Let's cook some dried beans in a Dash Mini Rice Cooker.
These small appliances only use 200 watts and are great for cooking in small spaces. They are great for RV cooking, van cooking, car cooking, dorm cooking, hotel room cooking, office cooking, etc. They are small, portable, and light weight so they are easy to travel with. They are also excellent prepping gear. Since they only use 200 watts and cook very fast, they can be easily run off of a generator or solar power station.

I’ve slid the lid over so that it’s not sitting square on the pot and that helped prevent foaming over. One more thing, I always put my Dash Mini Rice Cooker on a dish cloth so if and when it boils over it’s contained, it’s quick and easy to rinse out and the “mess” on the side of the cooker wipes off real easy.

I tried this in my mini rice cooker. It turned out great! First I did run it out of water, but since it is a rice cooker it turned off once the water was gone (and without burning and sticking). I added more water and finished it up and it turned out very nicely. Thanks for the idea. Much better for me, as I make such a small amount it is hardly worth cooking on a pot in the stove.

Something people tend to forget is why our grandparents did things how they did. Using a wood spoon wasnt just cause that's what they had or were used to, it was a multipurpose use. They literally stop a pot from boiling over... Also, may be a wives tale but also told that the gas is released in spoon, IDK but I know it saves me a lot of clean up on my stove as I'm prone to accidents. Set it on top of my pot and a tilted lid and works every time and keeps in essential steam.

Put beans in the pot last night, drained and rinsed this morning and added the spices I wanted and cooked. Took about an hour and it didn’t shut off so I didn’t have to keep pushing cook. They are delicious. I did have to add more water but that was all I had to do. Love this idea. Going to make some cornbread to go with the beans next time. 👍🏻

I have a small 1 1/2 quart crock pot. I got it for $8 at walmart. I cook my beans with lots of liquid but then take out 1/4, mash them into a paste then put back in. It makes the best thick soupy beans. I like mine very soft and cooked with salt pork

Great idea, I will try this in mine! If you add a little oil to the water that should help with the foaming up.

I’m very impressed! The beans look very soft and cooked through! I have IBS so I also need to be careful to soak and cook dried beans thoroughly. I’m about to buy a mini rice cooker to prepare hot meals whilst travelling for a few months. I cannot afford to buy takeaways or restaurant food every night and I really need at least one hot meal a day. I can only last a limited time on noodles and cup-a-soups 😂

Hello there. By now you had your journey but since I travel often and did a stint of life in a quarantine hotel I wanted to share some ideas. Leafside has IBS friendly meals where all you will need is a hot water kettle. I have found a hot water kettle every place on the planet including most trains. I have a travel hot water kettle, food heater but actually sold it (silicone fr/ Amazon). I now travel with a bowl and a cutting board. I also just ask to borrow a cutting knife, done. At least how I travel a multi-volt would be needed as limited places have the 110v the US has and plug adaptors are common, voltage converters not so much, you'd need your own. Anyway there are also yam, bean, sesame drink powders that are sold in Asian grocers in a variety of flavors. I keep them on hand in the US for power outages, brown outs where we have minimal services. I am considering an electric lunch box which I could also plug into my car or use when travelling. Wish I had seen this in case we crossed paths in Hong Kong.

Yes. Always succinct and clear step-by-step directions. I love this rice cooker. Use it often for cooking frz veggies, noodles, soups, etc. I always put a dab of butter so if it runs dry, they don’t stick. But since it turns to warm, it’s an easy way to not have to Watch every minute. Plus the wooden spoon trick is very effective on not boiling over. Perfect size for one or two servings. All your review demos ate amazing. Particularly when you started with power bank camp cooking. And why I watch your channel. I cook primarily with all Dash appliances as due to extremely low wattage, I can run several at once and not trip my circuit breakers. Thanks, so much help It’s a great extra cooker to have. Now I want split pea soup!

In an emergency situation if you didn’t have electricity or fuel to cook with a lot can be done with these dash mini appliances. I add various seasonings to my beans while they are cooking but not salt because the salt will prevent them from getting soft. After they are done, I add salt but don't drain them. I let them sit in the salty water, preferably overnight (or longer) in the frig. This allows the beans to absorb the salt. Then I scoop out what I need or drain the whole batch in a strainer. If I'm mashing the beans, I use some of the liquid for that. I haven't tried cooking beans in the Mini Rice Cooker. Just researching appliances that would allow me to make very small batches for one person. Someone on Amazon used two big binder clips to hold the lid tight, with a round cake pan underneath just in case. She said this worked to prevent boil-over.

If you put the lid on at an angle so the pressure is reduced the boil will slow down and the steam will collect on the cooler lid and roll back into the pot as water.

I think a crock pot is better suited to cook beans. A small crock pot runs about 10 bucks at Walmart or target and probably should be part of any counter cooking arsenal. I have ribs in my small crock pot right now and they smell fantastic. 😋
@CounterCooking

Yes, crock pots are good for cooking beans. However, I have found that they take much longer to cook beans since they are designed for slower cooking. The point of this video is that the Dash Mini Rice Cooker is capable of cooking dried beans.

Very wise NOT adding Salt to your Pintos before or during cooking.... Reason being is a little bit of Science .....Salt added too early in the cooking process CAN & Usually DOES Result in the Pintos doing what's usually termed as TIGHTEN UP , which is terminology for the Pinto resisting SOFTENING up during cooking process & either the pintos won't or Don't soften much or even at all during Normal cooking time if Salt is added too Early in the process ...Salt should only be introduced AFTER the Pintos have Started to Soften up , Also those who like to add Chunk Bacon , Pork Belly , or Smoked Pig Knuckles should NOT Add Them until LATE in the cooking process when the pintos are starting to soften or " open up " & start to make gravy as it were so the pork flavor will actually soak Into the Pintos , Coz Pork is Loaded with Salt & will cause an undesired tightening up preventing what you are trying to do ... So By all means after the Beans start to " Break " add Salt or Pork products by all means .... CASE IN POINT ....YEARS ( DECADES ) BACK , when I was young , my mother had carefully washed , warmed , rinsed Several times a BIG POT of PINTOS ..... & had let them sit overnight soaking before her final rinse & putting them On To Cook .....She had just brought them to a Slow Boil when a visiting relative eased into the kitchen to snoop around , sampled her freshly started freshly heated No Seasonings added YET PINTO BEANS , & YES , after her sampling them She Vigorously added a liberal amount of Salt without asking saying " it was Tasteless & was BEGGING for SALT ....NEEDLESS to say Mom , who was a Church Lady Almost Lost Her Religion that day over that pot of Pintos & went off on that AUNT about how she just RUINED a HUGE Pot of Her Pintos , & How didn't my AUNT Ever wonder WHY her pintos were ALWAYS so Hard , & then had to cook them for soooo many hour to get them to finally soften up ????? She told her its coz you add Salt Way Too Early you KNOTHEAD .... And I Must say , I tried some when they should've been ready at dinnertime but they were tasteless Hard as a Rock beans you did NOT want to even try to eat yet ......After many hours of simmering , then adding some pig smoked Neckbone & a little more simmering we finally ate them the next day .....They weren't as good as they usually were but they were edible finally ... By the way , my Mother ( not so quietly or calmly ) informed that Sister - in - law of hers ( my Aunt )if she ever took her No Cooking Behind in Mom's kitchen ever again & adjusted ANYTHING Mom would go aboard her head with her # 12 Iron Frying Pan , & She completely meant it ...lol TRUE STORY ...My Dad was sooooo mad over her messing his Pinto Dinner up He Didn't speak to her for awhile , you see , with him Pintos are Equal to Steak , guess you could say he really loved Pinto Peans ...I've seen him , with frozen steaks in freezer rather have 3 to 4 bowls of Pintos with fresh cut onions , tomatoes & cornbread & make that his whole dinner & preferred it ........ So YEAH , ADD NO SALT before pintos start to soften up....👍👍👍😁😁🤗🤗👋👋

There's a whole science behind adding salt. For the creamiest beans you should brine them overnight and very salty water and or baking soda, and then dump and rinse before you cook. The salt interacts with the calcium and magnesium in the skin and opens them up to better let the beans absorb water and cook. The only thing I've heard about preventing them from cooking is having acid too early, like citrus juice or vinegar too early in the cooking process.

I hope you soaked them in the refrigerator over night. It's okay to soak for an hour or so, but not overnight on the counter top. The reason is that beans are a protein and proteins grow foodborn bacteria. And cooking while kill the bacteria, but the metabolic byproducts of bacteria are also not good for you.

A rice cooker stays on cook until the liquid inside of it evaporates. When the liquid evaporates then the temperature rises above the boiling point and the appliance clicks off from cook to warm.

A rice cooker goes to warm when its temperature increases above the temperature of boiling water. that’s how it knows when the rice is done and that’s how it doesn’t burn food. so make sure there is enough liquid in it.

The book that came with it shows several things it can cook , not just rice. It is really just a heating unit with an inner pan to cook in, that shuts off when it reaches a certain temperature (which happens when there is no more water left in the pot).

All the rice cooker is designed to do, is boil water, and if the temperature of the container goes over 212° f, it's designed to click to warm. Even cooking rice, if you don't rinse it, it will boil and bubble like this.
