Nick Favorito at the Exelon Corporation Three Mile Island training center simulator. Favorito of New Cumberland is a licensed senior reactor operator at Exelon Corporation’s Three Mile Island nuclear generating station in Londonderry Township, Dauphin County, Pa. The Unit 2 reactor has been closed since March 28, 1979 when a partial meltdown took place. The Unit 1 reactor is still in operation. (Video by Dan Gleiter/PennLive.com)

Well I mean half the plant isn’t even able to produce power and I’m sure it better now but after 1979 I’m sure it wasn’t the greatest place to work at that time, but I’m not surprised they kept this unit operating, might as well while it’s good

Achim Samir Mihail they said operating costs were too expensive. They asked the state for assistance as other states have helped their nuclear industries, but the heavy lobbying of gas and coal power providers, who claimed this was just a bail out and there was still no safe disposal for nuclear waste, won over the politicians.

Unit 2 did 28th March 1979 due to a stuck pilot pressure relief valve which caused a partial meltdown damaging the reactor. TMI 1 was unaffected and still continues to operate although I think TMI 1 is in the process of being decommissioned.

Chernobyl Unit 4 had its meltdown in 1986. Its last reactor (Unit 3) shut down in 2000. Nuclear power plants are extremely resilient, and much of the time even a severe incident in one reactor won't permanently halt operations in others.

Unit 2 suffered the partial core meltdown in 1979. Unit 1 is still licensed and in operation. There was only a minimal radiation release in 1979 as a result of core damage, so there's no health risk living near, or working at Unit 1.

Academician Legasov was an organic chemist and Deputy Director of the Institute in the USSR that provided research and assistance in the creation of RBMK reactors he knew almost nothing about reactors, although Legasov would consider any unexpected shutdown as a severe incident.

@@42luke93 SCRAM refers to the rapid insertion of all control rods into the reactor to stall the fission reaction, be it automatically or manually by using the SCRAM switch. It's acronym is Safety Control Rod Actuator Mechanism (There is no safety rod axe man except the one taking your points -The examinator or a nuclear industry professional I know). In simple terms (applying for PWR reactors such as TMI) SCRAM releases the rods from their CRDMs (control rod drive mechanism/s) by de-energizing them, allowing the control rods to fall due to gravity into the reactor. Sources / Further detailed descriptions: GE RPS -> nrcoe.inl.gov/publicdocs/SystemStudies/rps-ge-description.pdf BW RPS -> nrcoe.inl.gov/publicdocs/SystemStudies/rps-bw-description.pdf (please excuse any grammar mistakes, I'm natively Spanish)

@@42luke93 When a reactor scrams it is simply being shut down. A scram can be initiated either manually by operators pushing a button or automatically, there are several parameters monitored through out the plant that if they go outside an acceptable value will initiate an auto-scram. Collectively this is known as the reactor protection system (RPS). A scram is accomplished by the insertion of neutron absorbing control rods in to the core next to the fuel rods to stop the nuclear (and heat producing) reaction. The exact reason of why this is called a Scram is lost to history. The prevailing legend is that it stands for Safety Control Rod Ax Man. The story goes that way back in the day of early experimental reactors that a human stood next to the reactor with an ax ready to cut the ropes holding the control rods out of the reactor core. He was therefore known as the Safety Control Rod Ax Man. However this being the real historical reason for the term scram has largely been debunked.

I wouldn't say it's because "half the plant is shut down." Unit 1 and Unit 2 are independent power plants located at the same site (Three Mile Island). Unit 1 is still in operation, and Unit 2 suffered the partial core meltdown in 1979. In all honesty, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." There have surely been upgrades, but the indication is sufficient for all the reactor systems that were built in the 70s. The plant is only licensed to operate into 2034 (although if the energy market has anything to say about it, it could be offline as early as 2019). It will then be decommissioned. There just isn't really a way to justify a control system overhaul that would take the plant offline for a rather long time, given the above situation.
