COOL JAZZ EXERCISE: lick on II-Vs through the cycle of 5ths (4ths).A bebop type lick that develops facility for improvisation in all keys. Good for all instruments- for ear training and interval knowledge. For pianists it develops left hand techniques in shell voicings and rootless voicings through the cycle. This exercise is best learned by ear, but a score will be available to start with on website. Go to website for lessons in Left hand voicings using the author's book: Jazz Piano: Methods and Songbook for professional playing. www.kenthewitt.com
Credit given to saxophonist Kirk Feather for inventing and passing on this lick for analysis.

Kent. Your videos are a Huge inspiration and help to me. I imagine that the great majority or your viewers are pianists, but not all. I don't play piano at all, but rather strings (guitar, banjo, pedal steel) and the presentations you give relative to theory are HUGELY TRANSFERABLE. I get a ton out of watching these. A lot has to do with your lucid teaching skills and enthusiasm. You playing and musical ideas are brilliant as well, but you are SO GOOD at presenting what's going on under the hood. Even the Altered Dominant Ego has something to share now and then, but you need to let him out into the sunlight a little more often. Thank you so much for taking the time to do these videos! I know a lot of your time goes into these, but they are well appreciated.

Especially right now with no pressure on to prepare for any gigs I find your exercises and insights an inspiration to keep going at the keyboard when there is no reward other than improving. I can definitely use this! I spend a lot of time running 2-5-1's in all keys, but now I'll have a lick to work on with my right hand while doing 2-5's with my left. I've learned a lot from you and from Oliver, over on the New Jazz channel. The stuff I play is starting to sound more like music and less like fumbling for notes! I've spent my life as a drummer, had to put down music in my 30's to raise kids, and now am reinventing myself in my 50's as a pianist. Thanks!

Kent, your videos have always been great and helped me develop as a jazz pianist (I'm classically trained originally, and studied music at university). But this one in particular was really inspiring and motivating, with what you said at the start. Thank you for everything, from the bottom of my heart (I bought your book last year!) I hope, too, to one day escape my current job and career and pursue something more meaningful in teaching (music). Take care. Pete

Glad that you got tis lick from a saxophonist friend, as a saxophonist myself I've tried it and it's so very cool. But, I'm still struggling with right hand fingering on piano, not only that also the shells on my left hand. Also with time I'll be able to catch up as I'm always following your youtube videos. You are doing us non-pianist a great favour because we are told to really improve on our horns we need to learn piano. Thank you so much, Kent.

A day without music just plain sucks. Years ago I got into listening to all the talk radio crap and after awhile I reallized the negative effect it was having on me. A couple years ago I switched back to listening to music instead of talk radio, stopped watching TV as much especially news and listening to more music. My life is so much more enjoyable now. To keep up with what going on in the world I scan and read a number of news sites, pick what I think is worth digging into and make my own mind up on things. I also limit how much time I will spend news and I give myself unlimited time for doing creative things like listening, playing, and studying music and the arts.

Another great video, with theory/scale combos I prefer to scale drills. Packs more info punch for my allotted time. I'm retired, so that's a HUGE consideration!! Keep them coming. (Love your book, BTW, and keep it always within reach of the keyboard.).

I feel the same way about Lennie, very much. The depth and breadth of his musicianship are breathtaking. And when he talks and teaches, the love and feeling just ooze out of him, which just adds to the effect. This quality seems to serve him well at the podium in rehearsals -- there's a decent amount of footage right here on YT.

Yes, he's perhaps the most amazing and extraordinary musician of all time, in so many ways. I put him on the highest pedestal of all artists....and when you read or study his history...you will understand. Please write to me for more info.

Thank you, Mr. Hewitt! Such a great drill. I’ve been working this exercise the last couple days, and it’s really helped a lot. The nice melody line helps to keep it engaging through all the keys (as opposed to scales). Keep up the great work! You’re the man.

I dont know if this is right, but i began breaking the phrase into smaller units say in C minor, like D-F-Eb-B-D, or D-B-C, D-F-Eb, D-F-Eb-D-B-C. I got really excited over this lick. Thank you so much. So "Please Sir can I have some more." I am grateful for any morsel you share with us.
@KentHewittpiano88

Thanks for the request, and of course you can break it down to a simpler lick using chord tones and passing tones. The important thing is to learn to improvise in all 12 keys.

Great exercise. This one is outside my comfort zone but (barely) within my ability. I'm fine in C and F, then I have to start thinking really hard. So i'm start out by playing the 2-b3 in the ii chord, and the b5 in the V chord. Go through all 12 keys. Then start adding one more note at a time.
@KentHewittpiano88
@KentHewittpiano88 3 жыл бұрын
That's a good approach. I realize this is a more advanced exercise...but it might be useful for all levels if you can simplify the melodic line.. Good job!

Thanks again Kent. I was just looking for stuff like this to get my left hand moving using chords instead of playing a baseline (although that's also good practice, like playing two separate melodies, hand independance etc.). But for chords my left hand could do with some practice. Learning to play has been mostly DIY for me. So people like you and some other youtubers have been my guidebook so to speak.
