Loved this video! another idea that I have used for raising your pans up off the surface of the wood stove is cast iron trivets/grates from the tops of an old gas stove someone has thrown out. Can be found for free at landfills and recycle centers.

Melissa, I greatly appreciate this video. I am new to using a wood stove and have started cooking a few things on it. This morning I made French toast! I have not attempted baking on it yet. It is good to know that if I bake on a wood stove, then I should place a spacer, like canning rings, between the stove and the baking dish. You’ve probably saved me from some burnt bottoms! Thank you 😊

Loved the baking technique & hand pie. I have a cast iron trivet that fits inside the Dutch oven. I use the trivet when baking chicken in the dutch oven. It keeps the chicken raised up from the drippings. It would work great instead of the canning rings. Thank you for demonstrating another use for the trivet.

I’m native in northwest BC. I grow up on this type off cooking, there wasn’t any electricity on Rez yet,till 1977. To warm up the house faster in winters, my mom would put a big pot off water on the stove , which later would be used for either cooking,or dishes, or the bathtub.

Back in 1983 we lost power for 3 days because of an ice storm . We had a wood stove at that time and my wife cooked all our meals on that stove. Our house was all electric, but we made it just fine because of the wood stove . Good video on what can be done during an emergency or at anytime with a wood stove .

This fire pit is one of a few covered pits that is on the list kzfaq.infoUgkxAU9pOCSV9Y5JprooHvfxTpOrt4hx8uRM of approved products for Disney Fort Wilderness. The product served its purpose well and provided excellent fires throughout the evening. We were able to open the door and do s'mores, but I had to be careful because the handle was a bit hot on occasions. Additionally, I wish they had replaced some of the standard nuts with lock nuts in some places. We lost the door handle after just a couple of days of usage. Not a deal breaker, just a recommendation. I still give it 5 stars.

Thank you for the video. I never thought of using a cast iron pan I make biscuits in the same way, sort of. I put a cast iron trivet on the stove top then but a glass pie pan filled with biscuits. I then put a stainless bowl over it and it seals on top of the stove making a really good oven. I leave it for 20 minutes and it makes the best biscuits I have ever made. I do the same process to heat up left overs. I cook soups on the wood stove as well. I bring the pot to a boil then transfer it to the wood stove to finish Works great You gave me a great idea to test how hot the stove is. I just sprinkle water on the stove and if it sizzles I am good to go. Thank you again for the great informative video.

God bless you. IVE LEARNED ALOT WATCHING JUST 11 VIDEOS , I can't wait to watch alot more of your content . God bless you Mrs Josette - Montgomery County , Texas

am experimenting with using my wood stove for baking. My wood stove is similar to the one in the video. Today I baked salad croutons and am currently baing my second batch of banana bread. For the salad croutons I used a cast iron frying pan and a lid with a flange on top, like a camp Dutch Oven. I shoved hot coals to the side and put the Dutch oven on top of three canner rings, and used a big spoon to shovel some hot coals on top of the Dutch Oven, held in place by the flanged lid. That worked fine. The banana bread batter was spooned into small bread baking tins, with the tins placed on top of salad rings in the Dutch oven. A few hot coals were placed under the Dutch oven, with the Dutch oven going in the wood stove itself. Then a few hot coals were spooned on top of the Dutch Oven, again held in place by the flanged lid. That worked quite well at baking, although I stopped to check on how it was doing several times over the hour baking time. The second batch of banana bread is baking now--- same method as before.

We make garlic bread out of French bread too. I cut mine in half length wise. Melt butter, and a spoon of basil pesto, feta cheese, herbs, and a pinch of salt. Rub mixture on bread then toast in the oven. It does not last long in our house.

The cast iron pot would be radiating quite a lot of heat, presumably making it difficult to get a good oven temperature for baking. You really need something that doesn't conduct heat well to form your oven, or perhaps insulate your cast iron pot to minimize heat loss. I'm guessing that some wall insulation formed around the cast iron pot might do wonders to reduce heat loss and increase the oven temperature. I'll have to give that a try and see how it works. At present I am heating water in a pot of perhaps a gallon capacity and reheating pizza. I heat all my water on my wood stove during the heating season, and use my wood stove for cooking when it's practical to do so. My wood stove is much like the one you use in the video.

I absolutely love it that is the exact make and model I've had my eye on for years🔥 Do you have TV? The only place I have to put a wood stove is in my small 'bedroom size' living room. Right where I have the TV bookshelves, etc. I guess I could start over and design around the wood stove but the other problem is the thermostat for the furnace is also in this same room so I would kill the heat for the rest of the house. I think it would heat my small dining room and country kitchen but certainly not the basement, bathroom, or the two bedrooms on the opposite end of the house. My home is 70 years old and has the chimney going up through the living room with a chimney insert for the natural gas furnace in the basement. In the living room there is a round cover on the chimney, indicating at one point in time there was some type of other heat source going on here besides the natural gas that I am stuck with now. The whole house is 2x4 construction taken from the surrounding land of red cedar which has gotten very dry over the past 70 years, which is also a concern. Thanks for the great videos. I was so motivated, I cleaned and organized my kitchen today. Looking forward to the gardening season and I actually purchased a chicken license for $25 from the municipality which will allow me five hens. I will have a true suburban homestead hopefully this year! 😉

Hi Melissa. I've had a hard late fall, and early winter regarding heating my home THIS year. I Live in Massachusetts. First, we had a big rain/windstorm in November. Many of us lost power for 3-5 days. I have 2 My Buddy Propane heaters that worked well that kept my home heated during that time. In January, my oil tank failed, and I couldn't get a replacement installed for two weeks. I used my propane heaters at first, but that is expensive to use all the time, even though I already prepped the propane. So, I used my oven instead, and was blessed with some electric radiant heaters I got from family members to use, during that time. This past week, we had a 2-foot snowstorm. I lost power for a few hours only. My regret: I wished I had a wood stove. I've wanted a wood stove for years, but because of this year, a wood stove is on the TOP of my list (we always wait until the last minute about such, and wish we had things, right). Me, I prepared in other ways in the meantime. Anyway, I know a wood stove will cost more than I want to spend initially, but I don't want to go through what I had to go through, ANOTHER year. So, I'm going to look at, not only getting a wood stove, but getting one that would work great for my house and cooking too. I'm looking to making a wood stove my primary source of heating, but I'm going to keep my oil burning furnace functioning at the same time. I've learned that I should always have a working backup for heat, and cooking, like other things in life! In your video Melissa, I'm looking also at your floor and your walls, to figure out what I'm going to need to do, to have someone install a wood stove here. My floor and walls near where I would benefit having a wood stove will need to be up to code, so to speak, as I know my knowledge and skill alone is not enough to do such a project myself. I'm wondering what it will cost to buy, fix, and install a wood stove completely (I know you can't answer that. I'm just talking out loud about it). A ballpark figure would help though! Thank you, Melissa, for sharing what you have, and explaining it so well !
@MelissaKNorris

We didn't do any to the walls, the floor will need a hearth pad but that's it. When we installed it was 16 years ago so prices are very different now, I would guess around $5,000 including installation
