straight down! So many things can go wrong. Also, don't cut towards yourself... I almost had a very serious incident with frozen chicken breast and I was rushing to meet a deadline, and the knife jumped through the meat & almost cut into my hand. Rule of thumb: item being cut, *on the board* cut away from your body/hand, and also a part of the knife should be on the cutting board at all times.

If your dicing, you would be surprised how similar each veg is to cut. Mostly cut off ends and split in half. Slice at desired thinness but not all the way through (say an onion) leaving the area you hold onto the onion unsliced. Then take 1 slice parallel to the cutting board about 1/3-1/2 up the vegetable to be cut, remember to again not cut all the way through. Then begin making slices like you would to make slices of whatever is in front of you. But diced whatever will fall off instead of slices. P.S. i havent tried this yet as i am awaiting decent cutlery for Christmas. Working off a roommates hammered blades atm and it isn't safe! Some ingredients that are thin can be simply cut lengthways and then diced (carrots, celery, etc)

I came here to further my knowledge after working in kitchens for years, but apparently that teaches you more than youtube these days :/ the way she’s bending her body around to julienne is also weird. I (barely) manage to cook something to eat for myself, but -being Italian- I'd like to learn the basic skills of proper cooking, so I browsed around and found this video. When you talked about the importance of having a sharp knife, I couldn't help smiling a little: I'm a professional hand-sharpener, as in I actually do that for a living without EVER using grinders / sanders / electring tools , and I couldn't agree more! I'll keep watching this series of videos, and I'll quote you when I'll have to try and explain my customers, usually chefs and professional cooks, that a dull knife not only requires more energy, but it's also dangerous for yourself. :)

Great video! I actually just got hired as a prep cook too with no professional experience!! I like cooking at home, but I need some expert-level reinforcement.

I got so happy when I was able to cut an onion. This is my first time actually cooking so I was extremely impressed. Now I have an odd obsession with cooking lol

Just discovered this channel and enjoyed watching a few of your videos, then noticed you haven't published in a year . I hope you decide to pick it back up again. I'm a new-ish at-home cook trying to learn the basics, then hoping to take off from there. I love your presentation style and personality. I've subscribed to the channel so fingers crossed I get a notification soon! Take care :)
