Coopers Hawk Calling and Causing a Forest Commotion

Intense Bird drama unfolds in the forest edge and we can hear it all, but not see what's going on until the very end. Its all about understanding bird behavior by ear! The call of a Coopers Hawk is really quite unusual and sounds very similar to a Pileated Woodpecker. But the forest birds led by the Blue Jays and Crows know that call and put the whole forest on alert. I stick with it until I find this apex predator.

Fascinating. I know our view is different than yours, but I couldn't believe how you spotted that hawk in that thick cover. What an absolute privilege to see all those dramas play out in such a beautiful setting every day!

When I hear a call, I shut my eyes and listen carefully - it helps locate the source of the sound because when I open my eyes in the direction of the sound- I am usually looking right at whatever is making the noise. Try it, it works!

We have the red tailed, red shouldered and the coopers. I keep my hens in tractors beneath quarter inch wire. Crazy. One day the tractor was maybe 18 feet from the back door. It didn't budge when I opened the door. It was sitting atop the tractor right on the wire looking down studying my girls.

I live in SoCal, San Bernardino, I get to see red tail and Cooper’s hawk all the time and I love it. There’s a small church nearby with a lot of older large trees and a nest that’s been in use by a hawk family for about 6 years now. We do get smaller woodpeckers, like the ladder back, but if I were to driver up into the mountains the variety is greater of course. Then my favorite would be when the great horned owls make an appearance down here, it’s not often, but I live in the foothills, so often enough.

Great video. Thank yiu! Just found your video after spotting a Coopers Hawk in our backyard yesterday. I watched him fly in. It rested for a good 15 minutes. I called my wife on the cell phone, and she came out as well. He was about 30 feet up in a nearby Tree VERY close to us. We then went into our swimming pool which is even closer to him. He watched, and rested perched on that oak tree branch the whole time. That was a whole half hour. We left him undisturbed. Obviously a little concerned about our neighboring birds, rabbits, and squirrels that nest here. Lots of blue Jay's, morning doves, robbins, and sea gulls for him to snack on. Still, everyone has to eat! We felt a little enamored that the Coopers hawk hung out so long. Beautiful raptor! Predators have such a purposeful existence. It was nice to see this one hanging out between meals. ; )

We have a well-fed female Cooper's who visits regularly. One day, 2 of our squirrels spent over an hour with her high in one our neighbor's trees, teasing and provoking her by prancing on the branch where she had perched, creeping ever closer. Their last few minutes of teasing brought them within 5-6 feet of her before she flew off. Other than those 2 idiots, lol, there wasn't a bit of prey in sight, not even to squawk a warning. Our girl has often been spotted swooping down onto and into our neighbor's hedge, chasing the LBBs (Little Brown Birds --- female finches, sparrows, etc.). With Tripod having been absent for many months now, I can only conclude that she or another hawk finally caught him and I'm convinced that I'm seeing mostly a new generation of squirrels now. None seem to have quite the same quirks as the ones who were here when we first arrived.

Great vid... I just had an encounter with a Coopers calling as I was counting up my chickens who had just come into their coop to roost. I thought, for a moment I was missing one ( I wasn't) and opened the door to chick, chick , chick.. and was answered by the call of what to me sounded like a chicken making a weird call, so I walked out toward the sound, and saw a hawk fly out of the top of an evergreen about 100 feet away.. I didn't know what kind it was ,as it was dusk but after hunting, you tube, as you did the forest looking for the cause of the disruption, I did find your video with the exact call I'd heard... Thank you for nicely done work. I am now educated more!

Wow! We get a lot of Cooper's Hawks in my neighborhood I have a really beautiful picture of one that was sitting in my neighbor's front yard and a low pine tree. I live in North Florida. I did not realize that Cooper's Hawks sounded like woodpeckers! And I know that I have heard this noise quite often because I believe we actually have more than one Cooper's hawk in our neighborhood. I do know that the Jays will alarm the forest. Once when I was reading on my porch I kept half listening to the J's making a fuss and finally it wore on my nerves until I walked out the back to find out what it was they were fussing about and there was a gray oak snake making its way down my fence! I know a lot of people love snakes I do not! But I'm also scared to dispose of them! Lol! So instead I fight with water! Grabbed my trusty spray nozzle hose opened it wide and sprayed that snake right out of my yard! Nasty buggers! I'm pretty sure they cleaned out my Wren nest in the front yard...

Last spring, we heard the Bluejays making that same distressed call. The call grabbed my attention right away because it was different than normal, much more like a warning. Then we spotted the Coopers Hawk perched in a tree. The BJ’s we’re trying their best to scare it away but the CH nested and was around all year. We’ll see if we have them again, this year.

Thanks. This video was very informative. I live on Long Island and have been seeing alot of Cooper Hawk activity around my yard over the past couple of years. I have a small dog and had another small dog when these first started appearing or maybe we just finally noticed them. Over the years I have found a torn apart rabbit on my front lawn. That was a horrific site to clean. I often see the Hawk in my backyard bushes looking for birds. We have feeders which attracts many birds and squirrels which attract these hawks. I am extra cautious with my dogs. I usually see the hawks early to mid morning landing in my backyard on my pool deck looking disheveled. I have seen them fly overhead as late as 4 or 5 in the evening. Yesterday morning when I went out to get the paper there was a crow in the tree across the street making all sorts of noise and squirrel fur all over my driveway. No gor or anything but squirrel fur everywhere. Chunks of it. Gross. I knew it was a hawks doing. This morning I woke up and took the dogs outside and went with them. Especially being that the little one was also going out. They did their business and came back in. I then went out front to retrieve the newspaper and was inspecting some of yesterday's squirrel fur a little closer when I heard a bird calling. It was off in the neighbor's backyard up in a tree. I couldn't really focus in on it so I wasn't sure exactly what it was. I made a noise to get it to fly off and it flew off yelling it's call. I was sure by it's wingspan it was the cooper hawk. So I watched this video to udentify the call because I have never actually confirmed what it sounded like. Sure enough that was a cooper hawk. Got to love spring. I guess I better be an alert. I don't want it getting to my dogs but I also don't want them killing my backyard birds and squirrels. Thanks for video. It also helped me to confirm some other bird calls. I will be playing this video for my family so they can identify a hawk in the area.

Glad to be helpful, yes Cooper's Hawks are very stealthy and pretty brazen I had one take a dove right in front of me. They probably flew off with the squirrel and hid after the initial fight leaving the fur behind. The rabbit might have been too heavy for them to carry away without taking it apart. BB

Yeah one landed at my animal sanctuary a few days ago. Every time I see him I go after him with the leaf blower or pressure washer. He's rapidly learned if he sticks around here he's going to get hassled relentlessly. Only say him once today and when I stepped out with the leaf blower he bolted immediately. I do believe he's getting the point and will be gone shortly. It's a big world and there's plenty of places for him to find food, just not in my teeny tiny patch of it. That's sacred ground.

2:14 OH YEAH! There is a predator close by. That sound. I've been off an on with bird watching in my early teens and 20's, and of the pandemic I've made it concrete. And the one thing I know is the distress call. But with blue jays. Food time ca and distress are the same. Like back in TN, all the birds even let their nestling or fresh from nest near me. But when a cat came close, or a copper, or a peregrine, or Rhonda (my pet black vulture. She was injured. That's a whole different story) came walking for me to feed her.

Of course jays and crows get up to their own trouble! I had to stop feeding birds because the hawk pair hunted mercilessly to feed their young. If the hawk is close enough, I turn on the sound of the hawk to see where the hawk is and draw it out. I had hoped the call was the pileated woodpecker because, as you say, they sound sort of similar. But, no, it’s a nest of hawks again!

Yeah, I’d rather enjoy hawks at a distance. I feed the birds/chipmunks/squirrels. Even have the same male cardinal coming all summer with his mate, a chipmunk that comes to be hand fed peanuts. The hawks always try to grab one from the hedge they all go to after I sprinkle the food. Had to chase away a hawk three times this summer. 🥺

It is that time of year for the coopers. The one around here uses my back yard as her personal feeding ground. All winter i have to deal with shredded feathers and bird bits. My yard looks like a crime scene in winter. Beautiful birds but i hate them. And the jays will also make a huge noise to scare away other birds from food. Have you ever known a coopers to try and take a full grown squirrel? I have one black female i have been hand feeding for 2 years. She is pretty special to me.

A juvenile Cooper's hawk started hanging around our back yard this summer. Caused a similar commotion among the birds (we have Steller's Jays instead of Blue Jays, but just as noisy) and squirrels. The first couple of times the hawk visited, it seemed to just watch from its perch on a tree or fence. One day I heard squirrel panic sounds from the back yard. When I looked, the Cooper's hawk was chasing one of the squirrels across the ground, into trees, etc. This went on for 5 or 10 minutes, until the hawk gave up and left. The same thing happened a few more times, but as far as I can tell, the hawk never got one of the squirrels. It looked like it could have caught the squirrel (the hawk was practically on top of the squirrel), so it makes me wonder if it was really looking for a meal, or just practicing hunting skills, or something else. One day when the hawk visited in the morning, I came home that afternoon and saw a bunch of feathers on the ground. I didn't see what happened, but from the look of the feathers, it appears the hawk got one of the band-tailed pigeons.

@@davidbono9359 sorry for the year late reply. At least your back yard was not turned into a horror film set. in the winter was worse. I came back and realized i watched this already, Im looking for info on what a coopers would hang out with a group of Ravens. At first we thought they were chasing. Nope one raven and the hawk were playing then would go sit in the tree next to each other. Im wondering if they are distracting the birds so the hawk can get something they can share? All the birds are not usually scared of the group of 4 ravens.
