There is something admirable about the Tanguts' way of being able to get away with backstabbing so many of its rivals, yet surviving for so long. You're you're mid-tier, you've just got to do everything to survive.

Twas lucky for them that northern and southern China were divided by two equal powers who were constantly at each other's throat... Until the Mongols came, for they were the exception.

CJ when the Han dynasty fought the Xiongnu they adapted the army to fight like the nomads, eventually the Xiongnu were defeated. Why was the Song dynasty not able to respond properly to the Mongols? I understand that in the song dynasty the focus was not on the army but scholars should certainly have access to documents from the Han and Tang era. Why didn't they use it to better fight the Mongols?

@@vitorpereira9515 Han Dynasty had to import horses from the west, even fighting a Greco-Bactrian kingdom just to have enough mounts, despite owning grass rich northern China. Song Dynasty didn't even have northern China, let alone a direct route to the west. Southern China is very unsuitable for large scale breeding of horses. Also, their main fortifications held until the Mongols brought in counterweight Trebuchets.

The problem is threefold. First, their access to good horse and the fertile northern pastures is blocked off. This time, not just by the porous Xiongnu empire, it's by two well organised states, Khitan Liao and Tangut's Xi Xia. Later on, during the time of the Jurchen Jin dynasty, the Song were further pushed south. The second problem is that Song had become a very rich country and it is actually using a lot of sanctions as hammer against its rivals. If you look at the negotiated terms of the treaty between Liao & XiXia with Song, their access to the market is always a big issue. Lastly, there was a culture war between Song & its northern neighbours and Song banned the wearing of non-Chinese nomad (Hu) clothing. It is not known if it's extended to military gear & clothing, but it is possible.

@@CoolHistoryBros After all what you told me CJ, it's incredible that the Song managed to resist the Mongols for so long. But even so, the Song fought against the Mongols CJ. They resisted more than 40 years and even managed to kill Möngke Khan, which caused a civil war that fragmented the Mongol empire. In my view, Kublai 's conquest of Song dynasty was so costly for the Mongols that the victory was Pyrrhical. What do you think CJ?

The Tanguts were the first and the last enemy Genghis Khan faced in his life and boy what the Mongols did to the Tanguts is only compared to the destruction of Carthage.

One of my favourite Chinese "alien" dynasties. They were really unique with their cultural mix of Chinese, Tibetan and Central Asia elements.

@@changchadchanamdong2668 Sorry but nope. They included renmants from the Sogdians who fled from the Muslim expansion in the West. So as also they absorbed the state of Guiyijun a Chinese state heit from the Tang dynasty heavily influenced by the Budhist culture from Khotan. Besides mantained close commercial and cultural ties with the cities of Central Asia, under Qarakhanid and later Kara Khitai control.

similar to the story of Khwarezmia: after one Khwarezmian governor killed a large Mongol caravan for its wealth, Genghis sent an envoy to demand that the governor to be handed over, but the Khwarezmia's Shah decided to be cocky and kill that envoy, which is a big "You die now" for Genghis.. One of the worst bloodbath in human history happened because a Shah felt the need to piss off the Mongol to compensate his small private part..

Interestingly, The State of Zheng during the second half of the Chunqiu tried to do the exact same thing. They saw themselves as sandwiched between Jin and Chu and always sought to play one off the other. This... didn't really go well. They were seen as weak, vacillating, and their music was even insulted as lacking scruples. They were attacked by Jin and supported by Chu. Later they were attacked by Chu and supported by Jin. They thought if they fought back with all their might, they would be seen as too powerful and a risk to keep around. It was only when they had a real visionary at the helm, Zichan who changed his state's broken policies, reformed the law and society, making Zheng into a cultural force in his time... then he died and it went all downhill from there.

Great video as usual CJ! However, there one thing you said that was a bit outdated: the claim you made that most sources on the Tanguts are from neighbouring states. Especially last 20 or so years this is no longer the case and the Tangutologists you mentioned have now largely gotten a good grip on the Tangut/Minyak language and are now able to read many if not most Tangut language documents, state/judicial records, religious texts etc. So now Tangutologists know a great amount more on the Tanguts' own perspective of their history! Through these developements the knowledge of Tangut Kingdom has grown a great deal in last decades and this ancient state is quite less mysterious than it used to be (fortunately). If you want to learn more, there are some guest lectures at Yale given by Kirill Solonin (one of world's leading Tangutologists) that can be found on a KZfaq channel that I can link in a subcomment if you want... @@Ivan-td7kb I know, I'm all for preservation of languages, in fact as a hong konger (native Chinese user) and someone who studied linguistics, I felt like I dug up a treasure chest when I first read about the script, but I can't help but know that the language probably won't survive even without the political rivalries in the region. The fact is, it's all down to scholars and language nerds like me who would even care to look at it, and even less would learn it.

Hey just leaving comment to say how cool it is to have these videos of Chinese history done by a Chinese person in English! As a monolingual English speaker and history lover, I often only get the Anglo perspective of things. The only thing American kids learn about China in public schooling is its relationship with the United States during the Cold War, which I think does really bad things for how China is viewed in America.

Man do I love this channel. Not only do I learn new things about events, places, and people I didn't know about, I also learn completely new things about stuff I am somewhat familiar with. Always loved history regardless of where the history is from. But in the West it is much more difficult to find good information about Eastern events and when you do it's often filled with minor errors or sometimes just flat out totally wrong information.

Thank you @coolhistorybros for making this video on the mysterious Tangut civilisation. Not much information is available on them though they were very intriguing alongside the Jurchens, Tibetans and Liao Khitans in the period from 600 AD to 1200 AD when the Mongols appeared. Perhaps you could do a video on how the Chinese interacted and wrote about them looking at the archaeology/paintings/historical records and fashion. Next video could be on the Tarim Basin cities and their unusual cultures which were a mix of Chinese, Tibetan, Indian, Sogdian and Uighur cultures.

Just one thing, I would like you to also make videos on social and cultural life of normal folks also. I heard a name "Xi Xia" for a very long time from Chinese tv-series. It could be the one I watched when I was a kid. I just started to watch Chinese tv-series a few months ago once again. It's really nice to know the story of Tangut along the way of ancient china in certain period of time. I think. There's a lot to read and study when it come to Chinese history. Would you be interested to create a new video about Xi Shi - one of 4 beauties of ancient china, in Chunqiu era? I think the story of her I found on Wikipedia, is fictional but base on a little true story at some point. If you have an interesting suggestions to tell about her. I don't know much about Chinese history obviously.

I am a lover of Chinese history. Let me explain what you said to you. "Xi" in Xixia translation means "West". Xia is an ancient country in China and the origin of China today. Because the place where Xixia is located is the place where the Xia Dynasty originated, so the name of their country is "Xia", and because they are in the west of China, they are called Xi xia. "Xi" in "xi shi" also means "West", which means a beautiful woman living in the West.

There are oral stories among the Eastern Tibetan Kham and Amdo nomadic tribes of conquering great lands in China and that Tangut Empire was a Tibetan empire stretched into present proper China and Inner Mongolia. Just that we don’t have tradition of written history. Before Buddhism, we were conquering nation just like Mongolia.

This is the best video. I always wondered why their last name was Li and thought it was a coincidence with the Tang. Since some of them survived Mongol genocide, couldn't someone do a DNA test on them to check links with the Northern Wei? Would be cool to verify. Conn Igulden's novel claims Genghis was murdered by the Tangut princess he married.

Great work, thank you for the video. Tangutologist Ksenia Kepping argues (rather reasonably) that the name of the Tangut state should be translated as "The State of White and High", not "The White and High State".

Thailand's ability to avoid being colonized is a rare example in history of this strategy working, but admittedly it often fails because the vacillation goes a little too far in one direction, or the state starts to fall apart internally (or both).

What is the stupidest thing to do in the 13th century? Mocking the Mongols, obviously. And not just the Minyak, the Shah of Khwarazm and some Kievan Rus' princes also made these stupid mistakes as well. The question is why peoples at the time kept doing this despite the Mongols have proven themselves time and time again that they were capable of bringing the mighty empires down to their knees. Also, I like the fact that the Minyak managed to keep themselves survived this long until a stupid general decided to become one of the stupidest people in the 13th century by mocking the Mongols. He should know better than that.

First half of the 13th century to be more accurate, The two Mamluk Sultanates of Egypt and Delhi killed Mongol envoys in the latter half of the same century and didn't suffer any consequences

Because if you submitted to Mongol, mean you must allow their soldiers station in your realm who in turn will Collect and demand tax from you and you as leaders must visit to their capital and bow to their Khan, of course most of Leaders don't want to do this.

according to Mongolian folk tales. Genghis Khan was killed by the Tangut pricess he captured. she bit Genghis Khan's ball and he was so badly wounded and died days later. in the official history record, Genghis khan fell from his horse and thats causing his death.

Is it respectful for me to suggest my Pictish family tree branches parallel with some Tang and Tangut characters? I’ve made several very interesting comparisons to Allemani and earlier Persians of Manis line etc. Any thoughts would be appreciated. I’m very honored to have relations even if ancestors caused troubles. I live to not apologize for them but in respect to context, I live to do best by them with what we know now. If this parallel theory of the 4 kings of Heaven to the Cathar kings of 6-7th century is correct then I am able to show that lineage in terms of their across the sea roots as well as western Indians whom I would then show crossed from west continents to eastern realms and become Tibetan lineages etc. much Love and respect thank you for your great videos. -Ur Kin

I'm curious about the other "sinoform" scripts. Tangut writing looks Chinese-ish, as does Khitan and Jurchen, but I imagine the text looks like gibberish to a Chinese reader. Could you do an episode covering these other Chinese-like scripts? I think also Chu Nom (old Vietnamese) was another sinoform script. I'd love to learn about these.

I've lived in Taiwan, Mainland China and Japan (which also partially uses Chinese characters) for several years, and I'm relatively fluent in traditional Chinese characters. I've also dabbled a bit in the Tangut script (I so far can only write dates and numbers), and yes, the Tangut script is completely unintelligible to people who read and write Chinese and/or Kanji. I've also written a few Tangut words down for Chinese native speakers (just to.confuse them, for laughs), and their typical response is "WTF kind of writing is that????" and "Holy crap, that looks complicated."

@@nadogi If I remember correctly, Tangut doesn't have any characters with only a few strokes, unlike Chinese. The typical Tangut character starts at about a dozen strokes. Is this correct?

Whereas with Chinese characters, you'll come across 1~3 characters like 一、乙 or 了 right next to some 20+ stroke monstrosities like 臺灣、變體、龜 and 欗, Tangut characters, on the other hand, keep it pretty consistent, with basically all characters having about 8~16 strokes. I can't type Tangut, but the numbers are basically: 1 (6 strokes), 2 (9 strokes), 3 (13 strokes), 4 (11 strokes), 5 (10 strokes), etc. That also, *in my opinion*, makes them look much more elegant than Chinese characters, as a block of Tangut text just has that extra consistency and uniform shape.

If Asa Gambu did’nt mock the mongol envoy. It might seem like Xi Xia would survive through this bloody era, but no. I found out that when Genghis khan had invaded the jurchen Jin dynasty. The Song dynasty decided to make alliances with the mongols and together they toppled the Jin dynasty in no time. But when Genghis died, the new mongol khan decided to invade the song dynasty. Which means Xi Xia would get invaded and toppled too because if the new khan would be brave enough to fight the Song dynasty then he would have the guts to fight Xi Xia too because Xi Xia is weaker compared to the Jin, Liao, and Song dynasties. But even if Xi Xia survives this new invasion then it would not survive later on in Chinese history, because it could be conquered by other mongol tribes, the Ming dynasty, or even the Manchus so they could establish the Qing dynasty. But it could also be toppled by a rebellion if a really crappy and unknowable political figure becomes the new Xi Xia emperor.

Mi-nyak literally means black people in tibeto-Burman languages. MI is for people Nyak means black. Probably meant as a black headed people compared to the the light haired tribes living nearby like the uighars /indo iranian tribes of Central Asia who had blonde, red brown Hairs. Even here in northeast India my tribes call ourselves "khonyak/khonak or khu-nyak) meaning black headed.

Tangut are like xianbei with Qiang/tibetan people. Today Turkic people call Mongolian a mix of Manchu/tangut/sino tibetan. Today Mongolian have tibetan Buddhism
