@@dangrimes5078 I've had good performance and low maintenance with Trim MicroSol 690XT (Semi-Synthetic). Hasn't gone rancid even when my machine (home shop) sits for a few months. It's pricey though. Best deal I can find on it is at Zoro.com with a coupon.

I have an issue with how you calculate top-up solution. You are doing it in a roundabout way that makes it easier to make mistake, and this is definitely not the way you want to teach to someone who needs help with such a task. I would advice it to be done as following: 1) Calculate target volumes of water and concentrate separately. We need 55 gallons of mixture at 7% concentration, so we need 55*0.07=3.85 gallons of concentrate and 55*0.93=51.15 gallons of water. (This part can be done once per coolant type change and written down in service log.) 2) Calculate current volumes of water and concentrate in the sump: 44*0.04=1.76 gallons of concentrate and 44*0.96=42.24 gallons of water. 3) Subtract current numbers from target numbers to get volumes of concentrate and water to mix in: 3.85-1.76=2.09 gallons of concentrate and 51.15-42.24=8.91 gallons of water.

It needs 2.09 gallons of coolant added and 8.91 gallons of water If it has 44 gallons at 4% then there are 1.76 gallons of coolant in the tank already. 55 gallons at 7% would be 3.85 gallons of coolant. Therefore 2.09 gallons of coolant are need to bring the quantity of coolant in the tank up to the correct amount. Next, by supplementing with 8.91 gallons of water, the top up solution will raise the quantity of fluid by 11 gallons and to a concentration of 7%.

I use to get electrolysis bronzing on my aluminum part. The problem is much deeper with the machine but i treated the problem by lowering the PH in my coolant that prevented the electrolysis effect with the coolant. Also it helps to use coolant made for non ferrous metals or ferrous metals depending on what youre machining.

Great video Guys! What would have been very helpful is suggestions on for example Venturi mixer, cleaning solution, coolant that you Guys are using and for what type of machining??
@haasautomation
@haasautomation 5 жыл бұрын
Good questions Werner. At the very end of our Tools of Coolant video we list some good search terms to use when you're trying to find these various items, here is a link to that part of the video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/n9qBgrOQr9DNnIE.html The venturi mixer we show in the video is the Zebra Venturi Machinists Mixer. Since we are using Castrol coolants here in our shop we've used their cleaning solution in the few cases we've had to clean out the entire coolant systems on machines. The name is: Castrol "Flexiclean" Heavy Duty Multi-Purpose Alkaline Cleaner. But most of the major coolant manufacturers will have a similar type of cleaner and it's probably best to contact your coolant supplier to start with the cleaner they recommend. The coolant we use here in the factory is Castrol Hysol MB-50. It is a high oil content semi-synthetic water soluble coolant that works quite effectively on steel, aluminum, and cast iron. Hope this helps!

Thank you for the video. Lots of good info here. Any chance there is a plan on a coolant maintenance video for the ST10 with the integrated tank? We just got an ST10Y a short time ago. It seems that everything is hard to get to and not nearly as easy as it is here for the ST30. I may be missing something but would be great to have how Haas expects operators to maintain an integrated tank for the ST10 series. I've looked everywhere and there seems to be little to no info on this subject. Thanks for the great videos!

Trevor Adams, good idea for another coolant video. Just when we figured we'd done every coolant video ever possible. We will add this to the list and maybe with luck some other ST-10 owners will chime in with notes on how they service their coolant.
@UncleBman
@UncleBman 5 жыл бұрын
I dont know of the ST-10 but Mini-Mill has an integral tank and removable panels below the table, is a nightmare to clean. It was a task that no one wanted to do. This unit, the Exair Chip Trapper I cannot say enough good about. It removed 40 gallons in as many seconds. If the coolant is still good use the fill function handling the hose to flush out the trapped chips. Repeat two or three times if needed. The first time I cleaned a very neglected sump half filled with chips it was ugly. I filled two filter bags and still had to hand remove about an inch layer of chips but mine was an extreme case. If you keep routine of draw and refill will keep the sump 99% clear and takes only a few minutes. The bags are less than $20 and not worth the trouble cleaning and a less fill bag draws better flow. Tie off with a cord and hang over the open drum over the weekend to drain off. www.exair.com/index.php/catalogsearch/result/?q=chip+trapper I have no affiliation with this company and am not compensated in any manner.

great video on coolant basics and maintenance. The flow of info from Haas is not matched anywhere else in the industry. My only comment is that the video at 29:19 mentions a "chip strainer" that comes with your new Haas machine. We just took delivery of a new VF-2SS in January 2019 and it did not come with the chip strainer basket and filter cover as shown in the video. According to the HFO Tech that performed the installation, Haas machines are no longer shipping with the chip strainer and must be purchased separately. I did purchase it as the Tech highly recommended. It was only $75.00. I also added some 100 micron filter felt on top of the basket but under the Haas mesh filter (from McMaster.com part # 51625K37 ) that eliminates most of the fines from even getting into the tank. This is for a 10 pack of filters. They aren't cheap but they fit the tray correctly and with a little care each filter can last quite a long time and as you say they do a great job of removing the finest particles and keeping your coolant cleaner.

Good question Nerdly. Thanks for the link Custom ThermoElectric. Here also is the link for the replacement filters for the basket. parts.haascnc.com/haasparts/en/USD/Find-Replacement-Parts/Coolant-Systems/Standard-Coolant/Filters/FILTER%2C-SUPPLEMENTAL-CHIP-TRAY-FILTER-BASKET-X10/p/30-10904 These are more expensive than the McMaster felt filters that Custom mentions in an earlier comment but they are elastic and are made to fit the filter basket. Either style should work just fine to keep the small particles out of the tank and can be made to last if you take a little care as you're brushing the chips off the filter into the chip bin. Thanks!

We test the coolant with refractometer using the running coolant not sitting coolant in the tank. I wonder. In terms of filling we usually just use whatever space is free since most machines we have won't overflow to the floor unless you wayyyyy overfill it. They have pre calculated measuring containers. The hard water is interesting though bc I'm pretty sure we use hard water. This makes me want to clean all of the coolant tanks real bad lmao fuck
@haasautomation
@haasautomation 5 жыл бұрын
gia, thanks for the notes on your process. Pre-calculated containers will definitely make the process quicker and more consistent. The information in the video concerning starting a new batch with harder water and topping up with DI water is based on working with our coolant vendors and our own experience here in the Haas factory, but these are general recommendations. In our own testing and interviews with customers we found there was a wide range of situations where shops were getting good performance with a variety of coolants and water hardness levels. Some coolants are more sensitive to water quality and concentration than others. Bottom line; if your coolant is performing well, tools stay sharp, good part finishes, no rust on your parts or machines, then keep doing what your doing. Don't dump your coolant unless the performance is suffering.

Why would Haas not put a simple coolant calculator in the software? Dah
@haasautomation
@haasautomation 5 жыл бұрын
That is a good question Brad, we seriously considered adding a coolant concentration calculator to the control. But as we worked on this project and talked with customers about how they used coolant we realized that typically most shops get to a point where their process works reasonably well and they have a consistent refill process based on how their coolant reacts to their shop environment and the materials they are cutting. We realized we wanted to focus on a system that would truly make the entire coolant refill process easier, so we designed the Coolant Refill System which is fully integrated with the control and does significantly streamline keeping your tank filled at the right concentration. Here is the link to the Coolant Refill System: parts.haascnc.com/haasparts/en/USD/Performance-Upgrade/Coolant-Upgrades/Lathe-Coolant/COOLANT-REFILL-OPTION/p/COOLANT%20REFILL%20OPT
