I think it was cool when I first saw it, but as i grow older I realize the show make Zhuge liang death less embarrassing by saying "a dead Zhuge scare away Sima Yi". When in fact it was Sima Yi who caused the death of Zhuge liang. We tend to forget Zhuge Liang returned to Shu in a casket as his body rot away after losing to Sima Yi. He is one of the most successful tacticians during the era without a doubt. Though making many mistakes, demonizing him isn't good you know. Sima Yi didn't attack the empty city not just cause he thought he would be ambushed by Zhuge Liang, but also because he knew that if he defeated Zhuge Liang right there then the Cao emperor would then take away his military power. Sima Yi's power was directly linked with Zhuge Liang's life at this point.

I know alot of folks who rep for Zhuge Liang but I've always felt Sima Yi's story much cooler. Some historian thrust into the spotlight because you don't have a choice and because you are literally the smartest man in the empire. Yet knows very well he is outclassed completely by his adversary. So he does everything he can to delay the game and wait for his enemy to die of old age. Imagine trying to fight a dude who could literally outthink you while dead, how would you fight him?

It's what he did after the romance of the three kingdom. After starting his coup he promised on the river Luo that he would never hurt the Cao family and the people that sided with them. This was 2000 years ago and such public and grandious promises had a lot of weight because you are literally shouting to the whole world that you are doing that. But after Cao Shuang surrendered Sima Yi killed him and all his brothers and the emperor. Then his son Sima Zhao killed the Wei emperor in the streets. This was another blow to their reputation because despite what you may think before them Han emperors could misteriously or disappear or abdicate, but unless they were tyrants you can't kill them. Sima Zhao killed a "good" emperor in the streets. Then there is his grandson Sima Yan who founded the worst dynasty in chinese history, the Jin dynasty which is reknown for how stupid everyone was. Literally Sima Yan chose his son Sima Zhong who was retarded as successor. So the great grand children of Sima Yi was an idiot who allowed 8 of his siblings to rebek against him and destroy china.

Incidentally, Zhuge Liang's death in 234 AD actually marks the exact middle point of the "Fall of Han and the Three Kingdoms era" -- which is usually considered to begin at 184 AD with the YT rebellion, and end at the fall of Wu at 280 AD. Over 90% of the Romance's narrative is invested with those first 50 years, and the latter 46 years are remarkably unpopular.
@khangnguyenthaiduy9129
@khangnguyenthaiduy9129 3 жыл бұрын
Of course those last years are unpopular. All 3 kingdoms afterwards are corrupted and destined to fail. Shu has a lot of corrupted officer. (The result of Liu Bei's policy. His "kindness" was taken advantage by those corrupted officer) Wu has problem with the heir. (Common problem I guess, Wu prioritizes in their successor so when they choose wrong, nation's fate is doom) Wei's emperor is too young which makes him powerless in a system full of evil officer. (Cao Cao's evil policy to ensured that the empire is his son's include killing all the loyal officers of Han Dynasty and replacing them with evil officers. Unless the emperor is wise enough to conquer those evil officers, they won't survive in such environment) And what's funnier? Jin dynasty of Sima Yi has all 3 problems 🤣🤣 Basically, the final chapter of Romance of the 3 Kingdoms are just despair after despair.

@@khangnguyenthaiduy9129 Nice perspectives on the third generations 3 kingdoms! I feel like the world would be so much better if China had united under Cao Cao banner. Even the best emperor from Tang praised Cao Cao. Cao Cao not only know looking out for his people, he also attracted talents general's and the brains. He even wanna get ride of corruption completely. Just like the current president Xi is doing lol. Here is a sad twisted for Wu best strategist, Zhou Yu. He resisted Cao Cao invasion instead of surrendering. He could help build a better and more peaceful China. What went wrong? I remembered reading that he received a letter from Cao Cao stating he'll steal his wife for her beauty. The question is, who really send that letter to provoked Zhou Yu before the invasion? As you guys know, Zhou Yu died pretty young from a injured after he went to save a pirate friend. All that could have prevented if Zhou Yu convinced Sun Quan to surrender. His action would save so much lives, end the civil war and make China great again. Anyway, I just wanna share this important info. It's where past government use misinformation to discredit their successor. I love this quote 33:50 kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fc1hhqpymOC9qGw.html "Qin Shi Huang was a target of political propaganda created by the Han Dynasty that succeeded his. It purpose was to discredit the Qin Dynasty and by doing so justify and elevated it own existence. All of our sources for Qing Dynasty history come from the subsequent dynasty, the Han dynasty." RotK, while a decent read, basically amounts to Three Kingdoms fanfiction. It was written during the Ming Dynasty, where a revitalization of Han Dynasty ideas and concepts was happening. As such, it is hardly surprising that RotK glorifies all of the "Shu-Han" characters as heroes while denigrating those of Wu and especially Wei. Cao Cao most notably gets an extremely bad rap as he is portrayed as being a devious scheming coward that the author begrudgingly notes was competent and had good retainers. In actuality, the Sanguozhi notes Cao Cao as being "the Great Progenitor" who cared for the common people and was primarily interested in restoring order, while having a ruthless realpolitik streak to him. Liu Bei, far from being portrayed as the hero who fought against overwhelming odds and disastrous fate, is instead ascribed a behavior similar to that of Lu Bu: a brave man with grand ambitions, but was personally a bit of an idiot. And please don't get me started on the historical porn that is RotK's portray of Zhuge Liang. Zhuge Liang is associated with more fictitious stories than anyone in the novel. While Zhuge was a smart man, brilliant politician and able general, he is basically treated like an all-knowing God. For instance, his first accomplishment is setting the trap at the Battle of Bowangpo where he traps Xiahou Dun and Yu Jin in a fire. This was actually Liu Bei's idea in the actual history, Zhuge Liang wasn't even with Liu Bei at the time. Zhuge is especially deified during the Battle of Chibi. Many of the credits given to him were either fake (the arrow gathering, making the wind change obviously) or taken from Zhou Yu. Furthermore, Zhuge Liang's southern campaigns against the Nanman are all made up in order to glorify the genius of Zhuge. The only truth known from these battles is that Zhuge captured Meng Huo 7 times and defeated the southern rebellion. While there are many moments during the Northern Campaign that didn't happen, the most famous would be the Empty City strategy. Zhuge Liang was stationed in a city being marched on by Sima Yi's massive forces. Zhuge had little to no troops, so he ordered the gates open and while he himself wait at the top of the gate. Once Sima Yi saw him, he thought it was a trap and retreated. Don't get Zhuge Liang wrong though, as I said he was a brilliant general and politician. However, the novel over glorifies him. www.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/2jv5fp/what_do_we_actually_know_about_lu_bu yeah, i totaly agree with all your standpoints, i have the rotk books. they are great read but it's idd a fictional book. I consider CaoCao the Tru hero who wanted to reform the state and country and make it 'great' again. And yes most stories around Lui Bei are indeed heavy overdone. Lui Bei wasn't a hero. He couldn't do nothing right. His heavy loss where he ended up dying from at Yiling proves that. He had no strategist with him, just blindly attacked the Wu strongpoints and had no real strategy. His 'camping in the forrest' in summer heat proves he was a mediocre statesmen. Also in the book rotk Cao Pi took the empirial throne and forsed the emperor to abdicate, then Xian died. Wich in reality didn't happen, Xian became the Duke of Shanyang and lived a very comfortable life and died 14 years later. -Dante Kenchi And this.. Zhuge Liang was my favorite character when I first saw the show, but as I grow older, I did more reading and research. I'll share my thoughts here. Tell me what yall think. www.quora.com/The-Three-Kingdoms-Period-in-Ancient-China-Why-wasnt-Wei-Yan-listed-as-one-of-the-Five-Tiger-Generals I saw this well-written post regarding why Zhang Liang was being so cruel to Wei Yan because historically, Wei Yan was better than Zhang Liang. The novel, on the other hand, needs to make Wei Yan a scapegoat. To do this, they need a reason to tarnish his reputation and elevate Zhuge Liang by exaggerating his ability. I can confirm the exaggeration of Zhuge Liang by simply looking up the list of fictional events that happen in the novel. Take the empty fort strategy for example, it was originally deployed by Zhao Yun and the author of the novel stole the idea. The three visits never happen but it was the other way around because Zhuge Liang was a nobody that time. I also remember about borrowing arrows with a boat from Cao Cao but it was Sun Quan idea, who discover it by accident while he was on a reconnaissance mission. Wu love their water. Let's get back to Wei Yan on why the novel needs to tarnish his reputation. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Wei Yan never seems to lost a single battle as he campaigns with Zhuge Liang, from quelling the rebellion from the south to campaign against Cao Wei. Zhuge Liang on the other hand, grant Ma Su, an inexperienced bookworm to lead a large army and you probably know how it ends. And guess who send there to save the remaining Ma Su troop? Wei Yan remind me of Han Xin, where he defects from a previous lord that contribute a lot but die horribly. I don't know why, but I feel like Wei Yan death was unjust. The man never lost a battle, yet when the shu send troops to capture him for defying a command secretly order by a dead Zhuge Liang, Wei Yan never resists or kill a single person from shu. On the other hand, the state he serves and contribute his whole life never pardon his family. They just outright kill his whole family. Update: I realize now that the novel exaggerated Zhuge Liang ability. Take a look at the following and you know he's actually an incompetent individual. Take Ma Su for example, Zl assign him to lead a large army and Ma Su lost the battle badly. He suck so hard, he barely kill a single Wei soldier and all because he was being inexperienced. That must took a toll on ZL for making such careless decision. To further show proof that Zhuge Liang was incompetent, his successor Jiang Wei took down Wei Yan double gate defense. He basically letting Dang Ai to enter Shu capital without much resistance. Even in death, Wei Yan help defends Shu. Jiang Wei, on the other hand, makes it easy for the enemy. Traitor? He's not done yet, prior to Shu surrendering, Jiang Wei blunter cause Zhuge Liang only son to be violently killed. Zhuge Liang son was adored in Shu, every time he wore his father robe, he looks like his old man. I bet a lot of rotk fans never heard of ZL son or how he dies right? All they remember is his fictional feats. Update We tend to forget Zhuge Liang returned to Shu in a casket as his body rot away. They had to used rotten fishes to conceal his death. That's a shameful and embarrassing defeat to me. He was so shameless, he plot for Wei Yan death. The general that never lost a single battle. Who also helped captured the barbarian King 7 time in the Southern campaign. ZL choose a dumb successor because he was jealous of Wei Yan. He even plot to killed Wei Yan and his whole family. Google search for Injustices for Wei Yan to read more about his rise and fall.

@@condorX2 You idolize Cao Cao that much? Well I won't deny that Cao Cao is a great military tactician but he is extremely evil. Rotk didn't portrait him well because the time it was written, the Tang dynasty didn't like him, why? Because he is one of the minor reason for China's 500 years dark ages after the Han Dynasty. Cao Cao cares about his citizen not because he is a nice man but because of his ambitions, when he was angry about Lu Bu successfully defeated him, he killed all people in a village in a rage. His political party is full of evil officers. From Sima Yi (The Devil Wolf) to Cheng Yu (One of Cao Cao's first 5 tacticians with the legend of Cannibalism) to Liu Ye (who sold his ancestor, the Han Dynasty to Cao Wei). Because of this policy, Cao Wei's political system is extremely harsh. The officers sees each others as enemies and always hungry for power. They even sees the emperor as a political opponent which creates a brand new political "style" in China for 500 years: Anyone with just a bit of political power would try to take over the dynasty. This "style" brought war to China for nearly 500 years before the Tang dynasty (the Tang dynasty only avoid such disasters by repeating the Han Dynasty's political policy). You see, no matter how great Cao Cao is in military tactics, due to his "achievement", he got bad rep. About Zhuge Liang, yes. Rotk exaggerates his ability by a lot. First, Zhuge Liang is great for politics but not so great for military. Aside from the battle with Cao Cao in Jingzhou, he has no significant military achievement. That's why Rotk relates Zhuge Liang in a lot of war he didn't even participate to show how great he is. One thing I don't like about Rotk is how they portrait Cao Zhen, the final Cao military pillars before Sima Yi took over. Cao Zhen is THE greatest generals of Cao Cao. He is the leader of the Tiger army, a secret military order of Cao Cao, though he doesn't leave much reputation as he is more about fighting the rebellious orders inside Wei rather than participating in battle with Shu and Wu. When Zhuge Liang battles Wei the 2 first times, Cao Zhen ACTIVELY defeated Zhuge Liang within a month while Sima Yi lost completely to Zhuge Liang which forced Sima Yi to only defense until Zhuge Liang's army run out of food (Sima Yi's strategy while definitely works, it is a disgrace in military tactics during the time and takes months or even years for the strategy to work). Also, in real history, Zhuge Liang never tried to kill Wei Yan. The reason why Wei Yan died is because of Yang Yi, his political opponent. You see, under Zhuge Liang, there are 2 officers, Yang Yi and Wei Yan. Those 2 always compete with each other to get more political power. Wei Yan isn't rebellious, he likes to command the army by himself, he doesn't like to take order from others. That's why people think he is rebellious (if he really wants to rebel, he could easily do it as after Zhuge Liang died, all of the Shu army is in his hand and there is no Shu general who is better than him). Yang Yi, his political opponent took full advantage of this, Yang Yi accused Wei Yan to kill his family and gained more political power. (Sun Quan did predict this when Ma Su went to Wu). The fact that Shu lost is absolute. Jiang Wei had already predicted that Wei would launch their attack. But Liu Shan listened to his corrupted officer not preparing for the attack. That's why Shu lost. No matter how good Jiang Wei is, as long as his lord doesn't listen, he'd fail for sure. Zhuge Liang's son is a bit arrogant if you think of it. Zhuge Liang once predicted that his son will fail. P/S: Sorry for English mistakes, I used voice when commenting so there might be lots of word and gramar mistakes.

@@condorX2 "his successor Jiang Wei took down Wei Yan double gate defense. He basically letting Dang Ai to enter Shu capital without much resistance." Technically this wasn't a bad strategy as it resulted in Wei having long supply lines that were easy to attack. The problem was Dang Ai was able to build a route around these defenses and attacked the Shu capital, which surrendered without a fight. Also he attacked the city Zhuge Liang's son was in and killed him.

Zhuge liang didn't trust wei yan bcoz of their disagreements and wei yan had a personality kinda like han xin's, easy to be wary of but actually loyal and extremely capable. But he didn't cause his death. It was mostly because of yang yi; his rival, who hated him. Yang yi not only got him killed but also desecrated his corpse nd had his family killed, none of these had anything to do with zhuge liang. And as for shu losing out first, Liu bei's attack on wu had depleted shu's resources badly nd they could never recover from it, the expeditions were a last ditch attempt at trying to save it coz if they didn't stay on the offensive, they'd just be a sitting duck waiting to get roasted. @@HighPriestFuneral Legend of Jiang Wei (Eiketsuden 5 Mod) is indeed incredible. The story got everything we can ask for. It takes a very deep dive on the relationship of major houses of the Liang & Yung provinces (Today's Ganshu & Shaanxi provinces) How people think in that era but with a humorous and modern bent. How Oriental chivalry works (which is not that alien to the Westerners in reality). Playing with materials spanning from Historical stuff, rumors, Koei & Ravages of Time. It even has the balls to make metaphors on all the factions in across the Taiwan Straight and making all sorts of metaphors (Nanman tribes = Taiwanese Natives, the Yi province factions = Minnan & Hakka / DPP in Taiwan, Shu-Han faction = KMT.... so much more)

The beginning of the rise of Han - Liu Bang wasn't able to win against Xiang Yu in a fight but he won the war by holding his ground until Han Xin comes and take out Xiang Yu. @@CalvinK300 Yeah... The ending of the three kingdoms is basically the three irony stories. Shu-Han begins with the Han losing its power due to the Emperor relying on the corrupted court eunuchs... Liu Bei rose up in order to restore the power to its former glory... Then come Liu Shan who went back to rely on the corrupted court eunuchs and the Han lost all the power. Cao-Wei begins with Cao Cao rise to the top through merit and cunningly taking advantage of the weak Han emperor... And ended with the Sima doing the same to his descendants. Sun-Wu begins with the rise of Wu under the leadership of the strong bonded Sun family... then the family split into rival factions, followed by the succession crisis, and ended with the cruel emperor Sun Hao beaten to submission by the Jin. Imagine what Cao Cao, Liu Bei, and Sun Jian would say if they look down from the above... Liu Bei - "You had one job!" Cao Cao - "I can't believe you fall for that!" Sun Jain - "There's nothing stronger than family!"

Nice break down. What would happen if Wei Yan didn't die? He's kinda like Han Xin to me. Anyway, If you're giving 1 dragon ball wish. Which kingdom do you wish to united China? The kingdom you selected will govern and every other kingdoms will submit willingly. This will end all future wars, spare countless civillians deaths and your favorite heroes will live their full life. Which kingdom and why? Your wish will carry on to the future. This mean your favorite hero children will help prevent the Mongols invasion, Japan invasion (no rape of Nanking or unit 731) etc. No century of humiliation. No 8 alliance that plunder, burn and looting Chinese summer palace of it treasures. No 2 Opium wars where the British poison every Chinese with it addicting drugs and stealing Hong Kong. There won't be CCP or KMT. There won't be World war 2 because your unified China will be the world leader. Your goal will always be lifting poverty, building infrastructures, providing the latest technology such as 6G, artificial sun, rain maker, nothing goes to waste renewable energy, abundance of foods, medicines, housings, educations and achieving peace by creating jobs around the world. Guan Yu & Zhang Fei as uncles! And Liu Shan turned out to be a complete imbecile who loved playing with crickets. Surely, Liu Bei must have groomed him from young? Instead he became the classic ‘Fuerdai’. Liu Bei who harboured imperial ambition surely must have sired more children to ensure his lineage or at least some backup ‘Crown Prince’. Instead, on his deathbed, Liu Bei gave Zhuge Liang the ultimate Hobson’s Choice. Kongming would never usurp the throne and be a traitor for prosperity. A few of his failures were because of his not trusting Wei Yan. He suspected him of being treasonous, even though he recruited a Jiang Wei right from Wei and named his his successor. Omg! I can't agree with more. Wei Yan remind me of Han Xin. Imagine if he didn't die. I think Zhuge liang was jealous of Wei Yan accomplishments. Wei Yan was trusted by Liu bei. Wei Yan serve every campaigns without a single defeat. While Zhuge liang was sitting on his ass the whole time. We tend to forget Zhuge Liang returned to Shu in a casket as his body rot away after losing to Sima Yi. They had to used rotten fishes to conceal his death. To further show proof that Zhuge Liang was incompetent, I made a small list. ZL gave all his troop to an inexperienced bookworm call Ma Su. He end up gettin routed and slaughtered instead of the undefeated and veteran Wei Yan to lead the army. ZL successor Jiang Wei depleted Shu supplies and took down Wei Yan double gate defense. He basically letting Dang Ai to enter Shu capital without much resistance. Even in death, Wei Yan helped defends Shu. That's unyielding loyalty. About them double gates. Wei Yan borrowed the concept of "double gates" from the ancient text I Ching and laid numerous camps along the outskirt and trail exits linking to Hanzhong. His defence mechanism was very effective in driving the enemy out, and his arrangement was adopted by those succeeded him as the defender of Hanzhong. An illustration of Wei Yan from a Qing dynasty edition of Romance of the Three Kingdoms. It shows Wei Yan (far left) trapping Sima Yi and his sons in Shangfang Valley (上方谷) during one of the Northern Expeditions. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wei_Yan#/media/File%3AWei_Yan_traps_Sima_Yi_and_his_sons.jpg Jiang Wei on the other hand makes it easy for the enemy. Traitor? He's not done yet, prior to Shu surrendering, Jiang Wei blunter cause Zhuge Liang only son to be violently killed by Dang AI by men. Zhuge Liang son was adored in Shu, every time he wore his father robe, he looks like his old man. I bet a lot of rotk fans never heard of ZL son or how he dies right? We only remember was his fictional feats. Google search for Injustices for Wei Yan to read more about his rise and fall. www.quora.com/The-Three-Kingdoms-Period-in-Ancient-China-Why-wasnt-Wei-Yan-listed-as-one-of-the-Five-Tiger-Generals

Zhuge Liang's peak is during the Red Cliff Battle when he was 28. That's why he is usually portrait as a young scholar while his older version is usually portrait as "a Prime Minister who has passed his Peak". Sima Yi is the opposite. His peak is 50+ after Cao Zhen died and he became one of the last military pillars of the Wei.

I don’t buy this idea as well. Sima Yi and Zhuge Liang were not pulling punches as can be seen in their numerous battles during this period. It is important to realise that one hero against one villain exists only in movies. After the death of Zhuge Liang, Shu didn’t collapse immediately. Sima Yi would still have to fight all the way to Chengdu and Shu still had many capable officers and generals. In conclusion, Sima Yi wouldn’t be demoted just because Zhuge Liang was dead. On the contrary, Sima Yi was entrusted with military commands culminating in his appointment as co-Regent with Cao Shuang to Emperor Cao Fang.

I have always wondered how it would be like if Zhuge Liang and Lu Xun worked together against Sima Yi. It might have been similar to when Zhuge Liang and Zhou Yu worked together once against Cao Cao.

this is a karma on liu bei. If liu bei has listen to his advisor earlier, then all this things will never happen. Proven that a weak and too much humble cannot be a king.

Oh no, liu bei was never weak and indecisive, in actuality he was a sly scheming crook who has big ambition since early on in his career and quite clever. He tried multiple times building his influence and amassing followers his first several attempt failed, until ultimately he managed to built his kingdom (which he often done by backstabbing countless of his former ally)

The book keeps hyping up Zhuge Liang and looking down on Sima Yi, but look at the scoreboard!

In a DnD campaign, Zhuge Liang has better overall stats than Sima Yi, but Sima Yi has a greater chance to crit on his rolls. 🤣

Being too cautious was Kongming own failure, had him listen to Wei Yan to split their army into two, Shu already could have won the Northern campaign. This Wei Yan is as good as Han Xin and was not put in good use by Zhuge Liang

We simply don't know. We can't say for certain that "Oh this Other idea would have worked great!" Because it didn't happen. We can theorize, but we cannot ever say for certain where the road not taken would have lead to.

@@jinhong91 Well... Southern Liang was pretty good. Emperor Wu of Liang was a bright spot in a very dark age. The Li's of Shu were also pretty excellent at the start by carrying on the flame of the Five Pecks of Rice to create a successful and tolerant theocracy.
