If you dream nail a grub, you can read its thoughts. If it says anything other than “…home…” then you know it’s an imposter grub

The description for Mimics is that they take the form of defenseless creatures to lure their prey, meaning that they don't have anything to do with actual grubs.

Honestly it could actually be the other way around with grubs evolving to look like mimics. Somewhat like the cheata cub looking like a honeybadger.

@@beastwarsFTW Interesting theory, but it's contradicted by the Hunter's Journal that states "Assumes the shape of a harmless creature to lure prey", meaning it's the Mimic making itself look like the Grub. The fact that they're called Mimics even suggests this.

Interesting theory but remember that many insect lost their wings when it's time to produce it young, so grub father might already lost his wing.

@@averynicewarmbowlofsoup1081 "I'm pretty sure that *no insects* lose wings" I'm pretty sure you said it yourself but they definitely exist. most insect in hollow knight are not real and often a combination of real insect so you can't just assumed the grub life cycle to not shed wing when you can see that grub father definitely adult but we can also see adult winged grub in the achievement, are you assume they're butterfly even though they let their young eat your fresh like spider and wasp ? Simple answer they're their own species that have its own life cycle similar to wasp and wing ant.

@@mrdeafter you're actually the one spreading false info. Ants and termites are a special case because they remove their wings to avoid taking up space in their chamber, not to reproduce. Queen ants and termite royals can found a colony without breaking off their wings. No other insect sheds their wings to begin with, let alone for reproduction.

It could also be that they only stay a grubfly for a certain amount of their life. At some point they might lose their wings and become an 'elder grub' Or however you would call it to reproduce.

I think that elder grubs are like the "queens" of a beehive, in the process of metamorphosis the grubs are "consumed" be the elder grub and transform into gruberflys, while one is selected to become the new elder and help with the next generation,

Well, the metamorphosis was probably intentional and the mimic thing makes sense, but the other stuff might not be intentional.

@@nameless_milk_1624 as someone who is making their own story, no. Closer to 50-60% more likely. What seems to happen is that our brains subconsciously warp how a story is created to make it more cohesive and interconnected. If i had a dime for every time I realized some connection that i had made unintentionally, sometimes years after the fact, i would be absolutely rich.

I had been saving the “grub ending” & avoiding spoilers since I heard it’s surprising. Yesterday I saw a reel use the the grubfather chonked up after eating them, as the thumbnail. A year of avoiding that spoiler while I collect them all.. down the toilet lol.

If you actually think here, the sad part isn't that the grubs were consumed by their grubfather, (because they were not) but that the grubfather is probably going to die when the grubs become grubflies.

don't worry, it turn out the grubfather is just acting as a cocoon for all of those grubs so they can metamorphosize into grubberflys(apparently gruz mothers carry their young in their stomach too, although i'm not sure why it would do that)

Even if at first seeing the grubfather munch all the grubbys i felt traumatized but that soon dissapeared when i did find out i could use him as a pogo.

I cried after collecting all the grubs and deciding to visit the Grubfather near the end of the game. I have never regretted doing collectables in videogames until I saw THAT MOMENT. But this has put my mind at a small amount of ease, thank you for this explanation.

There are 46 grubs, and 4 mimics. A total of 50. All in jars. This all means that the Collector might've even thought the 4 mimics are real as well to complete the 50 mark.

Winged Sentries doesn't sound female, but they sound like 16-18 year olds, and it is showed in the game that young mantises and flukes have wings, unlike the adults. So my theory is that grubberflies are actually teen grubs, and when they grow, they become the grubfathers and start their own colony. Dunno why young bugs work as Sentries, perhaps to pay for college?

@@witherking6651 Maybe, but mantises and flukes are winged indeed and lose their wings by aging, and that's a little bit of proof on my theory that may be enough.

@@nkvdev Perhaps the pale king specially bred them to have wings and patrol the sky, it seems rather unlikely that children would be one of the main defenses, although, they are infected so maybe they were mutated by the infection.

If masks grant bugs higher thought, why doesn't some bugs like the vengefly have higher thought? Their dream nail dialogue show instinct like thoughts, While Wandering husk's dream nail dialogue shows higher thought, although monotone.

Well, they have thoughts, not necessarily higher ones. Also, mantises, bees, and weavers don't have masks but have higher thoughts, that's mainly because they weren't granted a mind by the Pale King.

The mask maker said masks grant bugs and identity witch is equivalent to higher thought. And the mantis and weavers do have masks. Look closer. And as for the bees, the god seeker said the pale king's powers still linger.

@@stuffstuff3455 I dont think vengeflies have masks, i think it's just their face. Also not every bug in Hallownest wears a mask, one of Maskmaker's lines mentions that it can be hard to tell who has a mask and who has a face in Hallownest. And for the pale king's beacon, only newer arrivals to Hallownest were granted a mind, as the mantises, moths, bees, mosskin, and fungal waste inhabitants were already in Hallownest before the Pale King's arrival, yet they each had higher thought and even had their own individual societies

@Vulkun because the pale King is in Hallownest, bugs can choose whether or not to wear a mask. There's a lore tablet where the pale King encourages bugs to take off their masks. But in places beyond hallownest, they have to wear masks to keep their higher thought. And Barloon said the pale King grants higher thought when he came which is before the newer arrivals. The mantises do wear masks. Wear are their mouths? Covered by their masks. The bees have a hive mind. What about mask flies then?

I think that age is a matter for metamorphosis. If you don’t have a Grubfather or Grubmother to help you go through metamorphosis, you become a patriarch or matriarch. Or it may just be that a few are chosen to be a Grubparent at birth, like how some Bulborb Larvae are chosen to be an Emperor or Empress

For years I have carried the mental and emotional weight of believing that after all the hard work to rescue perhaps the most adorable little NPC's in video game history, the Grubfather mercilessly eats them all as a means to survive in this dark, unrelenting, desolate world of the game. It depressed me for a long time. But at long last there is a glimmer of light and hope that tears down that horrid, unforgivable idea. Now I realize there IS a reason for Grubfather's choice, and it is for the good and survival of the Grubs. Thank you. Thank you.

If I remember that there was also a speculation that the grub father was indeed affected by the infections, causing his inability to undergo metamorphosis, and since he doesn’t want the young grubs to go down his path, he ended up swallowing all the grubs and uses his body as a defense from the infections so that all the grubs may grow up safe and healthy unlike him. This theory also makes sense but it really made everything 10x more sad…

One thing I’m still confused about… isn’t there a much darker and.. possibly more plausible explanation to the metamorphosis thing? What if *Grubfather* is the one who becomes a grubberfly, and the grubs are sustenance to allow his transformation?

One problem with that theory: that would quickly lead to the extinction of a species. The adults laying eggs, then eating the grub before metamorphosis implied they wouldn't lay eggs again afterwards. If we look at a real life example, butterflies only lay eggs after they become butterflies, thus allowing a new generation to grow. If your theory is correct, the grubs would most likely be long dead or on the way to dying out.

Like in the flying mantis lore: As it grows, it loses the ability to fly. Passage into adulthood is often celebrated, but as time goes by we realise what we have lost.

Maybe the grubs pick them on on their way back? Like some kind of surprise gift for their father, since they didn't see him for so long and they miss him. And he only gives you stuff per-grub, perhaps he offers more geo for later grubs because those later grubs found more on their way home, not because you've helped him find more of his children. He's giving away everything he has as thanks because having his children home and safe again are worth more than that.

I recently encountered a Mimic for the first time on my semi-blind playthrough of this game and I was not ready for the mental attack that occurred as I freed it from its jar only to be in shock while I defend myself. I remember seeing the jar and going from "don't worry, little guy. I'll get you out" to a very panicked "WHAT?! WHAT?! WHAT?!" to a horrified expression as I thought I just witnessed a grub get murdered and have its body br driven by a hostile entity in the same breath. My sister was in the room with me to provide advice if I asked for it and she got to witness my reaction to it. I could only just sit there with my mouth agape after what I just saw

I honestly just thought he was an old mimic in his disguised form. Unlike Grubs, who age into Grubberflies, the mimics simply just look like older regular grubs. That was how I saw it.

I encountered my first grub mimick yesterday, it was over in the exit near the crystal caves I paused the game, i was shocked. How could they do such a thing to my children, only to find out it's not an actual grub? Brb finna go murk that imposter 🏃🏽‍♂️💨
