Please don't tap wood with machine thread, it will strip out. There's a reason wood screws and lags exist, they will hold stronger and don't require all this BS.

Because we all tap threads into wood like that holds extremely well. Those inserts for bolting wood together is just waste of time and money. Ps if you couldn’t tell that’s sarcasm also try and tap metal with your homemade bolt/tap see how well it cuts threads into steel. Spoiler alert it don’t go well.

Dont tap timber, especially for bolt thread pitch. Use a through system for this application. Correct length with the required thread.

Nice idea making holder for bolt to cut it, and instead of cutting off the bolt head you could just round it off with the grinder. OR don’t do any of this, that’s your best bet.

I'm a professional woodworker for 10 years, been working with wood for 20+ at a high level. I don't know why everyone is hating so much on this? I sometimes do this, depends on what you're using it for. Never use this in constructive applications, but for in the shop, adjustable jigs, drawing out measurements, radial, you know, longer use temporary stuff. You can hang your tools this way for all I care, if you happen to have a load of bolts lying around. There's a thing called common sense, you know. Oh no, there's not, that's the reason why I still have a ton of work.

maybe for wood but there's no chance in hell this would work with something like solid steel unless you're using something high grade like a headbolt... you'd dull the "tap" out super quick otherwise e_e

Why? Can't you just drill a smaller hole, squirt some glue in the hole, and screw the bolt into the wood? It won't be load bearing but it'll work to hang lighter things on.

Oh cmon people, he is just showing what a true tap and an improvise one with that modified bolt will look like when done on wood. They are almost the same of of course used on non porous material like acrylics , HDPE, etc etc. I have no taps long before and used that bolt method and it works, but i find myself needing a real tap tool for metal and then junked the bolt method.

Why would you thread wood? If using a bolt with wood drill all the way through and use appropriate washers and nut on the other end. There won't be much if any strength in this method.
