Iv been a Irish tin whistler for like 5 years now :) and don't worry about speed/style your playing the song in because most of the time Irish music was passed down orally and without any notation so everyone has their different styles of playing songs, so don't put yourself down for not playing it at speed or without ornaments 💚keep doing what your doing, I'm glad to see ppl learning this class instrument 🇮🇪

she is just lovely isn't she. and yes you are right and the speed merchants out there i liked her slow version the best often i think the speed is actually ruining the songs :) just my two cents anyhow

THANK. YOU. As a beginner whistle player, I don't WANT the ornaments in there. I need to know what notes to play before I get fancy with it, and I'll add the ornaments that I like when I see fit. Having an example to follow that doesn't muck around with that sort of thing straight away is so helpful!

The slower, articulate, version is beautiful. It has an emotional component missing when the tune is played in a rush. Music, like life, should not be hurried through. It all ends soon enough.

Thank you, Thank you! Nice and slow (ish) for us newbies (or oldbie learner as the case may be). In the famous words of the band master in the movie Brassed Off... " and she calls that wobbly?". That was really nice! As a bagpiper, I often find that too much emphasis is placed on speed and ornaments in tunes and not enough on the feeling , to the detriment of the tune. As my old tutor used to say " You can play a tune without embellishments; it's still a tune, but you cannae do it the other way around"

The great thing about folk music i learnt and especially irish folk music is that you really can make it your own. All the great whistle players and fiddle players add their own personality to the music through a variety of ornamentation. Personally I thought your version was great. Keep playing with it and find an arrangement you like.

If this is your worst playing, the your a true pro! Music is meant to be played in any style any tempo any way you like. Your amazing and i loved listening to you play this song. I know this was years ago but still, dont beat yourself up just because you cant play a song the same way as someone else. Make it yours! Play it the way you can play it, and it will always be perfect!

I am new to the tin whistle, and perhaps I am a musical brute and not knowledgeable about how these songs should be played, but I think you play well and your renditions are pleasing to hear. You also do a good job explaining things in an easy to learn manner and provide helpful tips such as adjusting playback speed and the tabs are extremely helpful. Since you are putting yourself on the net for public viewing, please don't let criticism get to you too much. Take what you can from them and leave the rest behind. I was happy to hear that you started out just like us, perusing youtube tutorials. It gives me hope that one day I can play well. Cheers

Think I am gonna have a bash at this Steph just watched your tutorial, can I say you do a great job breaking tunes down for folks to learn, you most certainly have helped me, I only took the whistle up during lock down to give me something to do, although I have had a whistle for years I didn't really bother with it as I played the Fife in a Irish Flute Band so the Fife always came first. But when the lock down kicked in I thought I would have a go with the whistle and some traditional tunes and now I really like it thanks to yourself and one or two other with these great tutorials, so thank you

Nah you're alright. Nice to hear the notes in the tune, very easy to find very fast fancy versions on you tube of this one so nice to get one that'd low and slow. It's a nicer tune than I thought it was now I've heard the individual notes. And style? Well ask them whether it's wrong for sliabh luachra style, sligo style, donegal style, West Clare, East Clare... North tipperary. It's a maze for sure. Purposefully so nowadays as it is a big lucrative business. So long as you play from the heart and enjoy it, and equally as important you can get a few quid for doing it shtick at it and give it shtick. I am no expert at all in the the music and the fiddle is my main instrument, I gave up the whistle for a bit coz I thought the standards out there too high for me to reach, then I gave up the fiddle to and the whole shebang coz I thought there was no point coz there's so much to learn and what's the point. Got back on it and really couldn't give a damn about thd so called experts and snobs. There's a lot of, let's call it secretion, secreting stuff away, emperors new clothes stuff and people trying to standardise stuff which really shouldn't be standardisd. My point isn't quite clear yet coz I'm processing a load of stuff from my leg work, homework, bar work, etc etc about this stuff. Again, an essay or volumes in the making. As with all traditions, you can dive into them in the belief that there aren't rules and it's all good and fluid and generous stuff but no, as with all traditions just because the rules aren't written doesn't mean they're not there, in greater no than in other things and systems I'm finding. And as with all things. Rules are made to be broken, but the gate keepers will decide who gets to break the rules and how they are broken till the mantra becomes "we have always done it thus way because it is tradition" I suppose a bit like animal farm by George Orwell in a small way. I think it sounds nice and am glad you have posted this as I can learn from it now too. If you are in UK the last weekend of November there is a festival of Irish music in Birmingham. They have group workshops from St if the instruments, and only cost about ten or twenty quid. Also, there are many pub sessions thru the weekend for all musicians, sometimes they level them. As with all things, planning and preparation before the doing of the action. The most worthwhile preparation with music of any sort is listening, that's the study, proper hardcore listening. And the joining in and playing along. The sessions can be frustrating tho coz they are so fast. Also in Birmingham but a way off yet is a whole weekend summer school of the trad music. That is the third weekend in July. It is very good. Its what it me back into playing a few years back, and really I credit it with taking me back to the beginnings of it having been in t h e position you are in now, that overwhelmed self confidence thing... So many beautiful tunes, so many subtleties in the music. I can chat. I'd take me old comment down if I knew where it was. You're doing a good job and enjoying it. Folks don't have to watch if they don't want to. It's bad sport on them if they're just trawling you tube to criticise folks. There's plenty of stuff "in the right style" if that's what they're after and if they keep coming back to see your efforts you'd do NG something right.
