What a fantastic way to balance a system, thank you, this is exactly what I needed! A lot of the people who do balancing tutorials have no idea what they're talking about, Stefan on the other hand manages to concretely explain how to balance a system, mind you while actually doing it, in a minute and thirty five seconds. That's pretty amazing if you ask me! Thanks again!

Thank you for these videos. Quick question. How long do you keep the lower section? With my adjustable position of the gimble handle I can balance the glidecam with the lower section at about any length. Is there a length that's beneficial? Thanks.
@StefanCzech
@StefanCzech 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for you nice comment. The length depends on you demand. Use more weight for a shorter post or less weight and compensate that with a longer post. I like it more compact. When I use the west and arm, I load it up as much as I can. Weight is your friend... for stability

@StefanCzech
@StefanCzech 5 жыл бұрын
You are welcom. To put more weight on it, or lenght the centerpost had nearly the same result. If you carry it only by the hand, keep it light. If you use the west and arm support, make it more heavy.
@KollideMedia
@KollideMedia 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the quick respawns. I will rather keep it light as possible then :) I also wondered why to grab the glidecam with my right hand, when as a right handed person I would feel more comfortable "giving direction/turning the camera". Is it because with your right hand you automaticly have a steadier hand and it´s easier to keep it steady vertically?

LG

If your glidecam/steadicam keeps spinning counterclockwise or clockwise it is because you have a bad bearing. hold the housing that holds the main bearing and wiggle it. wiggle it in both axis directions, one axis might be fine but the other direction you will feel a loose bearing, that explains why your glidecam keeps spinning no matter what adjustment you make
@StefanCzech

Unfortuanly, I think your device had bad bearings. Is this a original Glidecam? Than you can replace that.

Hello Stefan! Thank you for these videos. I have a few questions regarding your recommended drop time of 1,5-2 seconds drop time: I see that several other sources (including the user manual of my Yelangu S60T) recommend 2-3 seconds drop time for these kind of stabilizers, regardless of the specific manifacturer/model. Is your drop time-recommendation only for Glidecam, or does it apply to other stabilizers of this kind as well? Have you experimented with slightly longer drop times as well? I was particularly surprised by your demonstration at 5:43, where the drop time seems to be approximately 1 second. That would be a pretty big difference from 3 seconds. I don't have a lot of practical experience myself, that's why I'm asking. Thank you in advance!
@StefanCzech
@StefanCzech Жыл бұрын
Hi Freddd95, thans for you question. I know, there are a lot of fancy droptimes(DT) out there ;-). A DT of 2-4 sec. is most of the time too tricky for beginners. Noting bad on a 1.5-2 sec. DT. I never use longer than 2 sec. because it becomes to sensitiv. You see a lot of kids on YT, fighting not gliding with the Steadycam. Use the weight and the inertia of that weight to stabilize your camera.

Was mache ich falsch? Liebe Grüße aus Berlin. Christopher
@StefanCzech
@StefanCzech 4 жыл бұрын
LG Stefan

Hello Stefan! I'm very new to using a Glidecam, so I have a question. When starting to balance the stabilizer, should you always start with the center rod as short as possible? Also, how many weights should be on the bottom when you start? I'm trying to understand when to add/subtract weight vs when to lengthen the rod. Thanks!
@StefanCzech
@StefanCzech 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Spenser, It depens on you tast. I like it short and compact. But a shot sled may be to heavy for handheld. And it depends on your sceen. Is a action or a very slow (much harder to shoot) sceen. Try out and learn
@Forkbird
@Forkbird 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Stefan! I'm totally new to the stabilizer solutions. I just bought Flycam Redking. I wanted something affordable with adjustable gimbal position. I balanced it out according to your great tutorial. There is one thing I find strange - it seems the handle position/rotation affects the balance. For instance, when I put the stabilizer on the floor and lift it up with the handle in front of me everything is fine. There is absolutely no tilting to the sides nor to front or back. However, when I put the stabilizer on the floor again, rotate the handle to the side and lift it up, it tilts. The tilting depends on the side the handle is rotated to. Is it the way it should be?
@StefanCzech
@StefanCzech 3 жыл бұрын
Hi forkbird, thanks for you comment. No, it is not ok when the gimbal starts rotating when you lift it up. Sorry to say but I think it is the quality of your "Flycam". Unfortunately it is a cheap copy of the Glidecam. Sometimes it work, and most of the time not. It might be a problem with the bearing of the main axis/centerpost to gimbal. If this is not proper adjust, then exactly your problem will happen. And I dont think you can fix that on your Flycam. On a Glidecam HD4000 /Davin Graham etc. you can fix that. Sorry for that. Stefan

Reach out to Flycam, there is nothing wrong with it that they can't fix. I bought the Devin Graham Glidecam and mine literally did the same exact thing. It floated. Here the Gimbal head just needed recalibrated as it was off center. Just because it's a Flycam doesn't mean it can't stay balanced lol....Contact them and ask if they can recalibrate your head.

Hi Stefan. I have an HD 2000 ,just bought used, (my first ever glidecam ) Im using an Olympus EM1 MkII and sigma 16mm. I cant tell which is better. For balancing , extend base down with less weight or keep base short (closer to handle) with more weight. What is the best aoproach ? Thanks.

Hi kenyontech. Sorry for late reply. You are right. There are two ways to balance it good. Short and (more) heavy, or long and lighter. It’s your choice and how you feel it better for you. In the end, no one will care, how you have done it. The frame must be good. 😊

So, if i use a DSLR, do have have to balance it before hand? As in, I am usually use a Manfrotto 323 with a 200PL on my tripod. If i want to quickly switch to the Glidecam, i was thinking add the 323 quick release plate on the glide cam. I just have to adjust the plate position right? Will this work out?
@StefanCzech

+Yichao Zhang. You always have to balance the final setup. If changing anything, readjust and ready to fly

Yichao Zhang when the camera is at the same place, not. But a small readjustment is normal. Think about changing the focus and the weight shift

I've just purchased a Devin glidecam. I've contacted customer service. They very helpful and replied quickly. So I need to look again at balance and get back to them. But might be worth sharing here my experience so far. I have a d810 with the 14-24 lens and with this setup the centre of gravity on the base plate is about 3 to 4 depending on where base plate fitted under camera. But the plate doesn't lock on the slider until it's at number 5 ... that's my first observation. I found the camera a bit wobbly so tech support suggested lengthening the pole. This I'll try. One good think with the d810 it has a built in levelling system that shows when you're level on both axis. I'm barely scratching the surface with this kit so far. Oh and by the way. It's heavy. So upper body exercise required! I've put four weights each end of the base thing and screwed down. Thanks for good videos btw. I noticed looking at others, some say bend knees you don't..
@TonyHobbs
@TonyHobbs 7 жыл бұрын
The 17-35 2.8 might be better for balancing. I'll try that too :)
@StefanCzech
@StefanCzech 7 жыл бұрын
Tony Hobbs 4 weights is 8 in total? On a DGS? Way to much useless weight carry around. Check the video again. Not more than in my example with the Canon 5DIII: 2 in front and 2 in the back
@TonyHobbs
@TonyHobbs 7 жыл бұрын
I thought two would be enough but it wobbled a lot. So added more. Cheers I'll go back to drawing board. And I'll switch lenses too. Does it matter how long the centre post is on DGS? It has no markings. So no way to put it back to same place second time... Sorry very newbie questions and problems :)
@TonyHobbs
@TonyHobbs 7 жыл бұрын
The base plate only locks in between the markings of 5 and 16. That's my first finding :) so you need a lens body combo that has a centre of gravity between those figures on the base plate or it won't catch the security lock if main lock loosens.
@TonyHobbs
@TonyHobbs 7 жыл бұрын
This may be of interest... Using the D810 with the following lenses 14-24 2.8, 24-70 2.8 and 70-200 4 all give a balance about 3.5 (for round figures) on the base plate. So outside the secondary security catch. When I put the 17-35 2.8 on that gives me 5.5 on the base plate. So this is the lens I'll use as it just catches within the secondary security catch. I've emailed David at tech. I'm curious if a longer plate available. I use the gitzo range and Wembley rig. their sliders are narrower than manfrotto. so not compatible. neither is kirk plates

Nice tutorials! These methods are pretty much familiar to me, but another thing I would like to do with balancing is that when I do the "drop time", the camera must not turn itself around. For example when starting position is lens facing up, and during the droptime the camera turns left, it means the weight balance is off towards left. When doing same thing sideways(lens facing left or right at the starting position) and during the droptime the lens will fall down quicker, then it means the front is heavier. And when camera body is falling quicker, its the other way. This is the method i use for fine-tuning at the end of the balance process. You are more experienced steadycam operator, whats your comment about my method? :)
@StefanCzech
@StefanCzech 7 жыл бұрын
Hi CmV, thanks. I dont care if the camera is turning wile I test the droptime. Its "watse of time" to adjust until the main balance is not in the right spot. Test if your metode works in less than 2 min. If yes, erverything is fine. If not, watch my video again ;-) Cheers
@Siimkristjanpariis
@Siimkristjanpariis 7 жыл бұрын
I can pretty much get it in balance in 2 minutes. But every time i switch from lets say monopod to steadycam i only need to fine tune and thats when i pay attention to camera turning as well. With steadycam I quite often do creative detail shots with vertical circular movement aswell, while keeping the camera pointed on subject. Thats when i think finetuning is necessary, because i dont want camera to turn left/right in the middle of movement. And also when i do steadycam shots that require camera to be slightly pointed up, the camera starts to turn if weight is in front. I only do it if i need to do vertical movements, thats when finetuning affects the most, if its just horisontal movement then its not that important i think. Do you do that much finetuning?
